I played in our state 4 ball this past weekend, just couldn't eliminate a few stupid mistakes, we didn't make enough putts, we finished 5th.....6 bogeys over the three days just killed us, the winners in our senior division I don't think made any, we finished 7 back.   Beautiful course in great condition though, perfect greens and fairways, rough just thick enough to sometimes catch a flyer, sometimes just kind of hack it out, or maybe get a break and make clean contact.

My partner and I won the SCGA Four-Ball last year. Was my first SCGA win ever. Will never forget it.

Good playing, by you two, but yeah: 2 bogeys a day in a four-ball ain't gonna get it done against a solid field, darn it.

Do you think you and your partner were capable of making 2 or less team bogeys over three days? Or were they in the cards for you no matter what?

I won our club's senior club championship this past weekend, 2nd year in a row.   Not many played, realistically, we had 3-4 people who could win.   Second year in a row I also won in a playoff, beat my regular partner/friend, the guy who I paired up with in the senior division of the state 4 ball a couple of weeks ago.  He's 13 years older than me (I turn 63 next week), and he really is a better player than me even at age 76, especially since we played the forward tees.

He shot 69 the first day, I shot even 72.  Day two he was just off a bit, I birdied the first hole and he bogeyed, same on #5 and I was in the lead, which I held until 18 where he birdied to tie me, I shot 71 to his 74, third place guy was 2 more back.   In the playoff, off the first hole I cut the corner over water of a short par 5 and had a 9 iron to the green and hit it pin high on the fringe.  He played left off the tee around the water, hit a hybrid right of the green and had an easy chip up hill, he then chunked his first chip and left it short of the green.  I hit a little bump and run from the fringe to a foot for my birdie.  He proceeded to chip the next one in to tie......  Second hole I hooked my drive left in the rough, hit a really good wedge from a thick lie but was still 20+ feet away, he hit a wedge from the middle of the fairway to 6-8 feet.  I missed my putt and just assumed he would make his, but he missed.  I had a makable birdie putt on 3 to win but missed.  Our fourth hole is a sometimes difficult par 3 over water and with water left, and an L shaped green, if the pin is back left and you are long right you have no shot.  Anyway, playing the forward tees to the back left pin was about 135 that day (back tee would be 185), I hit a PW with a slight helping R to L wind that landed about 3 feet from the hole but spun back and left to about 10 feet, but below the hole.  The other guy ended up almost exactly the same distance from the hole, but he was on the other side putting straight down hill, and was away by about a half foot at most.  I thought he made his putt but it just didn't have the speed, I then made mine going straight in up the hill.....really the only putt I made all day.....  Best thing about it, I get to keep my special parking spot.......

Have the state Senior Amateur next weekend at TPC Las Colinas, looking forward to that.

Fantastic, Mike! Do you play any stuff outside California? How about the Carlton Woods Invitational in Houston? You should look into playing the Ojai Senior Cup one of the these years. Ojai is a great vacation spot for you and the missus (if you have one) and the tournament is top-notch: https://www.ojaiseniorcup.com/

TPC Las Colinas is where my buddy, Steve, is a member. He's a fine player at 59 years old and still probably a +2 or better. Wonder if he's playing. I will check the field!

We definitely could have.  On just the 3rd hole alone, I hit 3 great drives cutting a dogleg and  had a LW in all three days, my partner hit some bad shots, but I made a couple of bogeys and played it 2 over.....  Day one 3 putt from 20 feet, day 2 chunked a wedge from the middle of the fairway, day 3 missed a 10 footer for birdie. We both bogeyed a mid range par three the first two days.  My putting was just OK for the three days, I think I made 2 or 3 putts total over 10 feet in the entire tournament, and one was on our first hole for a birdie....

I haven't played out of state since moving to Texas, only play a couple of events that aren't TGA or club events, never played the Carlton Woods.   I moved here from North Carolina, I did play a few more back there, I have an ex-college team mate that lives in Greenville SC, and was a member at Chanticleer and played in an event with him there (He won the South Carolina Senior Am in 2017).  My partner in the TX 4 ball plays all over the place, he has played some events out in California, not sure if he has played in the the Ojai Senior Cup, but I know he plays some of the SoS events, and goes out to Palm Springs.

Nice, Mike. thanks for sharing. I've played in the GolfWeek "Senior Nation" events in Palm Springs the last couple years, though last year I had to WD with back issues. I bet those are the ones he plays in. What's your buddy's name? I've met a bunch of guys from Texas at the events.

