What are your thoughts on Brooks Koepka swing?

Just saw this on instagram.

Brooks seems to stay pretty steep with hardly any depth. He does motorcycle on the way down which seems to be the extent of his shallowing out. There seems to be lots of instructors whom advocate depth. It is something that I struggle with; or so I thought? Thoughts?

Not going to have any depth that’s easy to recover from with that little hip turn.

Someone asked me today what I’d do if I were his swing coach.

I’d have 3D of his good runs of golf and show him how it was different on bad runs...if it is at all.

I’d tell him to win 100,000,000 and 10-15 majors and when his back started to hurt, turn his hips more.

Here’s what Stevie Williams said about Brooks in May 2015:

“ONCE IN A GREAT WHILE, a player comes along who hits a golf ball the way it was meant to be hit. Powerful, piercing, the perfect trajectory. Of the young players out there, one I've seen has that special ball flight: Brooks Koepka. Adam and I were paired with him at the Open Championship last year, and from his first tee shot on, I thought, This kid is special. Obviously he's searching to find the other parts of the puzzle, but I haven't seen a ball flight like that since Tiger, and before that, Johnny Miller.“

I only have admiration.

Me too. When people ask me what swings on tour I like, I say all of them.

When people ask me what swings should they look at to simulate, I say none of them.

Brooks Koepka, Gary Woodland and Tiger Woods have my 3 favorite swings on tour right now. Koepka is just a fun swing to watch pound the ball. Though I don't necessarily like the down c0ck of GW's swing the rest is just so solid. Tiger's iron swing is simply on point and I would argue that the fusion almost helped his swing.

Statistically, short game was his weakest area this week. Shots gained was better off the tee, on approach, and with the putter.

It tough to gain shots in Short Game if you don't miss a lot of greens.

It's interesting to contrast the modern swing as exemplified by Brooks, DJ and others with the classic swing as exemplified by Hogan. Hogan had a flat swing plane, significant wrist hinge, big hip loading and complicated release mechanics. The modern guys have steep planes, bowed wrists, minimal hip turn and a flat release. The classic swing took exquisite timing, whereas the modern swing responds to total power.

Big time speed, steep AoA, low launch and fairly high spin rates.

Things that stand out to me is the lack of pelvic rotation in the backswing with the abundance of pelvic rotation in the downswing.

The lack of pelvic rotation in the backswing means the arms will lift into p4. He compensates for that with a lot of left wrist flexion and left arm pronation.

What's interesting is that he gets so much left wrist flexion and left arm pronation that his left arm is considerably bent, looking like a boomerang, at p5.

With the left arm less inward at p5, that helps create a steeper AoA. But with the pronation of the left arm and the left wrist flexion, he can get a fairly square path and generate a lot of power.

Most golfers without the hand depth cannot get the left wrist flexion and left arm pronation.

Richie,

There's 2 things about his swing that I notice: No early wrist set. And during his release the left wrist bends back on its self quickly after impact, like maybe slap hinge or spiderman.

Am I seeing these things right? And why does he do them?

So is that sort of a matchup, if you don't really get deep with the lead arm you have to bow the wrist? Seems a lot like what Justin Thomas does, other than his AoA is much higher.

great until an injury that is. Modern golf = full out swing, only a matter of time? He's had wrist, who knows what next. I don't think the gym reps are going to prevent the wear and tear.

I'll swing like him if I can have his last 14 months

I laugh when I hear people say modern golf equals full out swing. Go back and watch Johnny Miller, Seve, young Jack, Arnold. Those guys swung "hard" as well.
