Lesson with iteach

Had a lesson with Dan a couple days ago. He had me warm up with a couple shots then filmed a couple. He showed me the good and the bad and gave me a drill to work on. SImple and no super involved technical jargon and not a lot of different things to try to absorb.

He said do this drill then hit a ball, do the drill then hit a ball, do it over and over till you are getting results, then do the drill and hit 2 or 3 balls trying to retain the feel and action from the drill.

If I thought I was really getting it, keep doing the drill, then if I thought I was really getting it, KEEP DOING THE DRILL.

While some may think there was not enough substance to the lesson I think it is just what I need. If I correct the off plane back swing and get extension toward the target on the through swing ( no more chicken wing ) I will be well on my way to a repeatable swing.

Hope to see Dan again over the winter when I head south to visit family.

What is the drill?

Alignment rod in the grip end of the club or hold a second club. Make back swing keeping the rod against front thigh during the takeaway. then trace a line parallel to the target line. Purpose was to keep club head outside the hands more because I pulled it behind me then lifted to the top.

From the top simulate a downswing / follow through and do not let the alignment rod slap me in the side. Purpose was to get extension after impact, eliminate the chicken wing, and keep me from swinging left too quick after impact.

This drill intrigued me. I taped and old fairway shaft to the grip of an old 4 iron. Things of note:

I had to set up with hands much more forward, more shaft lean, and stronger grip.

On the backswing, the shaft was initially 6"off my thigh. Oops. To get the shaft to ride down my thigh, I need a pronounced early wrist set.

I put it away for the evening because Im tired beating up my ribs. I cant get my release right to keep it from slapping my side. I feel like Zach Johnson on steroids with a super hold off finish and Im still hitting my ribs. Hard.

I cant recommend online lessons with Dan enough. Ive only had 2 with the first being a few months ago and the second being a couple of weeks ago. Made some big changes to my backswing in the first lesson and worked on some leg work in the second lesson after cleaning up the backswing. Ive been working really hard on these moves and have gone from mid-high 80s to shooting my first ever even par round and im always mid-high 70's.

Whats best about Dan is he doesnt throw a million things at you. One or 2 things at a time. There's no overhaul. Taking your current swing and make one tweak at a time. Some might think that doesn't sound worth it, but trust me...his track record is proof enough.

My online lesson with Dan was worth 5x what I paid for it. I am close to having the first few changes ingrained and then I am pumped for the next step. I can't wait to post before and after for a testimonial for him

This is such a no brainer for anybody who really wants clear instructions from a master.

I’ve taken some online lessons from Dan and they’re always extremely thorough and well worth the money. Dan puts a ton of effort into them. A fantastic option if you’re not near a good instructor or if you want lessons with one of the best.

Well i’m sold. Hopefully I can videotape next weekend. So Dan is their a website? How does this work?

Pretty informal process... Video yourself down the line and face on. PayPal him the money. He hits you back in a day or two with a video analysis of what you are doing and what he wants you to change first.

He will then shoot a custom video illustrating the drills he thinks will work best to help you get it.

When you are ready for the next one you just repeat the process. He is such a clear communicator that you can't end up worse unless you just can't focus and work on one thing at a time.

Best of luck mate

I'd be very interested. OP was this an online lesson? I can't see myself going all over town trying to find a reputable pro but online I think I need to look into that.

In person lesson. I used air miles to cover the flight.

I did an online lesson and I am playing better than ever now but think I still need to work on drills from the first lesson. How long should I wait between lessons?

I took my first one a month ago and have been working hard on fixing my takeaway. I asked him when the next one would be and he said he doesn’t want to add until I own this move. In the meantime, after asking him can I send an update and should I pay again for that, I’ve been videoing myself and sending him updates which he said is part of the original lesson. Best value in Golf IMO plus my backswing is finally changing and can’t wait to send him an update and get the next piece. Wish I would’ve done this years ago!

I guess I should send him an email but is paypal the only payment option? I don’t have a pp account because I’ve heard nothing but horror stories.

I have used paypal since the late 90's. I have never had an issue with it ever. The only horror story you may here is as a seller, because paypal will side with the buyer nearly everytime in a dispute. As a buyer/payor it is literally zero risk to you. Also you don't need an account with paypal to pay him with it, since he is using a merchant account. You can just click the link and pay him with whatever card you want.

I had an online lesson with Dan last year and can't recommend him enough. The lessons are affordable and he sends an extremely detailed video of what your doing well and what needs to be fixed and why, often comparing to one or two of his students who have similar problem areas. He sends a second video of what drill(s) you need to be working on, all within 48 hours.

I was actually prescribed the same drill as the OP, keep at it and drill it to no end. It really helps create a "steep to shallow" move and helps me rotate though the swing. I went from a post shoulder surgery mess of a swing that was all kinds of steep and swinging way left to a pretty neutral one with the drill. Scores are now lower than before I messed up my swing.

Fastforward a week...Im no longer calling my back swing the back swing, Im calling it the back lift. Thank you so much for sharing this iteach drill.

Ive been doing this drill a ton and Ive discovered that Im getting my arms to far behind me. All I feel like Im doing now is lifting the club over my trail shoulder (like a chopping motion) while I turn my shoulders. Its so obvious now why Montes shoulder isolation drill worked so well for me. Even though Ive thought I was keeping the club in front, I havent been. This drill sealed the deal.

I agree. I did a lesson with him a while back when i was struggling and it was really helpful. It put me back on the path to playing well.
