Mount Rushmore of Golf

You can't summarize that with just 4 golfers, it's a stupid question.

Matteo Manassero...Luke Donald...Lee Westwood and Colin Montgomerie...all Major winners......those guys were clutch!

Golf Digest is posting something about who would be on your Mount Rushmore in Golf? Tiger Woods answered Sam Snead, Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Me.

I thought I would throw this out to WRXers. That list sounds good and who am I to argue but - if I take out Jones, I would probably go Tiger, Jack, Hogan and Snead.

What say you?

I've got to agree with Tiger---Jones, Snead, Nicklaus, and himself.

But leaving Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, and Ben Hogan off isn't very easy.

Palmer was great, but not really better than the likes of Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Gary Player, Tom Watson, and Nick Faldo in terms of his actual play. The pop culture factor added a lot to his greatness.

It's a lot like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, and Barry Bonds, all having played in different eras. Palmer was Joe DiMaggio--pretty nearly there.

It's hard to be the greatest of all time when nobody gets to play for all time and you can't compare them in the same time and place.

Just being on the same tier with others who dominated in their own time is as high as you can go with no arguments.

I wonder if the fact that Snead’s win record is a big mark influenced Tiger choosing him over Hogan.

That must be the case. He was obsessed with Hogan's mastery of the golf swing and even switched to an instructor in Hank Haney that was indirectly influenced by Hogan. If we are talking about the Top 4 in golf just for accomplishments, I believe Hogan is right there with Jones/Jack/Tiger.

THE Mount Rushmore or MY Mount Rushmore?

Mine personally is..

Arnold - he winked at my wife on tee box at Bay Hill made a lasting impression just by acknowledging her presence

Watson - took time to complement my green hat and offered to sign it without me having to ask on St. Paddy's day

Faldo - just has such an impressive stature when up close, played with such precision

Mickelson - always impressed by his creativity, seems like a great family man

I think it depends on when you built it. If you were to build it today you'd have to include Bobby Jones, Jack and Tiger, the 4th is the toughest, a case could be made for Ole Tom Morris, Arnie, Mickey Wright or Sorenstam.

Big difference between greatest players and ambassadors.

What about Byron. Cant disagree with 11 straight wins though. So why that’s not considered. And early retirement or else more wins.

IMO, Mt. Rushmore is about recognizing "founding fathers", Tiger is too young.

So Jones, Jack, Arnie and Sneed. Hogan could be in that mix too...

TR wasn't a founding father ; )

I think it should be Jones, Arnie, Jack, TW.

Actually, cant keep Hogan off. He had the swing everybody wants (but cant have ; )

Plus he played as dominantly as anyone.

Gotta have 5 faces on Mount Golfmore.

I don't think Tiger was off base with who belongs there, but a better answer would have been something back at the media like, "that's for you guys to decide."

There's just no limit to the media's silliness.

Yep, they just keep repeating things!!!!

it would have to be 5

Yep, have to capture at least part of the era between Jones and Arnie. Hogan vs. Snead would be really good argument. I'd have to come down on the side of Hogan but not on personality (but then Tiger is on there in spite of as well, lol). Just iconic achievement for me, and my opinion only.

Yup revolutionized the game.Like Jones came back to ticker tape parades in new york after his british victory. His record for 10 years was as good as anyones ever.

Snead's personality wasn't great either. Nelson destroys both of them in that department. I would go with Hogan because he was more dominant than Snead. Career Grand Slam is a big deal. Hogan's performance after the car accident is a huge deal as well.

In addition to the 82 record, I also think those injuries in recent years might give him a new perspective on Snead. Old Sam stayed healthy for decades and was pretty competitive on the PGA Tour in his 50's and 60's. That is probably pretty mindblowing to Tiger given all the injury problems he has had in recent years.

Sam Snead had the swing that everyone wanted, and it lasted a hell of a long time.

Yeah, thats true too.

In fact, I remember one of the great old players disputing that Hogan had the best swing. He was saying it was Sam Snead who was the ball striker.

But, no US Opens?

Tough to get on Mt Golfmore without one.

Then again, Arnie never won a PGA.

Maybe it is actually 4.

Jones, Jack, Hogan, TW.

Gotta think this through. This cheeseburger deluxe thats comin should help me cerebreate ; )

I don’t think it’s arrogant at all. It’s just being honest. If he doesn’t lit himself then it’s false modesty.

In all reality, it a no win question for him to answer.

I like the fact that he even answered it, old Tiger probably would have given a short, curt “non answer”.

If Jack was asked and he did not include himself, would that makes sense? if he did would he be considered arrogant?
