Looking for Weekend Day Trip Course

shizblam

Recommended Posts

My wife and I love to take day trips on the weekend to play new courses. We are looking for something within two hours of the Carlisle / Harrisburg PA area. Beautiful scenery (her) and course conditions (me) are the two most important things we are looking for. A nice place to eat before or after the round is also a plus, but we can always grab a bite on the way into or out of town.

Any suggestions for a great day trip?

Bulls rock is really nice. If you’re making a day trip of it then I would also suggest Rocky Gap and Lodestone golf courses. Rocky Gap is a resort in Cumberland, MD (about 2 hours) with a great Jack Nicklaus course, hotel, pretty good food, and lots else to do. Lodestone is a golf course by Deep Creek Lake in MD (about 3 hours) but we’ll worth the drive as it extremely private, being cut out of the woods, with good mountain and lake views. I played there a few weeks ago (I’m 3 hours away too) and thought the conditions were great, especially with all the rain we’ve had. Lodestone doesn’t have much else and I would suggest you eat elsewhere but there are ton of solid options for both food and fun within 15 minutes.

Is Lodestone the old Wisp Resort?

Fredericksburg, VA has a bunch of nice courses, and the town has a bunch of nice shops and places to eat. You could easily make a day out of playing and spending a few hours in old town Fredericksburg from Carisle. It’s still warm there in October, when it’s getting cold in PA.

There’s also a lot of Civil War history in the area, but you might need to do an overnight trip to have time to golf and tour some of that stuff.

Lodestone is Wisps newest course. They also have the original course, now renamed Fantasy Valley, but it’s not on the same level as Lodestone.

Thanks. The last time I played there it only had one course.

I forgot to mention Thousand Acres golf course in Deep Creek as well. It’s only 9 holes but the course is really nice in both the layout and conditions. I played there after 18 at Lodestone, with lunch at Archie’s BBQ after, a few weeks ago and still made it home in one piece. That was a full day and i slept for 9 solid hours after that.

Iron Valley is a pretty cool course. Kind of gimicky but great views of the Lebanon Valley on that first green and terrific value

We played Iron Valley a few weeks ago. It was a lot of fun and in pretty good shape. The wife was standing on the first green taking photos.

It was very slow though - over five hours. Tee’d off before 3 and barely finished before dark. Had a great time all things considered.

Thanks for the suggestions. I played the old Wisp course like 20 years ago. I would like to try the Lodestone course for sure. Thousand Acres might be a nice addition if we get into town and play early. Thanks!

We almost went to Frederick last weekend but ended up having bad weather so we stayed home. We were thinking about playing Musket Ridge. What courses would you suggest in the area?

Frederick has a couple nice courses, Whiskey Creek is a nice course, Worthington Manor has hosted USGA qualifiers, Musket Ridge is supposed to be great but I've never played, Maryland National gets top-notch reviews, Clustered Spires is a solid track, and PB Dye is a love it or hate it deal usually (I love it). It's the best public golf area close to the DC Metro in my opinion.

Would have to say make sure to play Thousand Acres, great 9 holes both in layout and condition, I always make sure to play there when i am in Deep Creek, Terrific fun! Then play 18 at Lodestone and eat at Mountain State or the before referenced Archie's BBQ before you leave. Time it right in the fall and the foliage is phenomenal.

I recommended Fredericksburg. Another hour south in VA. Frederick was covered pretty well above.

In Fredericksburg, Augustine, Gauntlet, and Lee’s Hill are nice. Meadows Farms is a fun course with a bunch of unusual holes, including the longest in the USA. Meadows gets pretty crowded on weekends unless you’re a dew sweeper. Once played a 90 min front nine and 3 hr back on a Saturday afternoon there.

Cannon Ridge is a great course if it’s still open. It closed for about a year, then reopened in late 2016. Not sure if it’s stayed open.

Yeah I think he may have accidentally clicked reply to yours, mine was right below it and I recommended Frederick, both have good courses though.