The state Senior Am was a bit of a disaster, missed the cut by 4 shots, 78-81.  My short game just abandoned me.   Tee to green hit it pretty well, but had 3 doubles each day, some of them were the result of going brain dead from just off the green, then also getting the yips on day two......something I never really have had.   Had 36 putts day one and 38  day two....horrific, the greens were actually pretty good, can't blame the conditions there.   I only made one birdie, hit a 9 iron to 2 feet on 11 day one, then three putted the next three holes.....

TPC Los Colinas played tough but fair IMO.   We had some wind too, scores in general I thought were pretty high, winning score was +2, and that was 3 clear of second, the cut was +15.  Need to regroup for our club championship next weekend....

Edit:  just looked at the online score card, was counting my putts again and realized I signed for a bogey on a hole on day 2 where I parred......didn't matter at the end of the day, but sums up how things went....

That's the way it goes sometimes. Putter goes cold and short game goes south. I'm playing the Senior Women's Stroke Play in a couple weeks at Walden on Lake Conroe. Just hoping for good weather.

So turns out he was in the field, but had to WD due to a work trip. He was/is the club champ at TPC Las Colinas, so he was in automatically. Darn it.

Long Island Mid-Am Wednesday and Thursday. Played at the Bridge out east in the Hamptons. Greens were PFQ both days. Yesterday we had a few up tees and it was dead calm all day. Today we had basically no up tees and it was not dead calm at all. Cold and windy. Interesting. Day one is one round and then the top 40 get into round 2. Some detail follows:

Started on ten. Par 5, Driver left into waste area, 7 iron up to about 75 yards, decent pitch that showed me how firm the greens were. 30 feet. 2 putts. 5

11 - Par 4. About 410. Necky spinny driver that went half way to nowhere. Left me 170 in. Pulled a 7 iron that kicked left off a bank, decent chip to 12 feet. 1 putt. 4

12 - Par 4. 2 iron bad swing blocky cutty one that wound up in the rough on a bank with ball well below my feet. 170 front, hit a 6 iron because I thought it was the longest club that would clear the bank in front of me. I was wrong. It hit the bank and bounced off down the fairway before trundling into the rough on the left. 73 yards. 54 degree the grass caught it up and it plugged under the front lip. Couldn't get that out of the bunker. Next one got out of the bunker, but not enough and it rolled back in again. Then hit a pretty good bunker shot to about 12 feet (was about 30 yards with a tier to deal with). Missed it. 8.

13 - Par 4. Driver, 8 iron about 25 feet. 2 putts. 4

14 - Par 3. 160ish. 8 iron pulled a little left and it ran off. Good putt from the fringe. 1 putt. 3

15 - Par 4. Driver. 9 iron to 8 feet. 1 putt. 3

16 - Par 3. 132. Wedge to 8 feet. 2 putts. 3

17 - Par 4. Driver. Awful pitch from 65 yards - hit it over the green. Good putt from the fringe to about 4 feet. 1 putt. 4

18 - Par 5. Driver. 4 iron to lay up into a bunker about 75 yards short. Knifed a 54 over the green. Putted down a bank, up the other side, onto the green to about 6 feet. 1 putt. 5

1 - Par 4 Driver, wedge 25 feet. 2 putts. 4

2 - Par 3 6 iron to about 35 feet. 2 putts. 3

3 - Par 4 2 iron, wedge to 25 feet. 2 putts. 4

4 - Par 4 Driver, 58 to 18 feet. 2 putts. 4

5 - Par 3 200 downhill into the wind. 4 iron to 35 feet. Uphill into the grain and ran it 5 feet by and missed the comebacker. 4

6 - Par 4 pretty dreadful driver into the left rough. 190 in ball below my feet. 5 iron to 12 feet (!). 2 putts. 4

7 - Par 5 much better drive. 4 iron to 12 feet. Putt to 5 feet (left it short - I thought it was going to be blazing fast down the hill and it just stopped). Holed that. 2 putts. 4

8 - Par 4 2 iron into fairway bunker :@ wedge caught the lip and kicked out. Wedge to 7 feet. 2 putts. 5

9 - Par 5 Driver just caught right fairway bunker. Feet out of the bunker. Ball in. No lip. 4 iron, 58 to 18 feet. 2 putts. 5

Total - 76 (+4). 17 holes in even and one hole in +4, so that was fun. Even was leading. I was T12

Day 2

1 - Par 4 Driver, 7 iron 30 feet, 2 putts. 4

2 - Debacle 1. Par 3 6 iron, caught the ground on the way back, decided mid swing that I was still in good shape so I hit it. I was wrong. Into the trees on the left. Provisional. Found the first one deep in the undergrowth. Hit it about 6 inches. Then got the next one on the fringe. Putted on to 4 feet. 1 putt. 5 (+2)

