Case in point:  I just picked up some MP-29 heads in 3-PW.  Here is a pic of the 7 iron (worst in the set):  

 

Significant wear mark on the face but the chrome is in good shape and very little bag chatter for an iron this age:  What do you think?  Worthy of getting stripped or leave them alone?  I wouldn't rechrome them and I would like to have a unique set but also wouldn't want to lose so much weight that I ruin a set of irons that have a lot of life left in them - decisions, decisions...

 

 

Just weight the heads before hand, if they loose to much head weight just get the appropriate tip weights for the rebuild. Never seen anyone complain about feel on raw clubs

Those look incredible just like that!  It will almost be a shame when they change color!

 

I think my favorite raw clubs in this thread so far have all been Srixons.  Something about the angular design that looks brutalist gets toned down when it's not chrome.  The raw finish compliments it so well.

How long do these raw finishes stay like this before rusting to an Orange-ish? Does the baby oil thing someone mentioned help it stay?

It really depends on the climate and conditions you are in.

 

If you live in a super dry area and keep them clean it's pretty easy to keep them looking like raw steel but if you live in a more humid climate it's a lot easier for them to develop some patina.

 

It's a living material once you take off the chrome

How it started and how it's going. Even though I've been playing R flex 95-105g shafts for ages, I finally took these out for a spin (PX Rifle 6.0 Flighted) and they are actually working better than anything I've hit before. These heads have more offset than I'm used to and I like it. Anyway I decided to strip the rust so dropped them in a CLR bath but then went outside to find the bucket had tipped over, so I got varying results and it looks pretty cool.

Watching this one as I have been searching for a set of unique heads to make raw. But I already own and love a set of 785s and the raw Srixons in this thread are awesome, so why dont I just do my own set?

Sorry if this was already asked, but for those who have stripped a set of heads, how did you account for the change in swing weight? I don't see a lot of lead tape in the photos, so assuming you just accepted the difference in swing weight. Any issues there?

Depends on how you remove the finish. Some finishes is removed by vinegar and that won’t effect the weight at all.

 

Removing chrome will strip a few grams but that’ll be compensated with tip weights rather than lead tape, especially on raw heads (my own opinion of course). Im using lead tape quite frequently but I prefer tip weights when dealing with raw heads

Anything more, lead powder plug in shaft. 

 

Anything more than those two, you should likely figure something else out. LOL.

If you need more than a tip weight, something is wrong. No one needs to be putting tungsten powder and a cork down an iron shaft 😂
