Mizuno ST190/190G Review - Rick Shiels

bostonbrahmin

Recommended Posts

Shiels just posted his review of the new Mizuno driver.

In his testing, last years 180 models outperformed the new ones, but this years did not necessarily test bad. As someone who loves Mizuno and is very interested in the new ST190, has anyone hit both and found similar results? Also any thoughts on the review are welcome as well. Cheers

Yeah, was definitely surprised to see the ST190 didn't perform better than the ST180 for him given all the early chatter was that Mizuno had hit another gear.

Shiels reviews are typically useless which is why TXG is so refreshing. He doesn't use the same shaft or even specs in each review. He doesn't even try. Unless I am Rick Shiels and don't know it, his reviews serve literally no purpose other than seeing the club I want to try in action before I get a chance myself. It's basically just potential confirmation bias in video form.

Would have been far better comparison if he compared the ST180 & ST190 the same time.

Watch the video again. He specifically said he tested last years models with exactly the same shaft and set up.

I will watch TXG’s review and I’m betting they will blather on for twice as long and reach a similar conclusion.

His conclusion doesn’t surprise me. The 180ST is a low spin bomber. Lots of people just were really hung up on the blue and the fact it didn’t sound great.

Shiels is trying to optimize his channel with clickbait titles, double commercials and formulaic reviews with no personality or originality. I much much prefer and trust Crossfield when it comes to reviews. Crossfield is fair and objective and his swing is super consistent which is the important thing when reviewing clubs.

First we got THE driver with the cobra, then came the Ping ran out of ideas thing and now we get the most beautiful driver ever? I am so done with his clickbait titles.

Hahaha!! It’s Funny what bothers different people. I actually like all his recent titles.

.....and the 190 is the most beautiful driver ever made.

Yep, always great to see a guy chipping and putting while reviewing a driver.

About as expected, i game the st180 and its wonderful. I pretty much expected the same club in the 190 but more appeal to the masses(black instead of blue and a kinder sound) even so, it will be a winner- its price is much more reasonable. Mizuno never made ridiculous claims like some other companies. They just made a sexy looking club that performs AS WELL, at a lower price point.

I am not debating his success. I am simply fed up with this whole youtube clickbaity schtick in general. Not just Rick Shiels. I simply think it is embarassing if you habe to attract people with red arrows and sensasionalistic titles, instead of putting your focus on the quality and uniqueness of your content. The quality of mainstream youtube has declined massively in recent years.

His focus moved from trying to be informative, to trying to make money, long ago. Now all he cares about is the revenue he gets from the ads which plague his videos.

Rick is just a click bait mofo his dislike to the driver is that it’s gloss finish when 80% of the driver market is gloss finish and the driver that he is gaming ts3 which gloss finish I’m I not right. then he compared the st 180 which was ok to do but bet u he was warmed up when he hit the st 180 unlike new one.

Interesting viewpoint. So any review is a waste of time if the reviewer doesn’t use the exact shaft he actually plays golf with? I disagree.

....and thanks for the little insult thrown in there. I happen to think your boys are verbose and I find them irritating. Just an opinion. No need to be rude.

Yet... there you are... clicking away and paying attention to what he's doing.

Can't say it doesn't work though, can you? This is how social media works in case you weren't aware. Ever spent like... 5 seconds on Instragram? It's absolutely literally with clickbait.

I've completely tuned out RS and most reviewers. The only people I'll watch with actual interest is TXG and Mike Newton. Golf Box is okay but he tends to just say every club is incredible, and in general I don't get a ton out of it; I watch him more for entertainment.

Rick is all about making money and he will do anything/everything it takes to get clicks. Simple and easiest thing to do is unsub. I did... you can, too. Watch TXG and forget the rest.

I watched the TXG review of the ST190 this morning, it was about 7 minutes to their credit, which is about where their reviews should be, not 20-30 minutes. There just isn't that much to learn or know about any one club. On top of that, the dude with the accent continuously talks over the other guy... it has to be the most irritating thing about them I have seen so far. They may seem like they are doing things very differently, but they are not, maybe take away the clickbait titles, but they hit it and give the date like the rest of these guys. I also watched the review of the Tour Edge EXS where they had some other guy hitting it... they were almost trying to convince people it was a lower level driver which it most certainly is not. It is priced lower, yes, but the quality is for sure there with all these other offerings. They did that club no justice and seemed to have judged it solely based on price which is the opposite of what these reviewers should be doing. I'm glad you are impressed with those guys GolfChannel, but I just don't see what you see...

To be fair the numbers on the exs were a tad lower than the top end stuff. It wasnt huge but there was a noticble difference. To be honest i thought they did tour edge a favor as reccomending it as a budget driver. If it were me id opt for a previous years top end model over the exs. The TXG guys are great they go into incredible detail. They also really know their stuff and what they are doing. Their format may not be for everyone but as reviewers they are top notch.

LMFAO with this entire thread!

Agreed. IMO some of you are getting too personal - take what you want from the review, if you don't like or agree with it - move on. Why is there a need to insult his channel, his testing procedures, his ability to score in pro-ams (what does that have to do with a review?), etc...

And the same about the comments about TXG. If you don't like their reviews, no problem, move on, why insult the guys on the channel or judge how they present their material?

Not an attack at anyone, let's just keep it to the golf.

Now there is something strange in the business world.....Trying to make money.

Here's how it works

1. People see a flashy title, click, then watch the video

2. People like or dislike what they saw

3. Those who dislike are angry at themselves

4. They then take it out on Rick because it's his fault for them clicking on his free video's

5. Rinse and repeat the next free video review
