919 tour , no gw ??

Anyone else disappointed that there is no gw available in the 919 tours. This is almost a game changer for me as I have moved to including the gw edge in iron sets particularly with strong lofted pw around 46 degrees. Not sure why mizzy does this and most other players sets from titleist, ping. Srixon etc have the gw available. In today's day and age I'm sure they would sell a lot more gw then 3 irons .

I imagine people buying the tour version are buying gap wedges separately

Most people who actually fit into that model do not want a set matching wedge. That kind of thing is more for converts than Mizuno loyalists.

I agree with the OP. I was shocked that there was no 919Tour Gap. My blended set has 919Forged 4-9 and then 919Tour PW and then goto the 900F gap wedge and like it, and the back up is the Mizzy ion blue S18 50-7. The 900F is on the shorter side of the face height scale, fitting nicely between the T7 and the S18 and not to much of a drastic shift in shape from my 919T PW. I just like that on a full shot it’s 114-115yards consistently with a one hop and stop control on the ball I play. Also easy to hit a 3/4 shot 100yards for my shorter approach shots with a predictable one hop and check mate.

So here’s my point. SOme implying that better players don’t want a stock gw. Well I’m a scratch older player who does . Not as long as I use to be and play full gap wedges from 110. Also use heavier graphite in irons and dynamic gold in wedges54/58. No one has to buy a stock gw but it’s a great option to have for a consumer. I would put tours in similar category as ap2 where it’s available . I like to change my 54/58 wedges regularly, not so much a 50degree club.

I would have ordered one if offered, however I ordered a Vokey that match my 56 and 60 so no biggie. I would have preferred the Mizzy GW over the Vokey due to being forged vs cast and I like the feel better. It is all good though because to be honest, the PW in the Tour set is my least favorite shape.

I get that, but in their marketing research, if Mizuno thought the majority of players would want a Gw they would have made one. A couple of outliers in a potential buyer population would not be convincing enough for them.

That's a good point , but I wonder if they ever think this way . Why not provide a gw and sell to a guy like me rather then have him jump brands and purchase a 50 degree vokey.

I am guessing because they position their offerings around a core group of buyers and not guys who jump around. The loyalists aren't going to pull a Vokey into the bag (necessarily) when the T7's are there to be had.

I would share one other thing that is completely unsubstantiated past my own experience, but it would seem to hold with the debate at hand. *In my experience* the people who look for a set-matching gw are those who end up full-swinging it. In the decades that I have played Mizuno, I have never come across another true MP line aficionado who was a pure distance hound with the irons. MP's are not distance irons - they are good offerings for golfers who do everything else other than full swing all day long. Such players are more likely to look for a compact (non-matching) wedge to hit such shots with. Now, the 919 Tours are more like MP's than they are like the 919 Forged or HM's. In a way (and as good as they are) I still look at them like "MP's for newbs." If I am correct in any way, it makes sense that Mizuno wouldn't have one in the lineup.

The full swinging, distancy, forgiving jazz that players who haven't traditionally played Mizuno are looking for - there is a reason those guys look at the 919 Forged and HM's, and it makes sense there would be a gap wedge offering for both. 919 Tour is more MP, so it makes more sense to adhere to the philosophy for MP line and dress it up for the new guys who buying them more based on Koepka than their own skill set.

Just my opinion...

I just went through ordering a set of the 919Tours honestly, the PW from the set wasnt even worth keeping in there. I ordered the set 5i through 9i, then went to the S18 wedges for Pw,Gw,Sw & Lw.
