Public Courses by Top Architects

After playing a good amount of public golf in New York and New Jersey, I realized that some courses were designed by some prominent architects, both historic and modern. Looking for some recommendations of courses within about 2 hours of New York City. These are the ones I've played.

• Tillinghast - Bethpage, Old Orchard, Suneagles
  
• Hurdzan/Fry - Neshanic Valley, Harbor Links, Sand Barrens
  
• Donald Ross - Seaview Bay
  
• William Flynn - AC Country Club, Seaview Pines, Woodcrest Country Club
  
• Robert Trent Jones Sr. - Hominy Hill, Marine Park, Lido Beach, Eisenhower Blue
  
• Gil Hanse - Stonebridge

Gil Hanse designed Tallgrass, which closed last year. He had limited involvement at Stonebridge, if I'm not mistaken.

 

Pieces of Timber Point Blue and Red are from the original Colt & Alison design, including, most notably, the Gibraltar par-3.

 

Bethpage Green and Eisenhower Red remain mostly Devereux Emmet designs.

 

Montauk Downs is Robert Trent Jones with a Rees Jones restoration. Lido is RTJ.

Tom Fazio - Paupack Hills

Donald Ross/Robert White - Buck Hill Falls

Jack Nicklaus (if you consider him) - Great Bear

A.W. Tillinghast - Shawnee (supposedly his first ever design)

 

Probably a few others I'm not currently remembering. I haven't played any recently, so not sure of condition. I hear Paupack Hills isn't in great shape lately though.

There were unconfirmed rumors years ago that Tillinghast was involved with Saxon Woods

i have heard that shawnee or the lynx at river bend in port jervis. either way still historic to me.

not many know this -- but the ACTUAL course by tillinghast at shawnee has long been gone. there are less than a handful of holes that are the same to his original design.

regarding the Tillinghast/Saxon rumors - I believe this to be true. you will notice right out of the gate that the 1st, 3rd, 4th greens are all very similar to his style. with some tree removal and restoration of greens back to original sizes it will feel even more so that way
