In a scramble we needed an eagle on the last hole (so we thought) to win, so I pulled a bunch of grass and “teed” my ball up on it so I could hit driver out of the rough. We made birdie and won, didn’t use my shot, but I still feel bad about it

Now 4 man scramble giggles? Never cheat always lose. It’s hilarous what people will do.

 

 

Played in decent cash one with old teammates, and there was another team of mates that were a decade younger than us. It was awesome. 22 and 23 under. We were at 22. another team was at 23 - of 4 fat heart patients (no offense). Think Bill Swerskys Superfans. Top 2 spots paid. We’re out.

 

In playoff for 1st place money - 2 of 4 of the super fans duffed it off box. They 4 man scrambled a bogey in playoff. The money lost was worth the laughs.

If you ever sandbagged, you cheated, every bit as bad as a guy who kicks the ball out from behind a tree or drops a ball out of his pocket, and if playing for money or prizes, if you won anything, you stole from other players just like someone who sneaks in someone's house and takes their wallet while they are sleeping.

Last day, last hole of a tourney. In a cart. My caddy is driving. We’re looking for my ball in the rough, back and forth, thick rough. We drive that area for 2 minutes then Get out and search for another minute. Finally find my ball, embedded, in a tire track through the rough. We weren’t the only cart looking for the ball. Tourney payed 32 spots and I knew I was right at the a** end of the payout.

 

I didn’t take a penalty, and instead I played it as it lied. Embedded. Ended up making double, and tied for 32nd place. Got $6 store credit.

 

I should have taken the penalty. It was most likely our cart. And to cheat just to finish in the money is sad. I probably would have made double anyway. No way of knowing though at the time.

 

Luckily, now in 2019, it’s no longer a penalty and I can finally forget about it. Moreover, it would have been a placed ball with no penalty. I may have made birdie if it was this year.

Unfortunately, cheating is rampant, at least with guys I've played with all my life, all for a dollar or two.

 

I've never played for any kind of tournament money, so I can't comment on that.

 

I won't compromise my integrity for a dollar or two. For millions, though, I'd at least think about it.

 

Yes, when I was younger, I'd "find" a lost ball or "in bounds."

 

Only a few times, but it WAS cheating. And I won't do it again.

The only things that come to mind are grounding my club in the rough and the ball wiggled a little, or trying to remove a loose impediment and the ball wiggled a little.

 

And, I wasn't going to sit there and try to determine if my ball "oscillated" or "moved" when zero advantage was gained. But, maybe it moved.

 

But, I've also done those things and called a penalty on myself.

 

One time in a tournament I had a ball move (1/16th of an inch?) in the rough and I stepped back and said to a guy right there, "I think it moved" and he was like, "whattyamean it moved? It's sitting right there", "well, it moved a little when I grounded my club." and I got a look from him like, "are you serious?" That's when you shrug and hit.

 

And, he was on the board of that club. And, it was a club where -- that story notwithstanding -- I felt like you could really trust people, and handicaps were good. Good club.

 

I'm not saying that's a grey area in the rules. It's not. If a ball moves, it moves. That was all a while ago, too. I've actually become much more careful about ANY action that could make a ball move and I don't remember the last time this has happened, and I think I'd call it on myself if it happened tomorrow.

 

One last thought. . .the amount of times I've seen people call this on themselves in my life (roughly zero) would indicate to me that I'm not the only one who has let it go before.

Nope. Never have. I’ve care penalties on myself several times . Heck. I don’t even like rounds where it’s lift clean and place. I will clean if it’s a mud ball during LCP , but otherwise I don’t touch the ball. I believe it’s bad juju to improve the lie every shot like guys will do during LCP.

 

 

True story. My first county am tournament 4 years ago I 4 putted a par 5 green I’d hit in 2. After the 4th putt which didn’t go in , I picked the ball up and threw it. lol. Stupid thing to do. I was new to the game and pissed.

 

Anyway. I replaced the ball and putted out . Then called for a rules official to help me know what to penalize myself. My 2 playing competitors begged me to just “ write down a 7 “. I couldn’t do it. I forget what the actual score was. I think it was a 9 with a warning of DQ if anything crazy happened again. Would have been deserved. I learned a lesson that day.

When I first started to play, it was more of a combination of not really knowing the rules coupled with “stretching” the rules a bit.

 

For example, i would always mark the ball on the green in front of the ball instead of behind the ball until my father in law had to correct me. More of an honest beginners mistake vs cheating.

 

Then because I didn’t think some of the rules were fair (stuck behind a tree, move ball, no penalty:), I was definitely NOT playing by the rules.

 

As time went on, I gained more respect for the game and the rules and starting to be more of a stickler for the rules.

I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

I play with my dad a lot who rationalizes his cheating with remarkable force and efficiency. It doesn't bother me until his member-guest when I have to watch my own partner like a hawk. It's really stressful and we miss the playoffs every year by a couple points. He will then blast people for sandbagging (rightly so) and lament the unfairness of it all. As I write this it occurs to me that it's no wonder I was drawn to a career in the law....
