Putting Question....

I have a buddy who is one of the better putters I have ever played with - Pro or Am. He has asked me a few times over the last couple years something that I never really considered until he mentioned it: "What hand are you taking the putter BACK with?"

 

It's been amazingly helpful to me over the last year or so. Whenever green speeds change from round to round (going from one course at 8.5 and then the next at 12.5, for instance), that has helped me with speed control. The faster the green, the more I want to feel like I'm taking the putter BACK with my left (top) hand. When I feel like I'm taking it away with my right, I don't putt well on fast greens. He reminded me of this the other day and ... INSTANT fix for my putting. I got into some bad habits on slower, punched greens over the last few months. I feel like I'm now primed for a good season of putting.

I found the same that when I initiate with my left index finger which is flat to putter grip gives me steady back stroke of putting. need my other fingers to hold grip tight not to wobble the putter head.

I think I feel it more in the shoulders than the hands. The slower greens I feel more in the right shoulder/arm

I don't even think about any of that.

If greens are slow I have a faster back stroke and through stroke. Use this for uphill putts.

If greens are fast i have a slower back stroke and through stroke. Use this for downhill.

 

I take a putt or two and I know what tempo my stroke will be. I willadjust accordingly during the round.

Putting is 90% mental and 10% psychological so if what you're doing is working, don't change.

This is a big part of what I worked on when I went to see David Orr. It's basically alright to take it back with your lead hand/arm, but you better also take it thru with your lead hand/arm. If you go lead arm back and trail arm thru...you're cooked.

 

My stroke was more designed to use both hands/arms in sync. I would use primarily my left hand back and my right arm thru. Now I have a cue that _feels_ like I'm using all right hand going back, but it's really more both hands working in concert. When I use too much left hand, the path goes too far left.
