Going to Palm Springs in October - Must play...?

Hey guys,

 

I will be going to Palm Springs in October for a work Conference, but I do have 2 afternoons when I can play. Was thinking of trying the PGA West facility with their 5 courses.

 

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can't really go wrong, there are a bunch of good courses. If I had 2 rounds to play I would play both at Indian Wells.

October is transition season in the desert. All of the courses overseed with winter grass some time in October/November. I played there in October 2016 and ended up playing on courses that were still open before overseeding, so they were kinda dry and crusty but still quite playable. Your best bet is with the multi-course resorts like Indian Wells, PGA West, Desert Willow, etc., as they tend to stagger the maintenance shutdowns and keep at least one course open.

 

Here's a site that tracks the maintenance schedules for SoCal courses. They also note cart-path-only restrictions after courses reopen.

Call the courses before hand as they all have their over seeding schedule by now. Work the itinerary around that. I don't think you will have to book many tee times in advance as well which allows you to show up in the desert then start calling to verify your best tracks that aren't in transition.

Pretty much this. Though Classic Club is by far my favorite course in the area. Also echo the overseeing schedule. Just call around and I’m sure you’ll find two courses that will be in decent shape while you’re there.

That is my opinion for sure. PGA West is nice also, and the others mentioned. By IW is my favorite facility. Best courses, great ranges, best food after, no houses to deal with. I just love it there.

I’d say IW and Desert Willow. You can find their overseeding schedules on their website. I go out there every Nov and have to do the same. Usually the places with 2 courses on air will offset the overseeding so one course is always open. I also really enjoy Classic Club but always seems for me they are overseeding when I’m out there. Shadow Ridge is also a great course .

I'd concur with many others here:

Desert Willow (which has 36, I played each once and had a fine time on both)

PGA West and Mountain courses are good also.

 

Definitely check the sites for their maintenance schedules though. Always seems to be some courses closed for a few days around that time.

Since the yearly family trip is planned for socal this year in the middle of oct also....Palm Springs golf courses/la quinta/ and surrounding areas will be a ghost town. I think everyone and there mother close from oct 1- nov 1 or even mid nov. Pga west closes for a long while. The only course that might be open is norman course because they have zero overseed there.

We used to love SilverRock but the back nine renovation ruined it in our opinion and we won't be back.

 

Too bad - hope they like their hotel and conference center.

Classic club and Desert willow (both courses) are excellent. Silverrock is mediocre, at best. The redesign is not good. The first par 3 on the back is basically unplayable. You can't stop the ball on the green. Both Indian Wells courses are okay, just not my style of course (they're resort resort courses).
