How difficult to reshaft Ping irons?

Like the title says, just wondering since they don't look like traditional irons (no ferrules).

easy - although some would say let ping do it -- for resale if nothing else.

Steel PINGs - Easier since you don't have to mess with ferrules so long as the shaft is not seated with a ball bearing like some of their putters

 

BeCu PINGs - Let someone else risk their health.

i've reshafted a number of sets of ping irons. it is a pain, even with a shaft extractor (i have the bench vise model), since the epoxy ping uses is about 5 times stronger than anything any other company uses. you will have to heat the heads a lot: i usually start with the heat gun to avoid discolouring the hosel, but then give up after about half an hour into the first shaft, and use the torch.

 

when you reshaft the clubs, make sure you don't grind or file too much of the chrome off the tip of the new irons, since the hosel is so short, and the tip will rust if the chrome coating is off above the hosel.

 

it is worth doing it, though, since the clubs actually feel much better with DG or Rifles.

Yeah...their epoxy is evil. Getting the heads off can be a chore if you don't have the tools. I use an aluminum shaft clamp and a wooden fork to torque the mothers off. Still a pain in the butt. Usually I just torch the mother and step on the head to twist off. Joe told me to use MAP gas as it doesn't stain the head compared to propane. Joe's crazy so that's that. MAP is @#$%ing hot!

 

Other than that, the bore is alittle wider than std taper...use coarse shafting beads. Ping just has to be the freak.

You can't really blame them as they are only trying to protect their brands quality. Ping definetely IS top craftsmanship and it takes a real craftsman to fix their stuff - I always let Ping themselves to it - trying to protect the costumers warranties!

 

 

 

 

But I'm glad it's ONLY Ping who's making it so difficult for amateur clubmakers... Life would be boring if we couldn't do our own repairs/quick fixes

I have all the tools but my knowledge in reshafting is limited as i've only reshafted about 5 times (all drivers).

 

However, I do have a Ping S59 lying around, I think I will practice on that first before jumping in.

 

Hopefully, anything I screw up can be fixed by a professional.

hi again: the only problem with MAP gas is that you might overheat the shaft, and instead of getting the head off, you might torque the shaft in two right above the hosel. i have a wilson bullet back iron that has the bottom inch and a half of shaft still in the hosel because i overheated it. i have to drill out that head anyway, so it's no biggy, but it does make work. MAP is best for not discoloring the head, though.

Reshafting Pings are typically pretty easy. I've done hundreds and these were probably the easiest irons overall. Tapered shafts + no ferrels.

 

First off, forget the heat gun and shaft puller. Total waste of money.

 

Just take a torch to them to heat them up. They'll sometimes "pop" once the bond is broken, so be careful when torching it. Once heated and bond is broken, I cover it with a towel, hold the head with my feet, then twist and pull the shaft out. As for anything left from the torch, just go over the hosel with Blue Away and a towel after it's cooled down.

 

Prep an inch of the shaft tip and epoxy in. An alternative to shaft beads is simply a thin, very small strip of paper. Just something to keep the fit tight if needed. My personal preference is shaft beads only when installing graphite shafts. You can drop a drop of black paint or dye or something similar if you want to get fancy and make the epoxy black, or red, or pink, or whatever you want. Once the shaft is in, grab the head, turn it upside down and give it a strong tap, or thump, into the ground to secure the shaft in the hosel. DON'T TOUCH THE CLUB UNTIL THE EPOXY IS FULLY SET. After it's dried, trim to length and grip.

 

Should be relatively easy, even if you don't have much experience. Don't get caught up in any equipment you don't really need. This should be cheap and relatively quick after your first few. Good luck
