RAW IRONS POST YOUR PICS

Depends on how you remove the finish. Some finishes is removed by vinegar and that won’t effect the weight at all.

Removing chrome will strip a few grams but that’ll be compensated with tip weights rather than lead tape, especially on raw heads (my own opinion of course). Im using lead tape quite frequently but I prefer tip weights when dealing with raw heads

Got it. That's easy enough. I'm a novice when it comes to club building, as you can tell...

Sorry if this was already asked, but for those who have stripped a set of heads, how did you account for the change in swing weight? I don't see a lot of lead tape in the photos, so assuming you just accepted the difference in swing weight. Any issues there?

I weighed them all before hand, they all lost (z785) about 7-8 grams so we did 8g tip weights in all of them on the rebuild. I had a set once that lost 2-3 grams so I didnt bother with tip weights

Here are the iron blanks I’ve been grinding into shape. I was going to plum brown finish these but after running them through a tumbler the finish turned out so good I’m just going to leave them and try to keep rust in check by adding barricade rust preventer on a regular basis.

Question:  does anyone REGRET having their irons raw?  You'll lose some weight and that could make the subsequent build tricky but has anyone found that the feel is worse (blasphemy, I know)?  We all know how rechroming can potentially be detrimental to feel and I don't want to ruin a good set of irons.

Case in point:  I just picked up some MP-29 heads in 3-PW.  Here is a pic of the 7 iron (worst in the set):

IMG_1830.jpg.abeff10ef78f5dfcb8c05d660b91c19b.jpg

Significant wear mark on the face but the chrome is in good shape and very little bag chatter for an iron this age:  What do you think?  Worthy of getting stripped or leave them alone?  I wouldn't rechrome them and I would like to have a unique set but also wouldn't want to lose so much weight that I ruin a set of irons that have a lot of life left in them - decisions, decisions...

925549314_IMG_1831copy.jpg.236f4525ab74cd1271ce1456a2c636d4.jpg

Don’t know if you e sent these off yet or not, but the MP29s are the one set I would not have stripped. They have a layer of copper between the nickel and chrome that made them one of the softest feeling irons of all time.

I say that as a guy who loves Mizuno and played a set of raw MP33s until the grooves were gone and stripped his Honmas before he even hit them. Raw “feels” better/softer because the sound is more muted than the click of chrome and sound = feel which you can confirm by wearing headphones/ear plugs sometime when practicing. Muted sound = softer feel. Even Pinnacle range balls feel “softer” when you can’t hear the contact, IMO.

Here you go...full before and after on a set of Honma Rose Proto 4 - 10.

Before After

4 250g 245g

5 255g 253g

6 262g 253g

7 268g 265g

8 275g 270g

9 284g 280g

10 291g 286g

Obviously the weight loss on each head wasn't the same. The 5 iron only lost two grams while the 6 iron lost nine. Fortunately, I also measured the tip weights that were used when they were initially installed so I know what the total weights were assembled. When they came from the factory they were mostly in the D5 - D6 range, which I actually like, but to make sure they were consistent throughout the set when I reassembled, I went down to D3 since I couldn't find any tip weights that were more than 10g. If they feel too light when I hit them later this week I'll add lead tape to get them back up.

I'm a big believer that if I can't play good, I at least want my clubs to look good, so I went with some BB&F ferrules and let my nine year old son do the paint fill. I know the ferrules don't look as good as if many of y'all would have done it, but given that I only have a rag and acetone vice a 1" belt sander/polisher, it'll do since they eventually get beat up anyway.

I used gun blue on them like I did with my MP 33s many years ago because it hides the stage of orange rust between raw and the good brown oxide layer that develops over the course of a few months. In person it kind of looks like they were torched, but what's blue/black now will become a dark chocolate brown over time.

Current pics of same clubs after redoing the ferrules and paint fill in the summer of 2020.  They've sat in the garage since last spring due to a set of TR21Bs magically appearing on my porch one day from my buddy who had a great connection there.

Never cleaned the rust off of them, just dipped them in acetone to take out the "sunset" paint fill and then put the blue paint fill on them.

I never really did anything to them except wipe them off if they had a bunch of dirt on them to be honest.  Apparently my last round with them wasn't that great since I didn't even clean them before putting them in the garage.

Getting into a set of backup 745s. The wedge and 9 have a decent wear spot, potentially more so in the 9. Would these be a candidate for repair or raw? I'm going to start hoarding Srixons.

Did you by chance measure the CG of those blanks when you got them? I'm really wanting to do this and I'm curious where the CGs start at. Toe miss guy here and don't want to much work trying to move CG towards the middle/toe

I did actually and to start it was just slightly towards the heel. I took a lot off the toe to get my shape and then I worked the heel area pretty well to get the COG back to center. With less off the toe I think it would be easy to keep it center or slightly toe side. Here’s where mine finished

Brilliant.  Thanks! That should be manageable for me. Im thinking a bit longer blade but similar square toe.

I emailed TS, but they didn't have numbers for the initial CG location

A lot of what appears to be sweet spot wear or browning is just in the chrome, so yeah, stripping the chrome certainly helps.  You can also be more aggressive about sanding/filing/grinding out dings and gouges with a raw finish than with chrome.

Thanks - it sounds like playing with them as is, could be an option too... since they'll be a backup, I can think about it. That said - the raw idea really sounds interesting. And from all the pics here, it's really enticing.

That’s for sure!  Mine arrived at their shop two weeks ago today and it’s everything I can do not to send an email to ask on their status 😀

I think he might be backed up. Started chatting abt mid Jan. Estimated turn around time was 2 weeks. Sent them off and he confirmed arrival 9 Feb.

Emailed 22 Feb just to see if it started or had if there were any questions..

Sent another Mar 1 just asking if they've started

Finally got a response that they should be done today 4 Mar, and that I'd be notified through Pp...

His work stands for itself, but was kinda.. Not sure word but didn't enjoy the silence. Mostly because during the back and forth, emails were always returned within hours.

I have another project set on the bench that I planned on sending once this build was complete. But gonna see how this all shakes out.

Are these the Oichi blanks on the TS site? Your set looks awesome, love the unique heel shape! Curious how the feel / forgiveness is, and how much time you spent on the custom grinds? Think I may grab a set of these or the Kyoei blanks to mess around with.

I'm in the same boat. Sent mine in beginning of February and still hadn't heard anything even after emailing him. Ended up calling yesterday to make sure he even had them.

He knew my order and said he had gotten my emails but hadn't had time to respond. He also said he has gotten a lot of heads in recently, thanks to us I assume, and that he would get to them as soon as he could.

If you need an update then calling him is going to be the best way to get a response, but it is still going to take some patience. There is still a foot of snow here in Minnesota so I'm not in too much of a rush, but I'm still excited to see how they come out!
