Impact position: Drills/Cues to get more side bend and keep trail arm bent longer.

Looking for suggestions on drills/thoughts/cues to get my impact position a little better and maintaining a squarer club face longer. Looking to get a little more side bend and right arm staying bent longer through impact. I’m sure this can be accomplish a multitude of ways but I’m looking for a number of ways to go about it to try and see what clicks best for me. I have a attached a few stills at impact. Good post, guys with a lot of right elbow bend are trying to reduce it many times

Is there anything that you would suggest or would ideally want to see differently at impact? What about shoulder line and chest a little more open?

Left miss. I’ve made huge strides and am playing my best and striking it my best. My miss, although nowhere near what is used to be, is a slight pull or pull draw most with mid to short irons.

My advice is not to make any aesthetic changes.

 

Get on an LM, pressure mat, 3D etc., and see if there are any red flags before you start messing with a good swing.

 

It’s likely something small like getting pressure left sooner...or more.

Ball position change to change launch direction.

Thanks, Monte. Definitely not looking for anything major to change. But as you said red flags or something small that could lead to consistency issues with directional dispersion.

I posted a couple DTL vids in slow mo to my Instagram(driver/3i/7i). Looks like I'm getting pretty steep in transition, especially with the 7i. Given my misses are more common with short/mid irons it makes sense.

Maybe it just a illusion but it looks like your right hand separates for your left hand at the top..is that true?

Get on the swing catalyst and go from there. Swing looks solid, most likely something small... ex: grip, ball position, weight transfer. Keep up the hard work!

I do have a tendency to get wide in the takeaway but narrow a little bit when I transition into the down swing. Regarding left wrist flex, do you mean a little more bow? Or wrist flexion to flatten the shaft as a start the down swing? Or something else entirely?

Well I learned something last yesterday..

 

If I've been playing my best golf in recent months and I get to the course to get my once a week 45 minutes of practice time in and trying to decide on whether to hit balls or play a few quick holes to work on a little swing tweak...CHOOSE TO HIT BALLS!

The problem I see in these pictures isn't your right arm it's your hips not clearing. Ball won't go left if you keep speeding your hips through AND it'll increase your lag, compression and distance as well as hitting it straighter. Should be able to see both butt cheeks with club at impact. When you stop your hips from clearing you let your hands catch up and hands flip over and ball goes left. Everything looks great with your arms and shoulders, just keep your hips whipping through.

Hips not clearing certainly isn’t a “problem”. You can see both my butt cheeks and my hips are cleared about 45* at impact which is certainly enough to be consistently playable. Would it be nice to clear them a little more? Sure, but it’s not a red flag.

Little revisiting here. I’m in Oklahoma so my golf over the winter is quite limited. It consists of 18 holes once every 3-4 weeks in upper 30’s to mid 50’s temperatures. There are no indoor facilities within an hour of me so I don’t hit balls any time in between. As you can imagine, it’s difficult to keep a swing dialed in, let alone a “new swing”.

 

After yesterday I feel I’ve FINALLY dialed in the cue that make such a huge difference in my ball striking and scoring from last fall. Unfortunately I constantly tinkered in the fall trying to create a little better look or angle which in turn made it difficult for me over the winter to focus on or remember exactly which cue/motion made such a big difference for me. Hopefully going forward I won’t keep searching for something else when my results are already so positive.

 

I have uploaded my last 3 swings from yesterday on my IG link below if anyone would like to see. 8i, 8i, 3i. I remembered one major cue from the fall to help clear my hips better and restrict my lateral move forward(left butt cheek up and back from the ball) but i forgot about the other cue. I remembered it yesterday..from the top of my swing I want the feel of dropping my right elbow into the top of my right pocket, and the turning around. As you can see here, i was focusing on that on my last 3 balls and my hips weren’t clearing as much as I want(because I wasn’t thinking about it) but even if they don’t my strike is still very consistent and very narrow miss.

This is my goal for the year as well, get into a much better impact position. I'm one of those who plays well, but could play really well if my mechanics were better.

 

I really want to get that trail elbow pinned into my side before impact and clear the hips well(rotate vs slide).

That swing is looking awesome. I can see where Monte is talking about more left wrist flexion and right wrist extension (probably what the other guy was talking about your hands separating). It's really hard to see but I guess he is seeing where your right hand could be pressed more against the grip. But then if you change the wrist angles IMO you'd have to also change your release pattern. Why mess with something good? Many pro's have your impact position, and it worked out pretty good for them LOL.

 

I think you are looking at some pro impact positions where their right elbow is still bent at impact. Take a look at the side view, and you'll see that the hands are more in front of the ball, and right wrist still bent as well. This has to go along with the right side spine bend or else you'd be chunking the earth. Your snapshot is a tiny bit after impact though so who knows maybe you do have that position at impact. In my experience the more I do that the more my ball striking as improved (it's just easier).
