Well, in line with keeping me honest... had our provincial mid-am qualifier recently.  Temps ranged from 53-59, with winds 15-20, and rain that was never more than a heavy drizzle but more on-again/off-again than Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.  But like the US Postal Service, neither rain, nor wind nor other weather conditions can keep my ability to suck in a tournament down.  I hadn't started out too badly. Parred the first hole, bogeyed the second(which was actually the goal, it's very tough).  But then a 5 footer that I pushed was a bogey.  Then a 3 footer(but this one was my rain jacket).  Couldn't buy a putt, at least those I was confident in my read.  4 3 jacks, although one was from about 90 feet, but still.

The comment very early in this thread about tournament golf requiring a brutally honest assessment of your game came to life during the round.  Being in the weird zone of 50, I'm really aiming to get to where I can play senior golf somewhat competitively, but it feels like it will be a long time till then.  Oh well, on to the next.

Big congrats on the tournament.  The results often don't match our capabilities or reflect the amount work we put in every day.  Just being willing to put a score next to your name for the world to see, requires a very different level of commitment that few golfer's ever achieve. Competitive golf reveals character like no other sport.

One of my mentor's told me that even when you finish dead last, you beat everyone that didn't enter.

On to the next tournament!

Funny enough, I always say my first goal is to win, realistic or not.  My second goal is not to finish last.  Which I managed to avoid.  So I'm 1/2 on the day.

I had alluded to a previous tournament in some brutal conditions.  A guy from my club was playing in the later flight, and I had run into him after my round and before he teed off.  He made the comment that "today is a character builder."  Unbeknownst to me at the time, he had come down with some illness, and proceeded to shoot a 95 that day.  But he posted that score.  A number of guys would have no-carded or withdrawn.  So it was interesting to see you make that comment, because it dovetails nicely with that.

As a matter of fact, the fellow for whom I was keeping his score had said he was about to pack it in during the round.  He finished a few shots better than me, but ultimately didn't.  I told him good job sticking it out after the round.  He seemed glad he didn't bail.

Arizona mid-am at Ocotillo in Chandler. 6850ish yards, par 71, lots of water that forces you to hit less than driver off the tee. The course was in terrible condition. Slow patchy greens and the fairways were soaked trying to keep the grass alive. Lots of mud balls.

Round 1: Tournament round of my life. I shot a bogey-free 5 under 66. An eagle and 3 birdies. I got up and down from 2 green side bunkers on the front and don’t think I missed more than the fringe the rest of the day. Leader shot 64 and I was T2. Uncharted territory and surrounded by +4 to +5 handicaps.

Round 2: Afternoon tee time and it was 100+ degrees. I was nervous but got off to a good start. -1 through 7, then I chunked one in the water from a fairway bunker and made triple. Birdied 10 and 11 to get back to even. Then I completely sh!t the bed. It was slow and waiting around in the heat got to me. I combined bad decisions with bad swings and shot 78. +2 now with the cut at +5.

Round 3: Not a whole lot to say. I played decent and left 5-6 putts short in the middle of the hole on the garbage greens. Shot 73 and finished 46th

I’m looking at the positives. I proved to myself that I’m capable of going low against elite players in tournament conditions. I’ll do better the next time I put myself in that position.

Nice playing(great playing from my perspective, but this thread is mostly sticks, so, just trying to keep up the image 😁).  Did you feel the fairway bunker shot you rinsed was just a bad swing or a bad decision?

I think a number of us are still looking for a good way to deal with having to wait around for a dog's age to hit shots.  Do they use a time par in Arizona tournaments?

Bad swing. Lie was fine, 155 to the pin, probably 120 to cover the water. The better decision would be on the tee shot. I hit mini driver. 2 iron doesn’t reach that bunker.

Yeah, the marshals were following the group in front of us around all day and I think they finally gave them a bad time at the end. They finished more than 2 holes behind us the previous round. There will always be slow players. I just need to deal with it better.

