Mastered wide back - narrow down - but ball starts further right...

This actually an interesting topic and I'm sure there will be many different opinions but I'm reminded of what Brian Manzella once wrote...

"When a teacher starts talking about width, either backswing or downswing, that's when I start reading MacRumors.

You either have it—Lindsay Gahm, Tom Watson

Or you don't—Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia

If you try to add width—Olazabal, Justin Leonard—you better RUN back to your old teacher."

Mastered having club wide back then narrow down through impact with lag. Ball starts more right. Started moving the ball up to reduce the right starting line.

Any other options people can come up with that reduces the right starting angle when lag is increased?

Thanks.

So you mastered it but it’s not working?

Former professional golfer. Current amateur human being.

Doing wide to narrow on purpose works .03% of the time.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

We had our weekly review with the coach again. Master is too strong of a word I agree. Can execute but still need to think about mechanics. Wide to narrow is speaking about club shaft. On way back perfect job not hinging too much and keeping the shaft wider away from body then the hinge increases during transition on its way down so the shaft is close to the shoulder (when arms are parallel with ground on way down the club head is over her head) and no cast from top nor dump at bottom. It's executed nicely with hands ahead of ball at impact. It's funny how internet people on the wrong side of scratch are saying this is incorrect mechanics. When done correctly the ball will start more right initially hence the post. When you increase your lag you do need to make an adjustment for the ball starting more right.

So you're saying there's a chance?

Just kidding of course but it does show the risk of chasing things that might cause harm rather than good in the swing.

Tell me what will work the other 99.97% of the time and we're golden. :)

No. Arms do not collapse or get pulled into body. Function of limiting hinge on the way back then during transition increasing hinge on your way down. Once understood it was fairly easy to accomplish but then again she is a plus 4. She was not a full blown caster. Before, on her way down when arms are parallel with ground her club head was vertical 90*. Now we just delay the hinge going back and increase it during transition and at that point the arms are extended away from body and when arms are parallel with ground the club head is still over her head versus being vertical straight up at 90*. Before her hands were level with the ball at impact and now they are leading with shaft lean handle drag.

If you purposely increase hinge on way down it’s extremely hard not to extend lead wrist and that’s why the club is open and ball going right. No one good extends lead wrist in transition.

It seems to be going a little more right than normal as a starting line before the draw because before at impact the hands were even with the ball and now the hands are ahead of the ball before impact. This position seems to make the face point a little more right until the ball is moved up a little. No?

If you don't know Lindsay Gahm, she was a college player student of Manzella's. She had a very wide release and Brian always believed this is fine and not something that can be fixed without ruining the player. Not everyone can achieve the late release perfect P6 position.

Interesting though that Manzella says this in a thread from back then:

I have taught here since she was 7.

I have tried everything that has EVER BEEN DISCUSSED on this forum or another on her golf swing.

This is it! This is HER golf swing!

I read that as saying that he tried to change her move, but was never successful and they stuck with the release pattern shown in the video above.

to me that looks like a cast then dump at the bottom. her hands almost look like they are just behind the ball when delivering into the club or at best just making it. was this being referenced as a model swing or different purpose?

Yes that's how I read it too. I'm sure Brian tried to get her to release later but was unsuccessful. She probably played less consistently with a later release. It changes your clubface control.

I think TGM classifies Gahm's release as a circle delivery path. Even though she has an early release there is still some forward shaft lean at impact and good extension of arms post impact. David Toms has a similar release. No doubt a later release is more preferable but is it suitable for everyone?

Definitely not being referenced as a swing model for everyone. The point is that not everyone can play consistently with a snap release. She tried but failed to make the changes. You either have a snap release or you don't. You can still play great golf with a sweepy release. That's coming from his experience as a teacher.
