Not sure what the most popular is...but of the 2 current makers of carbon steel

that I can think of , both use CS 11L17 ...no idea what that means...

It's a mild carbon steel with lead as a component. I'm not an engineer so I don't know if that's good or bad... MannKrafted uses 1018 and raw wedges are usually 8620. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The manufacturers I was referring to are Piretti and SeeMore . Both feel

softer , less clicky , than my older carbon steel Cameron's. I can

attribute the soft feel of the Piretti's due to the deeper face milling ,

but my SeeMore DB4x has a lightly milled face and is softer than Scotty's

The 11L has lead-slight amount but it aids in machining. My old production were 1018 because we felt it fusion welded better without the lead but ultimately we used the leaded.

8620 is a casting material. Cast wedges. Cheaper to make then a true forged head.

8620 is an alloy steel. Not just a casting material, can also be forged. Can be supplied in plate, round and bar shapes also. Contains Chromium, Nickel, and Molybdenum. Commonly used for gears, pinions, spline shafts, etc. Can be carburized for heat treat.
