Shaft advice for scratch golfer in irons. Played S400/x100 for years.

Hi,

I'm looking to try some different shafts in my second set of irons. I have played x100 for years and currently was fitted into s400(1.5 yrs ago). I'm 40 now and hoping to try something between and x and an s that is 120-125 grams. Any recommendation on shafts to try that are a reasonable price?

Cheers

If you haven't tried them yet, the NS ProModus3 125 shaft is a little heavier than that weight range uncut, but should be close to it when cut for installing. Absolutely have been a game changer for me since I switched 3 years ago. Wouldn't say cheap, but perhaps you can get a pulled set on the BST for a reasonable price.

If you have been using Dynamic Gold effectively for years, don't mess around too much. Maybe look at the AMT x100/s400's.

Scratch myself. 40 as well. Just moved from s300 to ctaper 120s hard stepped. If you're not a low ball hitter then they're awesome. You know that little bit of curve dg shafts allow? Ctaper doesnt. Dead straight bullets. So straight that those little trap draw shots to left hole locations would end up in a dead straight, middle of the green approach.

I will likely have to move from the low spin Bridgestone tour ball to the higher spin tour ball simply because of spin reduction from the ctapers.

Played the higher spin ball for most of my round Friday and shot 1 under. Need more testing time, but the higher spin ball allowed more workability without losing the striping ability from the ctapers.

I went to the ctapers after hitting them against dgs300, x100, PC lz 6.5, Nippon, etc. The ctaper was the only shaft that I'd hit a shot, call "pulled", look up and see the ball.painting the center line.

Would the C-Tapers play similar to the PX rifle shaft?

I'm not sure. I don't think I've ever hit the rifles.

Thanks - Looking at some on ebay. Anyone have thoughts on using something like the DG AMT white...and essentially hard stepping them once or twice so the 8 and 9 irons are full weight something like a 5 iron has a 7 iron shaft so it isn't quite so lite? I don't know enough about shafts to understand if that would be too crazy.

Thanks

Not that Dynamic Gold are not great shafts, if want to experiment or change, as others mentioned I'd second KBS Tour (I like the feel better than DGs) or the Nippons. I'm one of those who never like PX and wanted to but just didn't like feel.

I am also 40 and have a 100 mph 7 iron swing. I play Ctaper lite X at 115 grams and love them. You can get a ton of speed through the ball and they don't feel soft and bendy at all. I have another set with Tour Issue X100s and I prefer the feel of the CTLX shaft. To me, shaft weight is not super important unless it effects swing weight negatively. I prefer D-0 and at +3/4 inch X100 makes swing weight closer to D-5.

Played the S400s off and on for nearly a decade. Have experimented with the CT 130s; and the 125 S+ and I would concur with everything that has been mentioned here. They have tightened up the dispersion immensely and hot-knife-through-butter in windy conditions. My only two issues are they are quite "muted" in terms of feel and they are not kind when it comes to any joint problems you might have. I am in the process of grabbing a couple of demo irons with the Nippon 125s to try.

Dynamic Gold 120 X100 fits the weight class and reportedly plays slightly softer to flex. An option.

AMT is a animal of itself when we talk hard or soft stepping since it moves a lot in weight.

A Constant weight shaft will add or loose shaft weight equal to 0.5 inch for each step, but for AMT we have to add the difference from one shaft to the other of 3 grams, so a s rule of thumb we can say AMT moves 5 grams pr step up or down, so when you want to get some numbers for how that set looks as comparable weight, ADD 5 grams pr x hard stepping, and you get to see that your PW becomes 140 grams as comparable weight when hard stepped 2x (if we could have hard stepped it, so look at the other #9 and down)

If you dont mind a PW of 130 grams (hard stepped once), but want them more like HS2 in flex, you should consider using HS1 and then tip trim all shafts 3/8 to 4/8" depending on how much the hosel accept before insert problems.

So, look over those shaft weight numbers, and move the numbers 5 grams when stepping AMT
