Mascoutin - any comments?

Planning our trip to Wisconsin next year and came across Mascoutin as an interesting (and inexpensive) option but with very few reviews. The course has hosted the WI State Amateur so it must have some cred. Appreciate any comments from those who have played it. It featured as a Gem on another WRX column so wondering how it stacks up vs Lawsonia and SentryWorld for example.

Mascoutin is a great course and an excellent value. I try to get there every other year, but missed 2018. Fairly or unfairly it comes out as a bit of a "tweener." Lawsonia Links is simply a superb design with good conditions and a crap driving range. SentryWorld is owned by an insurance company (Sentry Insurance a PGA sponsor) and doesn't have to make money. I think the design of SentryWorld falls well short of Lawsonia Links, but the conditioning and aeshetics of the course are what you might expect of higher end country club. As a neighbor to both, and now Sand Valley, Mascoutin doesn't get the love it deserves.

How would you say mascoutin compares to lake arrowhead courses

I haven't played Arrowhead. I need a little more summer and a little less work to expand my horizons!

I've played "The Scoot" more times than I can count over the past 15 years. 3 9-hole layouts, white, red, blue. White and red are older and play like a traditional parkland courses with lots of mature trees sometimes on both sides of the fairway. Both are nice and always in good shape, but nothing that you haven't seen before. The Blue course is newer and really nice. Some really fun quirky holes with steep elevation changes, wide fairways, but plays more of a woodland course than a parkland course. Blue 9 holds up to any woodland course you'll see in Wisconsin, it's that cool.

 

Practice facilities are really nice, great range, chipping and putting green. Staff is super friendly and good brats at the turn. Very relaxed environment and pace of play is usually really good.

 

Price is a little high IMO. $74 with a cart isn't terrible, but I'd rather pay the extra $15 and play Lawsonia is that was the option. $90 to play 27 is a great deal though.

 

Overall, if you are in the area and looking for a slightly cheaper alternative to some of the more well known courses The Scoot is a great option. Definitely not a destination course, but a good choice if you are looking for a laid back day of golf to break up a serious golf trip.

I am doing a very similar trip, so in for some thoughts. Mascoutin and Lawsonia in a weekend should be a pretty affordable fun getaway

I'm not sure Mascoutin is a destination course, but if you are going to play Lawsonia (which I highly recommend to everyone) and are staying for a night or more and want to change things up, then yeah go play it. Ive played it now twice, Red and White are the original and Blue newer more modern nine. Condition has been really, really good both times. I liked it, and I like the blue the best, has a tiny bit more of a Linksys feel to it vs. the old school original 18.

Mascoutin sounds like a perfect fit to me - a bit under the radar and a definite lead up to Lawsonia and Sand Valley.

I really enjoyed Mascoutin the only time I played it (round two of a 54-holes-in-one-day marathon that started at Washington County and finished at Lawsonia Links). The Red course was alright. It was nothing special but it was very well conditioned and the greens, while not super quick, were very smooth and had no ball marks on them. The Blue course, on the other hand, was really cool. It's a Rick Jacobsen design that he did in 1999. As Zer0 said, there's elevation change, some blind shots, a nice mix of variety on the par 4's, and it doesn't feel like the other nines there. The walk from the Red ninth hole to the Blue first was long but the $36 walking rate is an excellent value for the quality of the course.