3 - Par 4 Driver, 8 iron 30 feet, 2 putts. 4

4 - Par 4 Driver, 58 20 feet, 2 putts. 4

5 - Par 3 downhill still, but about 140 yards this day. Caught a massive gust of wind when I hit it and wound up well short in a bunker. Great bunker shot that landed in the fringe and rolled down would not stop rolling till about 8 feet by. 1 putt. 3

6 - Par 4 Driver A wedge missed a little left. Putted on to about 4 feet. 1 putt. 4

7 - Par 5 Driver 4 iron 58 to about 15 feet. 2 putts. 5

8 - Par 4 2 iron in the fairway. Knifed a wedge from 115 that had to be going about 100 mph when it reached the green. Got up there to find it about 8 feet away from the hole. Guys in front told me it rolled all the way up a big bank behind the green and came back down again. 2 putts. 4

9 - Debacle 2. Par 5. Pulled drive that kicked left into junk. Penalty drop in the waste area. 4 iron pulled left that kicked into the junk. Penalty drop. 5 iron way left. Pitch did not make the green and rolled way back. Putt from about 100 feet up a big hill to 8 feet. 1 putt. 8 (+5)

10 - Debacle 3. Par 5. Driver in fairway bunker. Splashed out. 5 iron up the hill from about 180 pulled left into greenside bunker. A LOT of sand in there. Didn't get it out. Got the next one out, but barely. Putt from the fringe to 3 feet. 1 putt. 7 (+7)

11 - Par 4. Driver in rough beside bunker in the fairway. 8 iron to about 10 feet. 2 putts, 4

12 - Par 4. 2 iron in the fairway, 8 iron about 40 feet with a tier to putt down. Putt got away from me a little and I missed the comebacker from about 6 feet. 5 (+8)

13 - Par 4. Driver, 8 iron to 50 feet, 2 putts. 4

14 - Par 3. 185 into the wind. All world 4 iron 10 feet left that went over the green (didn't think that was even a possibility). Putt from fairway runoff area up steep bank to about 4 feet. 1 putt. 3

15 - Par 4. Driver, A wedge to about 35 feet. 2 putts. 4

16 - Par 3. 9 iron to 6 feet. 1 putt. 2 (+7)

17 - Par 4. 3 wood, 54 to 25 feet. 2 putts. 4

18 - Debacle 4. Pulled driver about 20 yards left of where I was aiming. Turns out I was not aiming anywhere remotely sensible (different tee from previous day and couldn't see half the fairway). Lost it. Provisional ball in play. 2 iron into the same fairway bunker as day 1. Knifed it into garbage over the green. Hit a pretty good chip from the clag that had a bit too much speed and the line I had to hit it on (or miss the green down another hill on the right) swept the ball away to the left and it ran off into greenside bunker. Not a bad bunker shot (by my standards) to about 8 feet. 2 putts. 9 (+11)

76-83 for 159, which was good enough to T22. Course was seriously hard. Best round day 2 was 75. I led the field in pars (25 of them) by 2. Fewest bogeys (3). I suspect I also led the field in quadruple bogeys though. On day 2, I made no sixes, but had every other score from 2 to 9.

Friend of mine in round 1 shot 75. Two eagles, four birdies, seven pars, one bogey, two doubles and two triples. In a 7 hole stretch, he had 6 different scores vs par and five colors on his online scorecard (because double and triple are both orange). Then day 2, he started double, triple, quad. He's a +4 and I've seen him play. He's seriously good. Boggles my mind that he can do things like that, but like I said - it was seriously hard.

+6 was the winning score.

Ojai Senior Cup this week, one of my favorite events of the year. Keith Brown has made this into a marquee senior event on the West Coast for sure.

  • Great weather? Check!
  • Fun, interesting course? Check!
  • Stacked field of nationally-ranked seniors? Check!
  • Cool town with nice restaurants and a funky vibe? Check!
  • Course that plays short enough for Obee to compete with the long knockers when his back is in shape? Check!

What else do we need???

Hoping to improve on last year's 11th place finish. Back feeling decent this week. We shall see!

Last 2 events of the year coming up...

Royal.st cloud 2 day event 11/2 and 11/3. Not a big event but a course I play a bunch. Winning score will be several under par. I won it last year at -3.

Then florida state mid-am December 13-15. That's a big one. 160 player field cut to top 60 after 2 days. Playing a course that could give up -10 over 3 days or could be barely under par if the wind blows.

