Which generation are the best Titleist AP2 irons?

I have not played the 718s, have hit them and they are nice, but have played all the rest and by far for me the 716. There will be a lot of 714 love I am sure but they were my least favorite.

I wish I could give a more thorough answer but I've had the 714s since they came out, I want to hit the newer models but I can't get rid of the 714s. Too solid. Or I'm cheap and dont want to drop a grand to upgrade. Or both. Cant go wrong with these sticks as long as you're comfortable with the shaft

718 is the best so far. 714 didn’t have that leading edge grind. 716 didn’t care for the design in the cavity. 718 has the sole and the looks.

Picked up a demo set of 718 AP2's in March, didn't like the Nippon shafts they came with, pulled my Steelfibers from my 714 AP2's. I would say the performance of the 718's are slightly better than the 714 heads.

I’ve have all of them except for the 714s. I voted for 718s purely based on these things:

 

-thinner top line at address

-easier to flight the ball down with the short irons

-less spin than previous models, shots don’t balloon

-more forgiving on slightly off center hits, not much distance loss at all

-leading edge is better and has better turf interaction

This is an interesting topic. And another example of me being opposite of most. I hated the feel and look of 712 and 714. 716 being best feeling and looking at address up to the 5 iron. Offset in the 3 and 4 is hideous. Haven’t hit 718 enough to say.

Its funny because the general consensus is the 716 were the harshest feeling and most clicky. Even many tour pros skipped on the 716 and went from 714 to 718

I've only hit the 716 and 718 the 718 was definitely the nicer of the two as far as looks are concerned. Feel and sound where very similar for me. Number about the same for the two 7 irons I hit. I opted to get the 716 ap2 as they are available for half the price of the 718 and that's with an extra club. 4-gw as opposed to 4-pw.

I’ve only hit the 710’s and 712’s, I liked both. I don’t think you can really go wrong with any model of AP2.

They are all very similar. I've play the 712, 714 and 716. Only demo'd the 718. My favorite was the 712. Currently own a set of 716s and they feel great contrary to what people here say.

Im going to try a set of 718 with c taper lite shafts. I tried the ap3 which are superb but feel a little on the heavy side as they are 1/2" longer with the s300 amt tour white shafts.

Don't believe the silliness the 716's feel great this is an iron made for the tour it can't feel bad . . I will admit it took me several months to really get use to the sweet spot location . I think people miss hit clubs and then say ohh these feel bad yeah for you because your swing isn't jiving at the moment or your at golf galaxy testing demo sets against your gamers .. Titleist use pga tour staff to test each AP2 release they are not releasing a much different AP2 . 712 the offset in the short irons wasn't pleasing to my eye and I feared hooking them . 714 were great not a single complaint sold them because well I'm a gear lover and got an offer I couldn't refuse. The 716's have shafts in them I don't love ( s300 AMT ) and I still think they are the best irons I've ever played forged feel great turf interaction and forgiving. The 718 look more like the 714 and the original Ap2 and that isn't a bad thing . The 716 look like the Ap2 models in between the others Titleist is just staggering designs. I will get a set of the 718 Ap2 or a set of 716 CB when these 716Ap2 wear out .

feel is subjective but to say an AP2 feels bad is egregious the 716 feels almost as good as any forged club I've played and I've played at least 50'differnt forged sets.

The originals were “clunky” for lack of a better term. The tech just didn’t fit for me. I still have a set here in the garage. The newer versions I consider outstanding. I haven’t hit every iteration of the AP2 but I would say Titleist has made progress with each version.
