Mizuno Iron Relative "Forgiveness" Scale

Was kind of thinking MP18 combo set was at the apex of my wish list, but JPX 919T&F looked (and felt) pretty good. I'm thinking the relative "forgiveness" scale (to scale, so distance down matters) might look something like below. Would love to hear from some who have hit them how they see it.

FORGIVENESS:

JPX 919 Hot Metal (didn't care for look or feel)

MP18 MMC Fli Hi (liked these)

MP18 MMC (liked these)

JPX 919 Forged (liked these)

MP18 SC

JPX 919 Tour

MP18 MB

According to Mizuno, the 919 Tours are more forgiving than the SC's.

What?? I would've never guessed that.. always heard the 900 tours were not forgiving at all. Figured as much for the 919. Too bad I'm lefty and can't find out for myself! I guess I've got no business playing mp 18 sc after all!

Tour more forgiving for me than SC.

I read they are close to MMC but probably wrong.

I love my 919 Tours, very easy to hit and love the feel.

I think the 919T is more forgiving vs. SCs? At least for me. ;)

Wow, I clearly did not think this was the case.

A 919F/T combo set might be right up my alley. I would have liked to have liked the SC's but didn't, so was looking Fli-Hi/MMC combo.

Perhaps go with one that is to your taste.

I game the 18MB in prime season and the 900T is my GI, plenty of forgiveness.

Honestly, I was turned off by the fat sole of the 18SC, MMC and 919T which are all the same width.

Really it comes down to what you like at address relative to The 18MB

18MB = shortest heel to toe, thin top line and thinnest sole

900T = longer heel to toe, thicker top line, marginally wider sole and slight offset

18SC = thick top line, fat sole and slight offset

MMC = similar to SC

919 = long heel to toe, thinner top line, less offset but with the same fat sole

I've heard that the 919 F & T are more forgiving on toe misses, which is the bane of my golfing existence. That would be an important concern for me, too.

If you are worried about forgiveness, don't stray into MP offerings. That is why the JPX lines are kicking around.

I've got a set of MP62 and Hogan Edge GS in my rotation along with my Ping i20's. On a good day, I can play any of them. Slight toe miss on bad days gets annoying.

feels like there are so many good choices in the players cavity segment - Callaway X forged, TM 760, Mizuno MP & JPX, Ping i210 - then looking at shaft combos - Project X, Nippon and good ol' DG.

Fitting might wear a guy out just getting down to the finalists! :taunt:

I play the 919T upto 4 iron. I previously played the z545 srixons. The 919T are very forgiving for the category it’s in. I read an article where they said it’s slightly more forgiving than an AP3 ( they used some quantitative measure to determine forgiveness) . I think mizuno has hit a home run with 919t . Forgiving with all the characteristics a good ball striker is looking for.

The 919T is more toe bias which would suit your swing.

The sweet spot of my swing is it towards the hosel so 18MB works for me.

The 900T I find very stable and sweet spot centered.

I think your miss and forgiveness correlates with sole design vs head size. Tour has a larger surface area with mass towards the toe and a higher MOI. That should help toe to heel strikes. Tour also has a thinner sole. I tend to miss it flush to fat, hence the wider cambered sole of the SC helps smooth the hit. Maltby’s factor description has SC’s as irons tour pros wouldn’t play. Really? I hit SC’s better than 900 FORGED. Same shaft/grip, full season of testing/ playing. Right that’s not the OP’s original comparison but what I’m getting at is larger heads play different...maybe Koepka and others have figured out how to slam the ball with minimal face rotation

Funny, I've been working really hard on a less clubhead rotation swing. I've been playing Hogan Edge GS on some X200 SS1 and hitting them well. That head is HUGE / long compared to my Ping i20's even. it sort of just closes itself if I don't steer it. Makes me think 919 would be the right series for me, even though I really liked the MMC/Fli-Hi I hit this past spring.

I had MP-59 irons when they came out and could never get along with them. My swing has improved since then and I came across a crazy deal on a 5-PW set of the MMC with my preferred shaft ($399 new!!) and took a chance on them. I love them. They are a lot more forgiving than I expected. They also feel better than I expected considering my experience with the MP-59. Couldn't be happier.

Spent some time in the hitting bay at Golf Galaxy today with MP SC, MMC and 919F (didn't have a 919T to demo) and they didn't all have the same shaft, so no apples to apples here.

My thoughts are:

 • These are all fun to hit and feel good when struck well
 • SC didn't seem that much harder to hit
 • MMC feels a lot like my Ping i20 (at least off a mat in a bay)
 • I could be happy with any of these

Ultimately, I'll go for a full fitting, but my initial thought is a combo of 919F 5,6,7 and 919T 8,9,P and T7 wedges (or new release) G, S, L (50*, 54*, 58*) and maybe a 919HM 4 iron.

Or maybe I'll end up back with Ping in i210. :dntknw:

I have MP18 blades and SC set (and some other MIzuno sets as well). Unfortunately I cannot provide you with any feedback relative to your inquiry as I am a Mizuno guy and I just don't ever miss the sweet spot.

Seriously, though, I have to that I was hoping for a little more forgiveness from the SC's and it's just not there.

FWIW, my teacher used the parameter that if the word “forgiveness” is even in your thoughts, stay away from blades/MB’s

This is not an insult or critical as among his students were his older Bro, Sam Snead, along with a 5-Time USGA Champion, 6-8 Tour Boys(and one Lady) and too many elite Ams to count, and many had moved to combos or away from the pure blades.

Find the iron that allows ya to put the ball on target the most consistently and that you will, hopefully, with practice, “own.”

If one even thinks of “forgiveness,” they may be a Plus, hell, I haven’t met em but they may be out there and I’m talkin Tour caliber, but one thing that they will never do is “own” that iron/club.

Remember, under the heat of competition, under the gun, even a sliver of doubt over the selection of one’s club for the shot, will have devastating consequences more times than not.

Even if it’s as seemingly benign as a “vanilla” 175yd 6-7i to the back edge of the green, 28’ away from the pin, versus sticking that in at 10-12’ because there wasn’t a doubt in your effin mind where it was gonna land is the difference between a mid-single digit and a Plus.

As always, just my .03 worth?

All the Best,

RP

In the end, only three things matter~

How much that you loved...

How mightily that you lived...

How gracefully that you accepted both victory & defeat...

GHIN: Beefeater 24

I agree completely. For me, I have the most confidence in a players cavity back - if I try an SGI and see anything sticking out of the back of the club at address, I don't believe I'm going to hit it well (reminds me of hybrids, which I invariably hook). Conversely, if I know it's a blade (even though it looks good at address), I'm never quite sure I'm good enough to hit it consistently...and then I don't.

I also like a squarer toe -- good luck finding that today (especially in wedges). I do have an old Willson Staff 7 iron I found in a used bin - love that look and actually hit it well on the range (along with a Mizuno Mp 32 6-iron I picked up used as well).

Anyway, appreciate the advice and will look to try everything off grass this spring where I can see the flights.

BTW, also agree with you about never feeling anything like "butter" when I hit irons well... ;)