Had our club championship a couple of weeks ago, absolute train wreck.   Started 7-7-5, double, triple, bogey, 3 balls in the hazard and 2 three putts...... six over after 3 and never recovered, shot 81.  Day 2 started with a birdie then 3 bogeys,  then settled down a bit, but on the back nine hit a flyer from the rough on 14 over from 110, bogey, flyer again on 15 long right into some trees for a double,  then hit 2 ball OB on a short par 5, chipped in for a triple...... Day 3 was weird, 5 birdies, all were 10-25 feet putts, but made 4 doubles, some really stupid ones.  2 were with wedges to the green, both times hit it over the green, one misjudged the wind, second, literally hit the wrong club, thought I had my GW in my hand, it was my PW, hit it 30 yards long over the green down a hill......

Scores were really high in general for some reason, conditions were not that bad, some wind, firm fairways but softish greens.  Winning score was 3 higher than the highest it has been since I can remember.  Have one more event this year, our Oktoberfest 2 man BB, its a round robin with 5 nine hole matches, one of the most fun events we have each year, maybe we can win again, I think I have one three times since I've been a member.

I don't think i ever posted in this thread....I had a pretty good season this year. I didn't do great in my home clubs events , though i notched my 3rd straight top 5 in our club championship.....I can't seem to put together 3 good rounds in a row. I had 2 of the top 8-9 rounds in the tournament but my Sunday was a disaster.

I finished 15th in a big Quebec Mid-Am event here, out of like 90~ guys , so that was also pretty cool. It was a course i'd never played before so i was happy to do well on the first day when i shot a 76.

My highlight of the year was probably playing in our QC interclub event at home. My team won group 3 (meaning we are basically 8th in the province/state). I was the top player at my club in this event and won 2/3 of my matches against the other teams #1 player. So this was some pretty good golf. The guy i lost to was a +4 , but i think i gave him a good game.

I don't typically do a ton of events, just because of the whole family life stuff. I'd like to do a bit more next year. I did try to qualify for a couple of other team events but didn't make it , though these are tough ones to qualify for due to limited spots

Worst showing ever in the Ojai Senior Cup, by far. Back would not cooperate and even putting/chipping hurt. I decided I was not going to withdraw.

My previous years' scores:

66, WD
74, 72, 73 (11th)
71, 75, 70 (12th)

This year:

79, 84, 77 (don't even GAF what place I finished).

It's embarrassing and disappointing. I need to get fit and I don't know how to do it without a complete and total change to my life, which I simply don't have time, energy, or $$$ to do right now.

Wife and I exploring turning the garage into a work-out area and hiring a personal trainer.

And/or a microdiscectomy. I heard from another guy at the tournament who had one and it was like a miracle for him.

Thanks for listening. Back to work.

I had my last event of the season yesterday and today. Yesterday was a lovely day, if a little chilly. I started well. Par on 1, birdie on 2 (holed about a 20 foot putt down the hill - if it didn't go in, I'd have been struggling to make par. Greens were lightning fast. Then hit a tree on 3, left me too far. Laid it up to about 95 yards. Hit that to 20 feet and three putts. Next hole, par 3 - good tee shot (4 iron into the wind from about 185), three putts, bogey (+2). Caught a flyer on 5 and first chip from about 15 yards off the back of the green didn't get on the green (fiddly shot and I tried to be a bit too clever), next chip was a pretty good shot, but it just wouldn't stop. 8 footer for bogey and missed it (+4). On 6, I hit it left behind a tree. Had 130ish from the rough with a fronting bunker to clear and the aforementioned blindingly fast greens. PW off the back foot that flew the bunker by about 2 yards and it wound up 6 feet away, but above the hole and breaking. Gave it 8 inches outside and missed low, but a par after my doubles. 7, par 3 up the hill, tee shot landed about 15 feet from the hole, but unfortunately that was in a bunker. Bladed that over the green. What I thought was a good chip that eventually finished about 5 feet past where my tee shot had landed, but at least on grass this time. Hit a good putt from the fringe to a foot or so and made that for a 5 (+6). Great drive on 8, pitch on to 35 feet and ran it 4 feet by and made the one back (+6). On 9 I hit a good drive, then a 6 iron to 18 feet. Hit that putt 8 feet right of the hole and it ran 3 feet by. Hit that one outside left and missed it right. Then someone who had just finished 18 told me that they had seen a lot of that so far. He and his playing partner both had a 5 putt. Anyway - +7 at the turn with 20 putts and 6 GIRs. 10, hit my drive a little left, tried to get three wood over the next fairway bunker (long par 5 into the wind) and failed. 75 yard bunker shot. Two tier green with the pin on the lower tier. Last thought - don't hit it on the top tier. I hit it on the top tier. Hit a decent putt that took off down the hill (not surprising) and that eventually stopped about 6 yards off the front of the green. Next putt from there to about 10 feet and missed that. Double (+9). 205 yard par 3 down the hill - choke down 5 iron to 30 feet and holed it for a 2 (+8). Next hole - hardest on the course. Looooong wait on the tee apparently because the pin position was a joke and everyone was 3 and 4 putting. Drive in the left rough - ball below my feet and having to keep it under some tree branches. 6 iron from about 165 punch absolutely dead at it. Get up to the green and it's 2 feet from the hole. Made that (+7). Then made 6 pars in a row to finish +7, which wound up being T16 and made the cut comfortably.

