Coolest person you have played with?

I’m out in the UK on holiday and decided to play a round at The Shire in Barnet.

I asked a guy behind me if he wanted to join up and make a two ball. He kindly obliged and introduced himself as Trevor.

We got talking and he told me he was a DJ (I thought sure sure in my head)

We had a great time and had a great chat about golf, the Ryder cup and just general life.

Wasn’t until I got home and started chatting to my Auntie that I found out it was none other than the British DJ Trevor Nelson. Who’d have thought haha!

I won't name him, but we had a doctor from South Africa at our club that raised three doctors, was an accomplished marathoner, and when his kids were grown and on their own, adopted two kids from Eastern Europe. He was a good golfer, a lot of fun to play with, and very funny. He took a big job in another state, but everybody hopes he comes back when he retires.

Have played with a lot interesting people, both when I have been on vacation or when they were on vacation (I had a standby pass at a resort course for a number of seasons). The two "coolest" guys I played with were when I joined a buddy of mine with the last name of Katz when he played with Bobby Riggs (former tennis pro, golf hustler and Bill Jean King's protagonist in Battle of the Sexes ). When Don Johnson (Miami Vice) made the stubble look fashionable, my buddy Katz (who has done some modeling and golf commercials) was pictured unshaven in a People magazine article with the caption "One Cool Katz."

Played once with a With a guy JP swears was part cadaver. He appeared almost translucent and his handshake felt like his body temp was about 63.

We had a guy like that at the club I grew up at. His wife was probably the un-coolest person I ever caddied for. Not only did she nag him all the time and boss him around, but when he returned to golf after a 2+ year layoff due to illness, she reaches into his bag, pulls out some moldy raisins and starts shoving them in his mouth.

Marines. Scary dudes haha but, fun golfers.

Navy Seals. I'll just leave that here.

A couple amateurs / guys studying to get their pro-cards. They're very very cool with teachings and lessons.

I'll say the most interesting cat that I've played with is my Dad. He's always willing to lend a help hand and then give me a nice little "chew out" if I don't listen to him haha.

Used to golf with a state representative a lot. He was just a great conversationalist and a great dude.

As a 13 year old kid I played alot with a mid 20ish Army NCO named Bob Balnis, who was the coolest guy I've ever played with.

He drank, smoked, swore, chased the ladies and hit his drives further than my young eyes could follow. He was as big and ugly as Jack Reacher (not the Tom Cruise watered down version) and had wrists bigger than a jack hammer operater.

He had the nasty habit of stomping on his persimmon driver with his steel spiked shoes after he hit a bad one, and after one season the driver head was reduced to the size of a 5 wood.

He basically did everything that a young kid thought was cool, but I'm happy that I didn't grow up being 100% like him.

Got to play 36 (over two days) with Dan Jenkins and discussed Dead Solid Perfect.

One of my favorite books. And my favorite movie! The basis (with a little editing to more accurately reflect my game) for my username.

How many Ben Hogan mentions while you played?

I played with him back in the late 80's and he used old Hogan clubs with decent skill.

There were plenty of DSP lines being used, like after a bad shot "that won't hurt you, it might fu@k up your score, but it won't hurt you."

He ordered a steak and scotch for dinner, and never touched the steak. Smoked a ton of fags and ordered about 5-6 more scotches.

He autographed two copies of DSP for me with odd comments. It was a great two days.

My wife. She doesn't play but she is a runner and will run along side of my cart to practice for her half marathons and triathlons. She's my hero :) I did get her to play once, she pretty much hit the ground several times, and hit the ball 10 and 20 yards, but she kept laughing and having a great time. It rained on us, this was back when I could still walk when I played. We got drenched, but we had a great time. But she made it so cool because she never got mad at a bad shot, never worried about her score, and didn't let the weather bother her. She just had a great time, and so did I just being with her. Being cool doesn't take a 'popular person' sometimes, it just takes a an enjoyable person with the right attitude. By the way, here's another thing that makes her cool... she's a 97 lb. breast cancer survivor of 24 years. Can't play golf but has won nearly 40 1st place medals for 5k's to half marathons over the years. This spring, out of nowhere she decided to enter triathlons, and won each one in her age group. She ended up winning the last one and is the State Champ for 2018. My hero, can't hit a golf ball, I can't run. :)

Lexi Thomson a couple of weeks after she had turned pro (she was 15 I think). Her brother was playing in a Juniors Championship tournament on the Stadium course and she wanted to play golf instead of watching, so they put her in our foursome on the Valley course. Very cool, she shot a smooth 69 and was very engaging.

Former mini-tour player Tom Miller. He is just such a nice and genuine guy. Loves the game, doesn't mind passing the time sharing some great golf stories and hits the ball incredibly.

He is now an Engineer here locally and I play in a league with him. Every match he greets his opponents with a smile, a handshake and a "play well".

But playing with him (well against him actually) is very humbling. Some of his stories about the struggle on the mini's are just amazing. Really a great guy to play with/against.

I got randomly paired with a Web.com player at my home course here in Phoenix about a year ago. They were preparing to host Q-School Finals the following month (and are doing again this year) and he was there for a couple practice rounds as he had never played in Arizona. He was not only friendly and engaging (we rode together in the cart) but a hell of a player obviously and it was really neat to play my home course with him and play tour guide for the day. To top it off I then got to follow him when he returned for Q-School the folllowing month where he was equally friendly and took time to chat with me a few times between holes during the tournament round in which I followed his group.

He won a tourment early last season and came extremely close to earning his card. I’ve text him a couple times since to say hey and/or congratulate him and he has responded every single time. Needless to say, I’m a fan now and have been following the Web.com Tour more closely than ever before.

I worked at UST for a bit and had the good fortune to be a prototype product tester and design engineer. Played with several pros back in early 2000s. Most notable being Mark Brooks ('96 PGA Championship winner...tiny, tiny guy).

Recently in the metro area have played lots of charity tournaments and been paired with Art Still and Neil Smith (former KC Chiefs DEs). Lots of local execs that have some, let's say, interesting stories of their journey to success.

Several former LD competitors (incl. top 8 finisher in the last couple years)...those boys are just HORSES.

Have been blessed to play with a lot of great people including quite a few from the site...Hawkeye...DSS and many others. But one of the funnest rounds was playing with Zeke Bratkowski who was Bart Starr's backup QB in Green Bay. He had serious talent. At that point he was probably around 65 but still a consistent 250+ off the tee and dead straight. Obviously great stories but just a quality guy. He took the game as seriously as anyone I've ever played with and treated the event like it was a Super Bowl game. He wanted to win, badly. Lots of fun back and forth with him.

I played with Esteban Toledo in a pro-am, and he was a cool customer.

Probably the coolest guy I ever played with was an old partner of mine named Jack. Jack was the sort of middle-aged guy that you could tell had grown up from his earliest years in a country club environment. He was married to a blueblood Northeastern lady and vacationed on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard every summer, which is unusual for someone living in Tennessee.

Jack was a great golfer and a chain smoker. When it was his turn to hit, he always got really focused and moved very deliberately as he approached the ball. The last thing he'd do before addressing the ball was to pitch his lit cigarette onto the ground somewhere nearby, to be retrieved after he hit his long predictable draw down the middle of the fairway.

Never got excited. Never scored on the wrong side of 80. Just piled up the pars until the round was over.