I was reading some of the documents, and I did not see anything about a time par.  Here in Ontario, you literally have a certain amount of time to finish your round, and it's fairly generous as well.  4:40ish.  I did some timekeeping at a championship at my course, and it's a pretty good system.  Wherever they decide are the time checks, when the last ball drops, you mark the group as through.  The first group has to meet their time par, and every other group has to come in within a certain amount of time of the previous group.  It works out fairly well.  Sounds like they could use it in AZ.

I really enjoyed reading this until I got to this bit...

I will say that's not unusual though. My region amateur last year was in July - strokeplay, with top 31 going into knock out (plus defending champion), then five rounds of knock out in 3 days (36 hole final). 90s, humid and not a lot of shade out on the course. Qualifiers were a good range of ages. By the third round of match play, there was one 27 year old (who did actually go on to win) and the other seven were all 17-21. Stamina really becomes an issue in multi-round events. Especially for overweight old guys who work a 9-5 behind a desk.

There were a decent amount of mid-ams that made match play this year, but we all fizzled out. Consecutive 36 hole days all walking will do that. The winner is typically a college kid or recent graduate that is ready to turn pro later that year.

Every year I get tired or sore and tell myself I gotta work on stretching or lifting weights in the winter and then I dont do it. Maybe this winter will be the year I do lol.

One thing that REALLY frustrated me was my green reading. I had my brother caddying for me and on day 1 he was able to read the greens REALLY well. I made a few longer putts strictly because he saw something I didn't. Day 2 he wasnt reading them as well and I struggled because of it. So it highlighted how I need to figure out a better system. Whether it's fully committing to aimpoint and getting the level back out to practice it, getting a straka greens book (that has worked before for me), or finding a system that finds the low points better... Whatever it is, I need to put some actual practice into green reading. Nothing stinks more than watching your opponent lip out from 170 yards for a gimme birdie, hitting it to 4 feet on top of him, then missing the putt due to a misread.

This sounds vaguely familiar. I think I may have said it to myself about 30 times now.

I'm still in my 20s and this is me as well. Just tough to convince myself considering I probably wouldn't ever want to lift in season. The soreness and tightness just makes for worse golf than before I started, lol.

State am qualifier was yesterday. Was surprised on the first hole when they said we were playing for 10 spots in a field of 40 guys. Course was soaked and playing easy, so I assumed the cut would be even par or 1 over. Started poorly with small mistakes and didn't save myself at all on the greens. I was +3 through 5 holes until I turned it on and went birdie birdie par birdie eagle. I added one birdie and bogey to finish at -2. The cut ended up being even par. Tournament isn't until July 28th, so lots of time for the game to fall out of shape.

What the hell?  You couldn't beat the other guy?

😀

How do you guys prep for a tournament when the course doesn’t necessarily fit your game? Played a practice round today for our state Mid am qualifier which is in a few weeks. The course is almost half dogleg lefts with plenty of trees, a few forced draws, and as a guy who plays a fade, there were some awkward tee shots. Do you guys do anything different to prepare, what’s worked for you? Switch up to play the other shot shape? Or adjust your strategy and course management?

I would look at how I could ideally play without changing too much about my game. Trying to move the ball the way you're not used to is not reliable and honestly I'm almost surely going to score better by changing clubs so that I keep it in play rather than trying to draw my driver (which isn't a thing I can consistently do). If the course really doesn't set up for me, then I'm going to go and enjoy myself playing the best I can and not really worrying too much about whether I get through or not. Then I'd probably make a note to avoid going back there. Having said that it's pretty rare that I come across a course that you can't play your stock shot on.  It might not suit the eye as well or might mean you have to lay back a little more, but it's still playable. DJ pretty much exclusively hits a fade with his driver and he managed to win a Masters.

Totally agree with your post great advice for a course that does not suit your shot shape.  Jack mostly faded driver and won 6 times as compared to Martin Kaymer who changed his shot shape to a draw for the masters and never had the same success

  • 3 weeks later...

