The Golfing Wilbury's

So if you haven't watched the show Billions,there is this classic scene, in which they reference pop culture and music, the Traveling Wilbury's. So what is a Wilbury? The Traveling Wilbury's were of course a band with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne. However as explained by Wags in this clip it takes a combination of wit, cool and credibility to be a Wilbury. So who are the Golfing Wilbury's?

 

Arnie has to be on the list, he's a Wilbury...maybe the king of the Wilbury's.

Seve is a Wilbury, but Bernhard Langer probably is NOT.

Gotta go with Jimmy Demaret, Walter Hagen,

Kuchar is definitely NOT a Wilbury.

Jack probably isn't, he is a great golfer, maybe the best, but not a Wilbury.

Gary Player=NOT

Hogan is a Wilbury, but Byron Nelson while a great human was probably not.

A Wilbury is quiet cool and uber-talent. Freddie Couples is the original Wilbury. Put Els with him. Maybe Henrik Stenson and Steve Stricker, too. Younger Wilbury's include Speith and JT. I'd add Finau.

By the given definition, if you're a d!ck, you can't be a Wilbury. That leaves out Hogan, Tiger and Phil for sure. Byron Nelson would be a Wilbury. Crenshaw, but not Kite. Duvall, Stricker. Spieth, but not Reed. I could go on.

Note that a "wilbury" is slang for some kind of glitch in the recording studio.

The guys in the band are/were all definitely cool...

So what golfers would fit the wilbury/glitch group?

The story I heard was that the name came from what record producers often said about mistakes in recording,"We'll bury it in the mix." What's your story?

 

 

BTW, Finau, Spieth, JT Wilbury's? Not yet. Maybe someday. Snead a Wibury? Too much of a word not allowed in real life. Lee Trevino? A Wilbury.

hogen wasn't a jackass so much as he was an obsessively driven competitor ... so that leaves him out ... i think sarazen would be the 'orbison' of the group ... italian, cheerful and one of the foundations of the game, to an extent ... and he invented the sand wedge, which is bonus points ... champagne tony lema would be a good choice for the lynne/petty role ... i like the suggestion of charlie sifford for the other lynne/petty role ... dylan's role would probably be arnie, with petty filled by trevino or demaret ...

Given the Axe/Wags definition, the list has to begin with Arnie. Seve was internationally cool. Phil is included on the basis of the recently spoken story of Owen/Phil at Spieth’s wedding (I won 90,000 of these ($100 bill) yesterday; take this and go f*** yourself). Lastly...how about a different name: Butch Harmon.

This thread is kind of hinting at guys on the Champions Tour (or old enough to be on Champions Tour) who still have enough talent to play the regular tour. To that end, I'm liking Couples, Jimenez, Stricker, Vijay, and DLIII.

MAJ is probably the only non-major winner I could put on the list. Freddy, depends on who you talk to....

Yeah, he was. He went out of his way to make people feel small and uncomfortable. I love his game, his swing and everything he did in golf. But he was a weird guy.
