Houston golf course recommendations

Techgolfer1

Recommended Posts

I’m in Houston on a business trip and need to make a few tee times tomorrow. What’s the best course to play on a Monday in the area? Staying downtown. It doesn’t matter what direction. Golf club of Houston is closed unfortunately.

Recommendations?

I change too much to list it. Working on that...

Memorial Park is open. They close on Tuesdays. Pretty sure you won't even have to wait 30 minutes if you are a walk-on. They punched a week ago, but I played there Saturday, and the greens were playable. You don't have many options BTW. Houston SUCKS for golf.... from someone that lives in Houston.

Wow that’s not a good sign!

Are wildcat and blackhorse any good?

Wildcat is always in good shape. I prefer the Lakes course over the highlands.

I’ve never played Memorial. People rant and rave over it though.

Who ever said golf in Houston sucks must have limited themselves to a small area. There are tons of courses in the Houston area, and many of them are phenomenal courses. You won’t get the major elevation changes you will get in other parts of the country, but there are more than plenty courses that a Lee beautiful, challenging, and kept in great shape.

How far are you willing to drive to play?

Probably could go up to 30 miles or so. No limit I guess. I hear Champions and Memorial are both pretty good. If wildcat is always in good shape I may just try there.

Just curious, what do you like about the Lakes course? I think there are a couple of good holes, but there are too many goofy and blind shots for my liking. Don’t mind the Highlands.

Lakes course is a horribly designed golf course. Highlands is far better...and even it is not the best of designs. Just my .02

Care to list these “great” courses? Public of course. I have 4 golf courses around me...all private.

High meadow farms.

Wildcat highlands

Golf club of Houston

Memorial.

Tour 18

Cypress wood.

That’s about it for OK courses in Houston. Now apart from memorial, you can’t play jack in Houston before 12 pm for under $75. And in winter they don’t even bother to maintain bunkers and no courses are overseeded. Not one! Yet they charge premium prices. So explain to me again where the “great” golf is in Houston?

I played Cypresswood Tradition today, best public layout in Houston, greens were holowtimed 10 days ago but playable.

Playing BlackHorse North on Wednesday.

Like Wildcat Lakes or Highlands as probably play there next week.

Memorial is nearest to you. I will head to the range there if delivery comes early.

I would have joined you if I was not waiting in for a delivery tomorrow.

Have you played High Meadows Ranch? They aerated almost 2 months ago, so the greens should be perfect. Very nice track.

So we ended up at Memorial today. The greens were bumpy but it was an enjoyable experience. The layout is great and there’s some good scenery out there as well...

I might try and play it one day next week then.

thanks for the heads up.

I just need to find somewhere to play on Wednesday now.

Last time I played there it was the Sunday of the 500 year flood on tax day, I got soaked but it was fun! just needs money spent on it.

I guess it would depend on your definition of “Houston golf”. If you mean Houston proper, yes, great courses are few and far between. Anyone from this area, or that lives in this area, knows that saying “Houston” anything encompasses a far reaching area well outside of the boundaries of the city.

Eagle Pointe in Mont Belvieu. You will be hard pressed to find a nicer course for the price. Conditions are top notch, and a prime time weekend round is right at $60, and that includes range balls. Weekday prime time is around $45. Probably the best value per dollar in 75 miles of public golf.

The Wilderness in Lake Jackson. Another gem off the beaten path. I can’t comment on current conditions, but it has always been phenomenal when I have made the drive. Doesn’t have the elevation changes of Eagle Pointe, but has all the beauty of a south Texas course you would expect.

High meadow ranch - a long drive, interesting layout (3 6 hole loops instead of 2 9s, each with their own style), and while again it’s been quite a while, conditions were typically good to great.

Woodforest - a bit of a hike from the center of the city, but worth it. In my opinion the 2nd best course in the expansive “Houston area”. Challenging layout and always in great shape.

In Houston proper, I think Wildcat takes the cake, and I personally don’t like links style courses. It is challenging, good views, close to downtown, and it is always in great shape (no doubt thanks to the soil beneath the course, which used to be a landfill).

Golf Club of Houston is overrated at best. The premium they get for a round is solely based on people’s desire to play where the pros play. Once the tourney is no longer played there, Escalante will either roll it into their private club rota, sell itnoff or close it, because on its own, it isn’t worth that price and they couldn’t maintain it for what a round is actually worth there.

Woodforest in Magnolia is awesome right now. Worth the drive for sure. Memorial is fine but a public course and so much play you they can't keep it perfect.

Played the weekend out at Woodforest and the greens have been deep verticut (scraped) and need a good 2 to 3 weeks to heal. They still rolled fast, but they bounced all over the place. The rough is brutal right now. Make sure to keep your eyes on where your ball landed or you'll never find it. Also, good luck advancing if very far if you do find it. Fairways are really nice.