Played the West Texas Am this past weekend, senior division.   Missed the cut by a few 77-76, just couldn't make anything over 5-6 feet.....so frustrating,  3 birdies in two days, a one footer, a two footer, and a two putt. But overall my putting was very stress free, almost all my 2 putts were almost gimme range at worst, many lip outs or stopping right next to the hole, speed control was very good.   A few bad breaks, totally stymied twice right behind a tree and chipped out sideways, and got a nasty fried egg in a bunker with the green sloping away, but that was the result of a badly pulled PW into the wind.....

Short game is very weak right now, for some reason have developed a bit of the chipping yips around the green since I came back from my bad back.  Only one up and downs from near the green with anything other than a putter (and that was a bump and run with a 7 wood), but from 30-40 yards, hit some nice shots, almost holed out twice from that distance.

Day two played with a guy I have paired up with in a two ball event before, very good player.   He shot 67 with 5 birdies and an eagle.  He has a very good short game and it one of the best putters I have played with in senior golf.  He went on to win the senior divsion, birdied the last 3 holes on day 3 to win by one.....

Next individual even with be state senior am qualifer, then club championship in a couple of weeks....

I played in our state's senior am.  I had no delusions of winning it, but I was much more relaxed on the greens.  I think my question after the Memorial Day tourney was just the first tournament jitters.

I do have to say this though, while I have a handicap that is good enough to qualify I am not a serious golfer and I now know it.  While I want to play well, and I want to win, I don't live and die on each shot which I sensed others did which created this weird tension.  There is an old phrase that "sports create character" with which I have always disagreed.  It should be "sports reveal character," there was a DQ, there was a drive ahead before everyone had hit because a player was slow (not me leaving or being left behind at the turn), there was the sense that somehow winning pro shop credit would complete some of the people with whom I played.

I was surprised they flighted it after three days, and I was outside the championship flight based on my play, but I do feel completed because I won some of that coveted pro shop credit.

Going into the tournament my index was a 2.9, at the end the index was 2.3 so while I didn't play great for the full three days, there was some good golf... for me.

Nice playing. 🙂

You guys give out proshop credit in your State level events???

Well, since I didn't win it I can't say for sure, but the entry was $250 and the winner won $185 and I was pretty sure it was pro shop credit... at least that is what I was told.  He was saying the last thing I need is another golf shirt which led me to think so.  It could have been cash, but either way, the winning amount was a pittance.

Definitely NOT cash. Any cash awards violate the rules of amateur status.

You simply must learn how to his a straight ball when required. Many pros struggle with this as well, and most of them will take out a 3-wood and then it down to hit almost a hook on those types of holes. Are you able to turn over a 3-wood when needed?

Texas is pro shop credit, I was just looking at the email they sent out.  First in Sr. got $500, 2 tied for 2nd got $325, fourth got $100.   Super Sr. first only got $250.  Open division got $700 for first, paid out down to 7th.  Entry fee was $325.

But I guess the payout is better than a sleeve of balls, a pair of socks, or a bag of tees....

Played the state am last week. I felt like I was playing well coming in so I was optimistic. Teed off early day 1 and got off to a rough start with 2 bad bogeys in the first 4 holes. Hit the next 14 greens in regulation and had a bunch of looks inside 10-12 feet for birdie. Just couldn’t get much to go in and settled for even par 72 to end the day 35th or so out of 140ish guys and 7 back of the lead. Day two I didn’t have my best stuff. Quick bogeys on 2 & 3 took me closer to the cut line followed by another on 6. Bounce back on 7 with a decent drive and a 7 wood to 10 feet for an eagle look. Unfortunately left it in the jar a couple rolls short. Bad weather was in the area all day and the horn blew right before I hit my 4 footer for par on 12. After a couple hour delay and 715ish restart I came out and left my 4 ft par putt short lol. Hit 2 good shots into the green side bunker on 13 and hit a poor bunker shot that barely got out and left me 20 ft for bird and didn’t convert. I did 2 putt the 2nd par 5 on the back for bird, but didn’t get any putts to go down the stretch and ended the day in the rain pushing darkness right at 9pm with a bogey on the last to miss the cut by 2. 72/76 ending at 70th I believe. Top 60 and ties make the cut. On to a couple local events now before US Mid Am qualifying later in August.
