My only goal for the year was to get my cap to about a 2 which I did. If someone is already a scratch, and stats are pretty solid, what kind of measurable goals would you guys recommend? I'd obviously like to make more birdies, so maybe just lowering total putt average while maintaining GIR %? Thanks for any thoughts.

While these are very good options...I need to start playing competitively first haha. I think for competitive play my initial goal will be to break 80 :joy: (not joking)

**Separate** note....What do you guys think of combo set makeups? Trying to minimize offset and am going to order the MP20 MB (currently play z785). While I really want to do 5-PW MB with a 4i cavity, 7-PW MB is more common. Am I dumb to be considering 5-PW?

My bag has 5-PW MB and 3, 4 CB. I went with the Titleist options, so they flow together reasonably well. Just make sure that whatever you go with has the right lofts as you move from one to the other. As to whether 5 and 6 should be MB or CB, that's really about your game. If you strike it well enough then the MB will likely be fine. If you're a little off, the CB will help some. That said, I suspect the margins are tiny these days. Most MBs are relatively forgiving.

Do you find the offset difficult to cope with in the CBs? Like you're hitting 8 and 9 irons all day then you have to hit a 4 and all of the sudden it looks like a shovel and wants to go left?

On the separate note, what are you trying to achieve with the CBs? If you need left-right forgiveness then almost any good CB will work. If you are looking for higher launch, double check the vertical CoG for the clubs (Maltby MPF data on Golfworks site). Many high MOI CBs have fairly high vertical CoGs and may not launch high off firm, thin lies.

Main complaint with the z785 is the offset. I know great players play offset everyday, but it just throws me off, and I already fight a pull/straight-ball overdraw. Secondary complaint is that I feel like I really have to put a lot of effort into working the ball which can sometimes cause big misses. I don't feel like I can play a nice easy cut or fade with the 785s without really manipulating everything. Certainly this has a lot to do with me and my swing, too.

I agree with you. I absolutely hate offset and always search for whatever iron sets have the LEAST offset when I'm in a buying mood as I, too, fight a bit of an "over-draw."

I don't. I just looked and the CB is only 1/100th of an inch more offset than the MB in the 4 iron. I can see a very slight difference, but it's so marginal I don't think it affects anything.

Interesting to hear how everyone’s competitive years panned out. Mine year was horrendous with not enough time to practice and when I was practicing, having gone for a couple of lessons it was clear that I was simply ingraining too much of the rubbish into what was there already. Fortunately, having got those lessons I have a better idea of what was going so (spectacularly) wrong and I am genuinely pumped for getting plenty of practice in over the winter to come out strong in 2020.

Year has come to a close with another us am 4 ball qualifier in good old december weather. We got 1.5 inches of rain the day before the tourney and were forecast for another 0.75 during the round, luckily we only got about half of that and never anything torrential. Oddly we played the ball down and although the course drains well, there were a lot of mud balls on the day.

Happy to say I improved on my individual score from last year although I'm not sure how. Missed the first seven greens, then hit 2 of the next 3 and 3 putted them both, and took a penalty stroke in the middle on 9 trying to drive a short par 4. Ended up with 7 greens, 3 fairways, 2 3 putts, and the penalty stroke and shot 76 which wasnt half bad given conditions. Best examples of how the ball was flying were an absolutely crushed driver, 3 wood on a 550 yd par 5 that left me 80 yards in and another crushed driver, 7 iron to reach the 430 yard 18th.

Unfortunately the team score got worse this year as my partner is battling his swing right now and we were only able to use his score once, so we came in at +3 74 vs. Last years even par.

Scores were all over the place with the qualifiers taking advantage of the softness at -9 and a 2 for 1 playoff at -7 with the back of the pack coming in at +11. By comparison last year the winners shot -7 and last was +3. Even though the winners were -9 they only shot -2 and even individually they just made a ton of birdies and played great back and forth as a team.

Still a successful year I think as we placed in the money in a local scratch four ball early in the year and I got to play the us mid am qualifier as well as local city championship and got a lot of experience. Definitely feeling more comfortable in these events and will probably get some ncga qualifiers in next year as my schedule seems to match up with some of the tentative dates better.

OK. So 2020 is off to a great start. Yesterday I finished my first tournament of 2020. The McClure Cup at Bayonet in Seaside, CA (Monterrey).

There was good, bad and ugly. I made the cut, which wasn't a given after a pretty scrappy 77 the first round. I struggled quite a lot with my rhythm and strikes.

In the second round I shot 72, which could have been better but was pretty OK. So 149 made the cut, which came at 153. I hit my irons much better in the 72 and had some good birdie looks and managed my game pretty well.

The third and final round I shot 79. I drove it pretty well, but my misses were not good. But worst was my mental game. I made some very poor decisions that I attribute to fatigue. I hadn't played 3 days in a row in 8 months and typically only do it once a year. The mind needs practice and repetition as much as the body. So I ended up making two doubles and bogeying a par 5 due to a bad decision trying to hit a difficult shot.

Anyway, finished at 228, which isn't good but Bayonet is a tough test and I am excited for the steps forward I took. I can't wait to do it again.

Oh. I forgot the important part. I finished 27 in a field of 100 or so.

I am almost positive I was the oldest player to make the cut and I might have been the oldest player in the field.

In the first two rounds, the ages of the two guys I played with didn't add up to my age (42).

In the final round, I played with a 27 and a Junior at Fresno State. But I loved every second.

Haha - I feel your pain. Last year I played with a couple of kids in the Met Amateur. I had them by 6 years on my lonesome.

Worst one that happened to me was about 10 years ago, so I was "early" thirties. Went out to a bar in Manhattan with a bunch of work people. Guy on the door was ID'ing everybody. I got my license out and had it ready to show him and when I get up there, he takes one look at me and says "don't worry, you're good - go ahead". I still get laughed at for that one now.
