This has been a fun read. I don’t feel real qualified to post in it since the move and job change have bloated the handicap to levels I’m not comfortable with. So I haven’t played much at all, and very little of any tournament golf. But I am contemplating playing a small local event Sunday. They call it the “Tour Star”. One step off the back off the back of the boxes, double cut greens, and the toughest pin positions. Haven’t decided for sure, I miss playing competitive golf, but also feel like it’s likely just throwing money away.

They must need a good laugh today E?!?. Because I’m pretty certain that’s what it will bring. But in a thread full of good players, we might need a dose of doubles thrown in!

72 in the dogfight this morning. Made a couple par putts of 6-10 ft length. But didn’t make any birdies outside 4 ft. And I feel like I putted well. Was almost a self fulfilling prophecy.as I made a game out of it after the 2nd hole where I left a putt laying on the lip that wouldn’t fall. Counting that one it was 5 birdie lipouts and 2 par putts that were of 4 ft or less that I put on the edge and rolled over the edge. These lipouts weren’t violent. I just walked up and tapped the remainder in. Dead middle then out.

So this week the grind goes on. Let’s hope I peak Friday and it travels through the weekend !

Played a cash game today on a relatively short and easy course (6600, 71.9 or something like that, very fast greens for me) with a few 10+ handicaps. I never seem to play well in these situations....both in regards to the course and the competition. Also don't seem to do well when playing not insignificantly faster greens, say going from 6-7 to 10.

Played in my club's 2-man member-member this weekend. First day was better ball, second day was aggregate of partners. We won gross. Shot 4-under 67 on gross day. Very pleased. Shot 5-under 32 on the back nine: par, par, par, par, birdie, eagle, par, birdie, birdie. My mental game is better than it's ever been.

I should have explained better. I don't generally expect to win against higher handicaps, sort of know that going in. What seems to happen though is I play down to my competition. Lack of focus, whatever you want to call it. I think I shot a really janky 78. Just like any sport, I play my best when playing with guys better than me, and play worse when I play with guys the opposite.

I went, signed up, played,.....then slunk back home. With that above mentioned dose of doubles?

Actually, I hit the ball really well. Short game really let me down. Hit nine greens in regulation, and missed six less than a yard off.....and got up and down once out of those six times. Every lie was ugly. Caught a couple of bad breaks along the way that compounded the problem. Really only one truely poorly played hole.

Oh, well, it was fun to play my own ball again. Glad I played.

And I think that’s what it’s all about. I don’t know this to be certain. But. I suspect that every good finish in actual competition takes a handful of humbling rounds to prepare you . For me and my sanity as an Uber aggressive competitor the key is to find that snippet of improvement , no matter what it is and ride that.

Currently for me I know that my mental game and state has made a huge , maybe even gargantuan leap from last summer to now. I may still have miles to go. And maybe only I can attest to the improvement. But I know how I felt last summer and I know how I felt during the state qualifier and those two aren’t the same guy. Period. Biggest stage I’ve played on and I was just there in the moment without a self conscious thought. And every thing I had been doing from Preshot routine , to swing , to shortgame and even putting held up. I didn’t make putts , but. I know that I rolled it online. And that I never got the stone hands feeling I used to get. That’s progress.

Said that to say. Grab the smalllest positive you can and build on it. It’s frustratingly slow at times. But , it seems to be the only way to get there.

i played a real round yesterday for the first time in a week or so; trying to get my game back into shape for the state open in 2 weeks. needless to say it was incredibly up and down.

par, par, double bogey, birdie, bogey, birdie, eagle, bogey, par / par, par, bogey, par, bogey, par, par, par, eagle = 72 (E)

GIR: 72% ; FIR: 79%; Putts: 33 (with 2 3-jacks); Penalties: 1

Blade and Gio, you’re correct, good just to play again. With the pressure of a number up behind your name. On the plus side, a lot of good players with lower handicaps shot a lot worse. There were some uglies out there.

They did make it about as difficult as possible. Never seen the greens so firm.

glad to have you back man. and yes, the pressure COULD get to you...but it's only on you if you allow it to be there.

from personal experience i always play worse when i have a number in mind or, when i start thinking about what a score could be (good OR bad)...i play best when i'm just pinnin my ears back and playin shot after shot, focused/driven and just accepting of things as they come at me...then i sign whenever they tell me to stop b/c i've played all 18 lol

There was a little pressure, but not as much since my expectations were so low going in. I was actually in a pretty good place mentally and executed what I wanted to do pretty well. I just wasn’t prepared for how the ball reacted on the greens (and never did really adjust). Outside of the final number, I actually left pretty pleased.

As to getting it back.......I’m not sure I ever had it! But you guys were definitely right when you said go play. Have to admit, I’m kind of looking for another one now.

Well guys and gals.

Tis the eve of the 3 day County Championship.

Riding a big high of caddying for my 11 year old son last night to a big match win which saw him have only 11 putts in 9 holes and drive a 230 yard par 4 on the fly ( they play up junior tees ) over a river to about 15 ft and almost drain the eagle putt. This was after a really bad spring for his game. We worked 2 weeks on driver for this match and in his words “ he was hitting bombs like Phil “. Lol.

Sounds crazy that I’d have a kid who is such a great putter. He just walks in and bangs them in the back of the cup. Reminds me of watching Rickie Fowler’s stroke for reference. No fear. I’ve actually been learning from him believe it or not. Lol

Anyway. Good vibes on my mind. We’re going to try to just freewheel and see what happens. Swing is A ++ at the moment with every club. ( and has been for months). Just have to roll the rock.

This was after a really bad spring for his game. We worked 2 weeks on driver for this match and in his words “ he was hitting bombs like Phil “. Lol.

Good luck out there and have fun. And congrats to your son! That's some awesome playing from having struggled. I guess that eagle putt was one of the two he missed (or did he hole something from off the green?) I played with someone a year or so ago who had his kid's name on his ball. I do that now too. When I'm having a bad day out there, my ball reminds me that it's really not that important and that the good things in life are waiting for me when I get home.

Yep. That was one of the 3 putts he missed. He also holed a putt from 3 ft off the green for a “no putt” I suppose.

I know people brag on their own kids way too much. I try hard not to be that guy. But he was so clutch with putter last night it was nuts. To be fair he did miss a couple greens and pitch up close to 1 putt. But he also banged a 12 footer in on 3 to go 2 up. And holed a 8 footer on 5 to stay 1 up. Then a 6 footer straight up hill for par to win the hole and Match on 7. ( they play 9 holes regardless of the match outcome ).

Funny (to me ) quote from last night that I heard. From the opponents grsndfather. After my kid made that putt on 7 to win he says “ well. I know which kid I’m not playing for a coke on the putting green “. I almost choked on my water. Lol

He doesn’t know the half of it. We have a putting green in our back yard along with shortgame/ wedge range area ( live on a farm ) .... he beats me regularly on the green and is starting to get there with wedges . I told my wife that putting green might pay for his education one day. Not that I wasn’t going to build it either way. lol.
