Interesting round today. Hit 8 greens on 11 fairways.

8 greens....and shot 2 under. 24 putts. That's 51 putts through 2 rounds but only 18 total gir. Moved from t14 to what appears will be t9. 4 back of top 5 and 8 back of lead. Leader shot 71-63. Win looks out of reach but the putter is working and I left today's round feeling the best about my swing since the event started. Let's see if I can getitgoing tomorrow.

Tournament over and I'm back home.

72-70-71 for 3 under total and t8 out of 100 guys. I was t9 last year. A few guys really took it to the course...

Winner was -14, 2nd was -13, 3rd was -9 for the 3 days. Those guys all shot 64, 65, 63 respectively in one of their rounds. Winner shot 64 in the final round. 2nd place guy shot 65 in final round. Course was super easy tho. Resort-esque private course. Wide open fairways with really only 3 holes you had to take care of. About 6850 total yards.

Every par 5 was 530 or under. I played them +1 for the tournament and made 1....ONE birdie on them. That was my tournament. Was near the green in 2 on all of them every day and just didn't convert. Slopey greens with some tricky pins but I still had plenty of chances that I just didn't capitalize on.

The good...driving is awesome. Putter is back big time  (27-24-32). 32 putts on 15 gir the final round.

The bad...my course mgmt on approach shots lacked at times. And my 3w was a huge disappointment. Part of the reason I missed so many par 5 birdie opportunities is because I wasn't able to hit my 3w square or on my target line much at all. Some work to do on that club. Pretty sure it's shaft related.

Few months off from competition except for skins games here and there.

Ojai Senior Cup was this past weekend. Had a blast. Played reasonably well and putted very well but made too many mental mistakes to seriously contend.

Thanks, Bill. That was truly an excellent field. I just really struggle to be fully committed. Work is always in the back of my mind, and I'm out of practice. A few years ago I was on a run and really locked in with my mental game. No longer. Need to get that back.

Back is doing decently. I mean I played four days in a row and only on the last day, on the back nine, did I really have to make adjustments. Went to my step through on the back nine and was even par, so that was decent.

Final surgery consult is today with my neurosurgeon.

Played my first stroke play event of the year, Texas North Senior.   I must admit, the course was a real disappointment, ground was about as hard/firm as any course I have ever played, certainly in competition.  Hardly any grass over half of the property, rocks/dirt, bunkers were a mess, and add in 15-30 MPH winds, greens were passable but still very firm and not growing much yet this year.  Overall it was an adventure.

Ended up finishing 8th out of the 60 in the senior division, 4 back from first, but so disappointed in my finish, doubled the last hole after laying up with a 3 wood off the tee and missing the fairway left.  I found probably the only flier lie anyone had the entire tournament, my ball missed some trees/hazard left, but had a grassy weed right behind my ball.  There was a hazard behind the green so I took a 7 iron from 185 to a back right pin to just play short of the green and hope it would bounce up.  Ended up missing it right in a bad spot, in a  deep low area with just a little grass and hardpan.  I should have just taken a putter  and hit it out to the middle of the green up the sharp slope, but for some reason grabbed my lob wedge and hit it towards the hole.  Of course I skulled it just a bit off the hardpan, it flew past the pin, rolled off the back and into the hazard/ravine about 20 feet below the green surface, Somehow it was playable and I got it on the green about 40-50 feet past the pin and 2 putted for double.

I was just focusing on finishing in the top 10 so I didn't have to do a local qualifier for the state Senior later this year, and I felt like I just let up mentally on 18.  I was grinding so hard for 2 days, I started with a triple bogey on my first hole when the 25+ MPH crosswind just ate up a 3 wood from the fairway and blew it literally off the course to the right, then a stupid bogey on a short par three, so was 4 over after 2 holes to start.  Still given the conditions, I  didn't do all that bad, a lot of really good players made some big numbers on some holes too.....

Thanks.  If I just par my first and last hole, I am the winner, but a lot of other guys could say something similar.  I have never seen so many doubles and triples in an event like this before, especially all the guys in the top 10.  I saw Lewis Stephenson, one of the best senior amateurs in the state over the past 5-6 years also made a double on the last hole, but his cost him the tournament as he was leading by one going into 18.

Giving it a shot at Texas State Amateur qualifying the end of the month, going to be a challenge but the Mid-Am location is just too far away this year to try for it (thanks Texas for being too damn big).

In the lead at the SCGA Four-Ball with my partner Craig Steinberg. Tomorrow is a big day. I have never won an SCGA event though I have come close quite a few times.

I will certainly be nervous a bit. Craig, not so much. He has won just about everything there is to win in California. Very happy to be playing with him.

Playing one of my favorite courses. Pure golf.

Solid start. Now is the time to pay it off. Good luck and play well.

Which site are you playing? Agree about the mid am, too far from Houston this year!

Shot 73 76 for a +7 total in my first 36 hole event of the year (and the first in I think over twelve years) which was good enough for tied 15th out of 62.  -4 won it so I was a good way off the lead but my inner demons were worried about finishing dead last so I'll take that as a win :classic_laugh:

Enjoyed it and learnt a lot! Next event won't be until June now due to work commitments!

Committed to following goals for the 2023 season

1. Compete in at least 5 stroke play individual events.
2. Break par in a competitive round

3. Have a competitive scoring average under 75

4. Qualify for 1 event (TX State Am, Houston City Am, US Am and US Mid Am)

5. Have at least 3 competitive rounds without a 3 putt.

So far I have played 2 events. First one was pretty sloppy all around, but reiterated the need to practice the mental side of the game as much as physical. Will report back later in the year with updates!

Tough conditions for sure. All of the leaders played in the wind for the majority of the round, and that course is just tough as can be in the wind.

Very pleased with 14 straight pars on that golf course. Had some ungodly up and downs. Lol.

Congrats David very happy to see you get your first SCGA win with Craig that course can play brutal

Qualified 2nd low for the SCGA Senior Amateur yesterday at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. Course was in decent shape, but the greens ... Wow. 11.5 and bumpy. Horrible combo for qualifying. You did NOT want to leave yourself with 3-footers coming back. So all day I just hit greens and 2-putted 14 pars, 2 birdies, 2 bogeys. Hit 13 fairways and 17 greens. Not that difficult when the course was playing only 6,350 for us old folks...

Scores below. Actual tournament is the end of this month at Ironwood CC in Palm Springs. Nice track. 54 holes and WAGR points. Looking forward to competing!
