Ping experts, stock graphite iron question

quine

Recommended Posts

Low single digit senior player who has moved to lighter weight graphite in irons due to some injuries. Currently playing Accra 80i stiff shafts and they are. Good fit. Looking to order i210 irons in either stock Alta iron shaft or recoil smacwrap shaft. Anyone have any experience with either of these shafts, good or bad ? They are similar in weight so I'm wondering how they differ in flight, feel, dispersion . Thanks in advance

If those are your only choices the Recoils are the ones you want. I have played both Recoil 95's and Accra Tour 100i's. The Recoils don't really feel the same as the as the Accra's but they are a very good graphite iron shaft.

I share the same physical and state of game you described yourself.

Long time Recoil 95 player , that has recently switched to the Recoil es

Smacwrap 780 in my new Cobra Forged Tec Blacks.

Compared to the Recoil 95 , the Smacwraps launch a bit higher , are about

a half club longer , and feel much better. The vibration dampening properties

of the Smacwraps is real , as advertised , great for an older player with

hand issue like myself.

I have hit both in the fit cart, prefer the Recoils. Just feel better to me. Buddy of mine had the CB in his G400s, didn't get along that well. Switched to G700 and I suggested he try the Recoils. He liked them better and placed an order for them.

I've had my i210's with Recoil SmacWraps (F4) for a couple of weeks now and have played about ten rounds plus some range time and am very happy with them.

I'd been playing i200's with Nippon Modus 3's in stiff flex previously and, while I really liked them, I was looking for something to perhaps alleviate some hand and wrist pain that I was experiencing. For reference, I'm 65 but still pretty athletic (not sure that word and 65 years old really belong in the same sentence though!) and am between a 3 and 4 handicap.

I carry my PW 130 - 135, 7 iron 160 - 165 and 5 iron180 - 185 on average.

Overall, I haven't been able to detect much difference in performance between the two shafts - occasionally I think I hit the Recoils a little bit higher but then ten minutes later I don't really think that so it's probably all in my head. Distances seem nearly identical as well or at least whatever the differences might be are minute enough so as to not enter into club selection.

I also find the Recoil's to be equally easy to flight down when necessary and moving the ball left to right and right to left are no problem either. For the most part, though, unless I'm trying to do something specific with them they just go pretty straight and I'm certainly OK with that.

Most importantly to me is that I HAVE noticed a significant difference in how my hands and wrists feel after the two weeks. I guess it could just be some sort of placebo effect at this point but, regardless, I'll take it. I've played more and hit WAY more balls on the range since I've made the switch and the hands actually feel much better than after even a single round or practice session with the Nippon's.

In the shorter irons I've hit what seems to be a few more pulls than I did with the Nippon's and have been wondering if that's due to the slight difference in weight between the the two shafts? Regardless, it's not been enough of an issue to cause me any real concern, just a suspicion based on observation.

My only prior experience with graphite shafts in irons was an experiment with Steelfibers four or five years ago. I thought that they were OK but went back to steel when I bought new irons the following year probably due as much to expense as anything else.

However, as best I can recall anyways, there is a distinct difference in the feel between the Steelfibers and the Recoils and I personally prefer the Recoils.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Seems like the recoil have the edge in preference . I’m leaning that way. On another note, if I were to play the 95 recoil , I use to play the f4 , I think I would drop to f3 but I’m thinking in the lighter weight smacwrap I would stay in the f4 flex. Would you say that in general, the lighter the weight, it plays softer then the heavier counterpart ?

Ok,

I'll throw in a balanced view for the Alta CB. I have these in my i200 heads and find that they are excellent. Very nice feel and absolutely no loss in feel or dispersion etc. I probably have gained a couple of yards but that wasn't a factor in my change. I previously played Nippon 105 but due to a deterioration in my arthritis took the plunge and went for graphite.

Great decision and I love the CB. Strongly recommend that you try before making any decisions.

Regarding swing weight my i210's are standard length, however, when placing the order I requested D1 - D2 and they came in at D1 which is exactly what my i200's with Nippon's were.

Considering that I also ordered "gold" color coded grips which are slightly oversize it shouldn't be difficult to get the swing weight up even a little more with the lighter standard size grips.

I also meant to mention previously that I also demoed the Alta shaft and while I agree that it's a fine shaft I thought that it felt much softer/more flexible than the Recoil and I had a tendency to hit high hooks.

Personally, I thought the iron version of the Alta played nearly identical to the "wood" version (which would only make sense I guess) as I found that the Alta CB shaft in driver, fairways and hybrids produced similar high hooks and that it also just felt softer/ more flexible than comparable flex after market shafts. Deliberately slow and easy swings produced fine results but the second I tried to go after it a little bit it was instant high left.

I might add that I've just never had much luck with counter balanced shafts of any type (including the Ping version of the Xtorsion) so therein might lie the problem.

I would also recommend at least giving them a try for comparison's sake as you might find them to be perfect.
