Making my own Odyssey O-Works 7S Tank - Possible?

I really like the roll/feel of the microhinge insert and overall feel of the 38" Tank, but I've been putting with mostly a slant neck lately and really think it fits my stroke a little better with the added toe hang - the delimma being they don't make a 7S in the Tank version. Also, I like the slightly more compact head of the 7S, but have not seen any MOI numbers of the 2 heads, so not sure how much forgiveness I'd be giving up there?

 

I know the Tank version is 380 grams vs 350 grams in the 7S, so was toying with the idea of buying a 7S, extending it to 38", putting on the Tank Super Stroke Mid 2.0 with Countercore, and then adjusting the overall weight and swingweight with the weight kits available from Billy Bobs or Golfworks. Also not sure if there is different, heavier shaft that is used in the Tank models, or if it's just the counter balancing with the Countercore grip?

 

Does this seem like a good idea, or would lengthening the shaft much on the smaller head of the 7S really throw the swingweight and balance all out of whack? I can do the club work myself, so the cheaper cost of the 7S should outweigh the cost of the Super Stroke grip and weights if this would be doable as opposed to just biting the bullet and going with the normal Tank 7.

Bumping this back up to ask a new question rather than start a new topic.

 

With some help from some other members over in the Putter forum, I've determined that I'll need to replace the stock 10g sole weights with 25g ones to match the 7 Tank weight of 380g. .

 

The other issue I was facing was length. I was just going to add an extension, but someone pointed out that they think the Tank shaft is actually a heavier, stiffer shaft. This put me down the road of possibly trying an iron shaft, such as a C Taper X flex 140g shaft, but since this is a shaft-over-stem type of connection I'm unsure of the tip size needed, or if needs to be a flare tip?

 

If anyone has reshafted a 7S and knows the correct shaft tip diameter can you please share? I tried contacting Odyssey and Callaway earlier but they are apparently on Holiday break, and the guy I spoke to at Golfworks was unsure. I've done some Googling and see Odyssey normally uses .370, but not positive on over-the-stem models.

I did this with a scotty cameron squareback and I can tell you that the swingweight never even crossed my mind. Felt solid as a rock. I think you're definitely on the right path. I extended my squareback to 38", got the appropriate weight kit (to bring it to around 390g), and used a tourlock counterbalance weight in the butt end of the grip

 

I agree the shaft may be heavier in the tank, but I don't think stiffness will play a HUGE role. I imagine that would be a small change. I think focus on getting the headweight and counterweight working for you and see how it feels. I don't think you need to change the shaft, just extend it.

Thanks for the encouragement! Right after my last post I went ahead and ordered the 25g weights and KBS C Taper X flex parallel shaft from Golfworks, already received the SS Mid Slim 2.0 counter balance grip.

 

I couldn't find any info on the actual Tank shaft online, other than it is "heavier". I figured the 140g C Taper X would be a good place to start (if the hosel stem is actually .370 - we shall see). I was reading through the thread about the Breakthrough Golf Technologies shaft and concluded that one of it's biggest selling points is it's stiffness/resistance to twisting, so figured this shaft in X flex might be a cheaper alternative? Plus by switching to a new shaft/grip combo I can keep the original shaft/grip as-is in case this experiment goes awry and I want to put it back to original condition to re-sell.

If I'm not mistaken I think the tank shafts are just cut down belly putter shafts so they would be heavier.

Anyone who has an O Works do any paintfill removal? I've never had any success removing factory paintfill with acetone, usually end up using CitriStrip. Just wondering if anyone knows what type of finish they use on the O Works and if CitriStrip might do any damage? I like the red, but not sure how I feel about the white alignment aids - might be a little too busy?
