Yeah, heat them as you would any other iron head.  You won't damage anything but you're more likely to change the coloration of a raw head with heat compared to a chrome/satin head.  A lot of folks will do that intentionally on the whole head specifically for the colors, rather than just using heat for reshafting.  Google "torched" iron/putter finishes.  Doing it with a torch offers one type of control/finish, you can also bake them in an oven for a different type of control over the process/finished result.

 

If you want to use gun blue as a finish, yes, remove the rust first.  I suppose you don't have to, but that'd give you a pretty splotchy result.

 

Whether you strip them back to rust free raw metal and then gun blue them or leave them as they are, yes they will continue to patina, though they'll patina differently raw vs. gun blued.  There's a recipe earlier in this thread to speed the process along if you'd prefer, though that more applies to raw than gun blued.  On a gun blued finish you have to wear through that thin layer of blueing before you'll start to see rust.  Or keep them blued and more or less rust free as you would a gun.

Here are those 32s.  You can see they started off darker than those 690s above.  The more coats of gun blue the darker/shinier the finish you get.  You can also see how I've left them alone and raw/rust has started to creep back in depending on ball/turf/bag wear.  You'll have to excuse the somewhat lumpy ferrules.  The guy who had them before me didn't quite turn them down all the way.  I have a set of BB&F ferrules for them, but I've been hitting them so well I'm hesitant to take them apart!

I wish I could be more helpful, but I'm not sure about the effects of heat or whether you should remove the rust before the blue. I blue'd these immediately after getting them back from the chrome place, so they weren't very rusty. I did go over them really well with steel wool, though.

Find someone who is in the old car restoration business and ask them who they use for their chrome work.  To properly restore vintage chrome trim and bumpers on cars you need to first remove the chrome.  It's easy enough for those guys to throw a set of iron heads into the de-chroming tank when they're doing a bumper or some trim.  When you get them back they won't be as smooth and evenly finished as what you'd get from someone like Oughton, but you can smooth them out yourself with steel wool or a Scotch Bright pad.

Just picked these up from a fellow member here, so entirely possible they've already been posted haha.  Raw J40 DPCs.  I had the wedges laying around from when I was playing J40 CBs.  Really great wedges, very under the radar.

Pretty much the same. You do lose some head weight when you remove chrome though.

How it started and how it's going. I'll need to find better paint. Acrylic I got supposed to be "weather proof", but it requires baking it at 350* for 30 minutes. Didn't want to risk melting those ferrules or weakening epoxy. Any recommendations for good paint that won't come off with water?

Finally getting around to taking new pictures of these.  I posted them a few pages back as I got them:

 

 

Went back to KBS Tour V shafts, new ferrules, and took them back down to rust-free raw.  In some places they ended up with a kind of iridescent look which I really like.  Not sure how or why exactly.  Used Klean-Strip Concrete & Metal Prep (phosphoric acid) and Scotch Brite green pads, harsher than CLR but works almost instantly. Wear gloves!

 

 

The 3 and 4i are 545s.  Wasn't sure how they'd come out with the badges removed but ended up really liking them.  

 

 

Half considering blueing them, or screwing with the paintfill, but OTOH I'm pretty happy with them as they are.

I think it's wonderful how many rusty heads are capped with beautiful BB&F ferrules.  Same dudes who would spend $4 per ferrule also swing rust.  I love it.

Both the Miura Gikens and the Vega wedge in a black raw finish.

The finish is holding up better on the Miuras than the Vega. Love seeing them wear! Tools, not jewels.
