When you finally admit you are getting old !

So I wanted to buy a new driver to replace my beloved M2 with Tour AD. Swing changes had rendered the Tour AD a poor fit and my driver was 3 years old and i basically wanted a new one.

I went for a fitting wanting either a TS2 or 3 or M5 or Cobra.... By looks alone I decided on the Titleist. The cobra felt great but the TS2 was slightly better. The M5 was meh.

I tired all the fancy shafts. Thought I needed maybe a Diamana D+ or White Evenflow or whatever....

After a while I got the best results by Far with a Tensi Blue Shaft. 58G Stiff Shaft.

not a tour ad BB, not a diamana D+, not the TS3, not a 8.5 deg head.

A stock 10.5 deg off the rack driver on the stock setting A1.

My SS was down to 107 (Was at 114 at one point) and I didn't hit 300 yards once. Years ago I avg 295 off the tee.

Oh man I better work on the short game and putting.

p.s. The Ts2 is amazing. Looks and Feel are superb.

So, how old are you? When your swing speed slows from slightly over PGA average (114) to one comparable to, say, Matt Kuchar (108.6) it's hard to muster a great deal of pity. I'm hitting the gym in an effort to stay in contact with 100 . . .

true but I rip it every time. Just turned 40. I'm sure if the PGA tour guys ripped it they would get 5% More. My smooth swing is 100.

I'm still a few years younger than yourself but having been out injured for months now, I am genuinely worrying about the 8.5 degree TS3 with the Even Flow that I was fitted into just before I hurt myself. Might need to swing out of my boots to get it up in the air. How much are set of those superspeed trainer things again?!

I can sympathize. I'm closer to 50 than I want to admit and had cervical fusion about 5 years ago. I'm certainly trending towards some softer flex shafts than I'm used to. I don't see a lot of difference in results using the lighter, softer shafts but they just feel so much better. I'm actually noticing the distance loss more in my irons than my driver.

40. I understand your concerns, but I don't even remember 40. I think the key is to maintain flexibility. At 57 (58 soon), I'm still in the gym, but finding that the biggest factor for me was maintaining flexibility.

My wife is suggesting Yoga... but some of those positions are pretty difficult without farting. :taunt:

I just turned 40 as well and I’m playing some of the best, most consistent golf of my life. Finished league play with at scratch in one league and at a 2 in my other one.

Worrying about what shaft you have and how others perceive you based on your clubs is a waste of time. Kinda like going to the gym; you may think everyone is looking at you but in reality no one gives a $hit.

Well you guys are younger than me, I'm 61. I am in excellent physical shape and never get guessed for my age. Even with that my driver swing speed is down to 92 and I have tried every flex out there to see if I can pick up any lost distance. For whatever reason I still hit my Graphite Design Tour DI 6 the best. That won't stop me from trying others still looking for that extra 10 yards, still convinced there is something out there. Damn GOLF!!!!!!

Also going to take out the 2 / 3 irons and put the Hybrids back in. As bad as I hate the looks of them they are easier to hit.

LOL. I'm still long. I seldomly get out driven by my playing partners and If so it's by the 20 somethings and only a few yards.

I had a moment of depression last night after getting fit into a weak shaft. I slept on it and I'm ok now.

OP, were you fitted for the M2 with the Tour AD? And when you say that "years ago you averaged 295", how did you get that number? Same question with swing speed.

My reasons for asking this are probably obvious. And if you measured now against three years ago on a different device, the changes that you are describing aren't necessarily outside the margin of error. I'd add that going to a higher launch with more carry may have been more optimal for you all along.

Never admit defeat. You can pickup that 5 mph with a little work. The day I admit defeat is the day I stop playing. Period. I’ll never be the guy gauging the roll into a green. As god as my witness I’ll take up checkers and coupon clipping first.

I'm the opposite. When I first started golfing back in the mid 80's (I was 20 something) I'm not sure what my SS was but used a 3 wood for a 180 yard par 3. Now many years later I find my self closing in on age 56 & my SS according to simulator is on average about 104-108. If I'm swinging the club well with confidence I can reach 112- 116. (Fairly sore the next morning though)

When I was young I swung the club like an older guy. Now I'm an older guy swinging the club like a young punk. I figure by the time I'm 75 (god willing) I will be swinging driver about 125-130. LOL.

Turning 66 this year and probably struggling to reach 90 mph.

So I play senior tees when I can. The most important thing is that I still really enjoy the game, even playing with 8 or 9 clubs.

I'm 29. Carpal tunnel, hip surgeries, back tears....

I am now playing jumbomax and graphite. My swing speed for driving can fluctuate from 95-120+. My tee choices some rounds look like "simon says."

I'm 29.

Old is subjective lol. Put in the work, enjoy the game. Limp home. Rinse, repeat.

“Getting old” is 40 with a SS of 107? Just stop it.

It’s all relative. I know what he means. I’ll turn 40 this December. Try being the guy who blows the ball past 20 year olds. Then watch them learn the new launch tech and then see a 145 lb kid with 115 mph swing speed max out his specs with that speed and blow it by your “ old ways of hitting it “ with that same speed. It’s a bitter pill.

60 year olds gripe that 55 years olds have the advantage and so on. The op isn’t wrong. But I do agree he needs to realize 40 is just 40. Look at Phil. Work at it and you can keep or gain speed past 55 easy.

Ouch my aching toes.

I’ll have you to know I just practiced with my trusty old girls this morning. It sucks getting old. They say the alternative is worse. I’m not convinced yet. If a few key pieces of motivation weren’t in place I’m not sure I’d want to stay.

Let’s just say ignorance is bliss. Once you taste the atmosphere above the unwashed masses , it’s depressing to have to come back down. Sometimes I think it better to be born ignorant of that fact.
