Putting alignment problems

Ok guys, I'll try and be as descriptive as possible. I draw a line on my ball to use for putting alignment like a lot of us do I suppose. You know the routine: find the spot you want to hit the putt to, aim the line at that spot, align the putter with the line on the ball and then make the stroke. Easy right?

 

My problem is that when I align the line to the spot and then align the putter with the line on the ball, the putter is not lined up where I want the ball to go. If I didn't readjust the putter I would push the putt every time.

 

I even had a buddy look at where I aligned the ball. On a 10 foot putt yesterday I aligned the ball to the left edge of the hole. I asked him to look at the ball and tell me where it was aimed. He said left edge to confirm. I then put my putter behind the ball with the alignment mark straight in line with the ball line. I asked him where the putter was aiming and he said it was aimed to the right. What gives? Fyi, I use a Spider Mini with the original grip and it's straight.

Aiming is something you learn with experience. Perhaps the most difficult thing in golf. No matter how much instruction or advice you get, drawing and lining up T's on a club and ball means very little. There is one spot on that golf ball for you to hit, for it to end up where you want it to go. Every club and putter is different, and zeros out in a different way. I wouldn't even trust the leading edge to be flush with the face necessarily, especially with an insert.

It might need some retraining. I had a slightly different problem but it might help you. I could line up the putter and ball correctly but when I looked at the hole from putting position it just never felt right. I was also a eyes directly above the ball guy but after reading somewhere or watching (can't remember) that you can adjust ever so slightly inside or outside the ball line it will help that feel.

 

After some experimenting I feel the most alligned with my eyes just a hair inside the ball.

using a chalk line is imo the best way to reteach your aim and work on rolling the ball online. I just don't recommend going outside of 5-7 feet as bounces in the green can make the ball go a touch offline and mess with your head a bit.

I agree with jjgott that the Mike Malaska aim test is helpful. I think for practice the alignment pro is great for putting alignment and aim since it helps remove some variables. I put a towel down to stand on since it is recommended to protect the green if you stand in one place for an extended period of time. Furthermore, I putt to a tee or poker chip to place my attention on a smaller target.

The Putting Stick Pro is one of those things that's ridiculously simple, yet just works. It definitely solved this problem for me.

 

If you can't roll the ball straight down the whole stick then you're not aligned, correctly. It teaches you what 'correct' looks like, for your eye, putter, ball position, etc.

Have you checked to make sure the center of gravity is in fact the line thats on that putter. Mine is maybe half inch high. Not trying to imply you have overlooked an obvious. Just trying to help.

i fight this battle all the time and have tried i dont know how many different shapes, lengths, shaft designs and grips for ages and i can put well for a round or 2 then back in the trash it goes. Thinking about trying to get refit with the Edel stuff

Depending on your eye dominance, and how much offset your putter has, it can cause you to mis-align the putter. For me, putter with a lot of offset, I tended to aim them right. I found this out with the use of an aiming laser. Squaring up the putter made it look about 10* closed.

I made a putting aid that I haven't really seen anywhere for next to nothing.

 

I took two coat hangers and bent them up so they look like a "P" except the P is elongated with a slight, concave v in it. I then wrapped some construction string line (important because it stretches and stays tight.) around the wires. I stick the coat hangers in the green one past the hole and one a couple feet behind my ball with the string stretched between them. The string is about 4-5" off the green so it doesn't interfere with the ball or stoke. Now you have a straight line that passes over you ball alignment and putter alignment and you don't have to leave chalk lines on the green.

 

The "V" in the coat hanger are there just to wind the string around when not in use.

 

If you putt with your eyes directly over the ball you cover your ball and putter line with the string. If you prefer to have your eyes inside the ball you just make sure the lines are parallel. It also help to get your eyes in a consistent spot because the string is above the ball some any sway forward or backwards will change the distance between the string line and you ball/putter line.
