RAW IRONS POST YOUR PICS

The chrome is the easy part to remove because it's so thin.  The tough part is the nickel plating which is what they're stripping at the bumper shop in tanks of acid.  I would avoid plating shops that mainly do car parts because you'll lose a lot of weight.  They don't care how much weight a bumper loses but it's pretty important in clubheads.

There are better ways that are slower but don't corrode the base metal so I always recommend a golf specific refinishing company.

That’s a fair point for sure. I’m like +1/2” or +3/4” for length so the lighter weights don’t bother me but for most folks your advice is definitely better than mine haha.

Nice, thinking about doing the same. What finish are you picking?

Curious what the difference is between "RAW FINISH WITH BRUSH FINISH" vs "RAW FINISH WITH HIGH POLISH HEAD"

I'm going with what he calls the "raw finish with a blasted face". For $17 per head it's a no brainer for me

I've done business with Mr. Oughton several times now. Great work, great guy! Definitely wants you to be more than satisfied!

My magic elixir from the menu board is....

- Strip current plated finish to raw.

- Wheel buff the resulting raw head.

- No face blasting.

- No brushed finish.

- No polish.

When I receive them, they are clean, dull, and spotless.

I will soak the raw heads for four hours in baby oil, pull them, let them air dry, and then, repeat the process once.

At that point, I consider them finished, and ready to take on tarnishing.

After a good bit of time, 6-8 months or so, and they've taken on some personality, I'll get them paint filled. I will typically use bright, peal, white. Very conservative with the paint fill.

That's my formula!

Baby oil soak is very effective way to preserve the looks.

These rusted real quick. Might remove the rust as the golf season is over where I live

Those look amazing. Do you know if the forged tec blacks (same era) would have the same finish that makes it easy to strip? Thinking about doing a combo set of these and the one length forged tecs.

Same finish which is just as easy to remove.

This is just at the start of the finish removal process but I’ve seen some examples of rusted Forged Tecs.
I think they would look sick without the badge though.

Thanks!! I completely agree without the badge would be sweet. Anyone tried removing a badge like that before? I would assume it weighs a few grams so it would mess up head weight a little bit.

I doubt the badge weighs very much. It’s essentially an advertisement. It would probably be hard to tell the difference in swing weight. I’d go for it. You could always put a bit of lead on the sole of the club to counteract the loss and still keep the club looking aesthetically pleasing.

Do you put something in the hosel to keep the oil out or does it not affect the epoxy bond when shafting?

Wow those ZX7 are transformed !

Nothing wrong with the stock look, but I'm liking them naked !

I'd be curious as to their head-weights now as I found my ZX7 set about 2-3g lighter than my usual Mizuno MP sets.

Anyway this can be done with T200 or T100S? Sick sticks.

The new T200 would be wierd because the back cavity is covered with that plastic shell.

The T100s is also tricky because the polymer insert would most likely be ruined in the stripping process

Good points! Doesn’t look like I could except maybe for the 100s without the insert. Oh well…guess I just have to admire all yours!

Following up - my set is a 714 MB/CB combo set. I sent them to Mr. Oughton right before Christmas so I expected a longer turnaround. He did confirm receiving the heads and I'm in his queue (very fast response from my message).

Looking forward to sharing pics here once I receive the heads back and showing the build.

I really appreciate the advice in this thread!

Question:  does anyone REGRET having their irons raw?  You'll lose some weight and that could make the subsequent build tricky but has anyone found that the feel is worse (blasphemy, I know)?  We all know how rechroming can potentially be detrimental to feel and I don't want to ruin a good set of irons.

Case in point:  I just picked up some MP-29 heads in 3-PW.  Here is a pic of the 7 iron (worst in the set):

IMG_1830.jpg.abeff10ef78f5dfcb8c05d660b91c19b.jpg

Significant wear mark on the face but the chrome is in good shape and very little bag chatter for an iron this age:  What do you think?  Worthy of getting stripped or leave them alone?  I wouldn't rechrome them and I would like to have a unique set but also wouldn't want to lose so much weight that I ruin a set of irons that have a lot of life left in them - decisions, decisions...
