I wouldn’t call it a sleeper course. It’s not a good course but it does have fast and difficult greens. It’s also very tight! Not a fun place to play if you are crooked or unable to control your shots into greens.

I call it a sleeper course because over the years ive seen a lot of guys walking in talking 67 and leaving with 76. Growing up there taught me how to control my driver, but I used to hit 6-8 knock down 2 irons there per round when playing for score in the 90's and early 2000's. I dont know that id say its not a good course, but i could be blinded by my youth and growing up there. Its not a long or grand championship course, but on a property that size I defy you to build a better golf course.

Lipstick on a pig doesn’t make it a good course. I am told the conditioning is much better these days than years back.

I would call it a strategic course but one I wouldn’t want to play daily or ever again. Just my opinion though.

It wasn’t a bad round vs how the course played. I didn’t enjoy hitting wedges onto the front of greens and having them not hold.

I did not know that NJSGA E-Club doesn’t get you Met status. Can you join the MGA e-club if you wanted Met status?

Got so busy at work Monday I said, I’ll take care of it tomorrow. Realized at 10 pm I’d missed the deadline. What a moron. Only thing worse would have been paying the $175 and forgetting my tee time.

Good luck out there

@gioguy21 i decided last minute to throw my hat in the ring for state open at essex. You ever played it before, or have any tips to share? I tried for state am at quail brook earlier this year and missed by 2 (bogeyed my last two holes and was greenside in two on the par 5 17th..) but on the bright side that opened up some PTO so I can play state open. You ever play glenwood before? Definitely a strategic golf course, but if you keep your head on straight you'll have an advantage on the field. A lot of guys get frustrated very easily at that place with its polarizing layout

I've played Essex. It will be a bit of a shootout for the medalist spot bc it's a short course and honestly a ton of wedges into greens.

I played Glenwood going back a few years when I first started competitive golf. Thankfully I'm a considerably better golfer in mind and skill than I was back then. I remember the greens were tricky but you could see your reads relatively easy. I know it's the kinda course u have to plot your way around on...so, that too is good for my game. Cant wait.

At Essex just know that being on the green in reg is just as important as missing it below the hole.

Based on your length, I would say you can hit driver on more holes than most people if you can shape the ball on the front (Draws on 4 & 8 and a cut on 5). Doing this at Glenwood in my opinion should lower your score. You MUST take advantage of 12 & 14 both are reachable Par 5’s.

My inability to close out a round strikes again. I was +3 after 14 and shot 81 after taking an 8️on 15.

Spun my approach off the false front, chip came back to my feet after landing it on the false front, bladed my next one over the green chipped on and 3 putted after missing a 2 foot putt because I rushed. Other than 15, I played pretty well for never seeing that place. I still would have missed the cut at -1 but it would have been a good showing IMO.

I did enjoy Crestmont and I hope to play there again. Great tips gioguy21 off the tee. I took note of all of that and only got myself in trouble once on 12 because we waited 10+ minutes to tee off. I looked at my notes from you and totally forgot it by the time I hit and went left off the tee. Made bogey.

Wow Gio, is that you at 73 today? Sweet playing! How’d they have it set up? I saw the tee markers and pins set up last night and seemed pretty fair and a few tees moved up, probably for pace of play and trying to get around 6700.

Some names on that scoreboard who have been around a long time and know the place inside and out and who struggled. Gives me something to play toward next year since I know I can shoot low 70s there, but also know there’s a big difference when it’s tournament time.

Yessir - posted a 73. Went out in 39, in in 34. I honestly had birdie looks all day but the greens were slow by tourney standards. One bad drive at 18 (my 9th hole) and I turned the focus on to play strong coming into the house.

I think the blast of heat heading into the tournament spooked them. A week earlier they looked good albeit slow. But Sunday afternoon there was definitely signs of distress. That's a great job to turn it on. What was happening on 8? I see some monster scores there just skimming through. Even a ball in the water off the tee would leave a wedge to the green. Not sure why I see so many "others." I see it ranked No. 6, which surprised me a lot. No 2 and 18 makes sense as the two hardest but 8 doesn't really have enough trouble or length. Also surprised to see not a single eagle on 14. Was it playing into a strong headwind? 475 should have made it reachable for most of the field.

i started on the back 9...when i played 18, i had to hit a draw and it was the second time i pulled driver all day; got under plane and flipped it into the woods. hit 3w, then a 7i to about 10' and lipped my bogey putt for a double. on 16 (par 4 with the water on the left) i had wind in the face and the tree was 284y off the tee. i hit a straight shot at the tree, hit the tree and kicked it left into the water. just shook my head and did everything i could to make a bogey at worst.

That's a great bogey out of there on 16. Threading it into that corner is a nice bold play, sounds like a bad break. Did you play pretty conservative off the tee? Sounds like it if you only hit driver twice on your front 9. I assume 14 and 18? It's really not a driver course. I'd guess even on your back 9 you only hit one or two, and even then it would have been some real corner cutting.