Today I was +2 after 8, then lost a ball in some leaves on 9 and had to go back and retee. Double - +4. 10 the pin was on the top tier and I wasn't. 3 putts. +5. 11, 6 iron in left bunker, 58 into right bunker. Hit that out to about 25 feet - how my putt didn't go in I'll never know. It came back towards me as it missed on the high side by about a quarter of an inch. Double (+7). 12 - good drive, 130 to the flag downwind and uphill. Pulled 9 iron but couldn't imagine how it would stop, so I hit a hard wedge instead. Didn't make it. Bunker shot from there didn't either. Chip on to 6 feet and missed it. Double (+9). 13 par 3 180 into the wind. 4 iron and the wind flipped on me as I was swinging. Pulled it left about pin high. Chip caught downslope and ran 15 feet by. I was thinking I just want to mark not a double on my card. I hit a decent putt about as softly as I could and it ran 6 feet by. Missed that. Double (+11). 14 shortish par 4. 4 iron off the tee left me 95 downwind. Hit my 100 club and it came up short - no clue why. Chipped up to 4 feet and 6 inches was not enough break. Bogey (+12). 15 short par 3. A wedge that landed a bit left, but about pin high that wandered off the front of the green. Putt up from the apron to 7 feet and made it. Par. 16 long par 5 into the wind. Good drive. Good 3 wood. Pitch and run from 40 yards that got up a tier, but then decided it was having none of that, so it came back down again and left me 45 feet up a tier. Hit that a bit firm and went 10 feet by. Really good putt from there that went in the middle of the hole (18 inches of break given). Driver wedge to 18 feet and 2 putts on 17. 18 I hit a good drive, 5 iron from 170 into the wind uphill missed right and found myself behind a bunker with no room to play with. Chip didn't make the green (but did at least clear the bunker). Next chip wasn't too bad, but rolled down the hill and the wind to about 25 feet. Missed that and left myself with 4 feet from above the hole and to the right. Gave it about 8 inches outside from there and made it for my god know's how manieth double. +14. 77-84. Not very good, but it was seriously hard and I didn't really feel like I did a whole lot wrong.

Overall, the greens were just frighteningly fast and too fast for the conditions and slopes. Kid I was playing with on 7 (par 3) had a 8 foot putt for a par straight up the hill. He left it an inch short in the jaws. He missed his next putt from 25 feet away too. It got a bit silly.

Oh wow, that's just awful. Hate when committees don't get the set-up right. It's a tough job to make things challenging but reasonable. But there's no excuse for balls rolling back 25 fee when they were next to the cup...

I agree - but there is nowhere on that green you can put a pin and not have something like that happen if the wind happens to be blowing in the same direction as the slope. The greens are just too fast for the slopes there. For the most part I enjoy putting on them, but that was not good. It's not fair when one person putts up to an inch and stays an inch and another putts up to an inch and winds up 25 feet away. It was agonizing watching the ball just drift down the hill. Probably took a good 30 seconds to cover the 25 feet. Every moment was "is it going to stop?" Eventually it did, but wow. I did play in a match play event in England about 25 years ago. Wind was howling - volcano type green - slope that matched the wind. My partner putted up to about 3 feet away and the ball rolled into an old pitchmark and stopped. Oppo had six goes from 35 feet away on the fringe and gave us the hole. That was silly too.

Sounds like just an unfortunate set of circumstances then, not a committee that doesn't get it.

This past weekend was our season ending Octoberfest event, 5 nine hole four ball matches, with every hole a point and a point for the 9 total.  We did win, but it helped in our first match our opponents played the worst I had ever seen from them, we won that match 8-2.  Also on the second  day we did play well, we were 7 under for the 18, some good ham and egg play......
