Random Bandon Thread

Quick question- will be at Bandon in May for the first time.  We are playing 9 rounds in 6 days I think.  I've battled some lower back issues in recent years off and on along with some tightness in the hips/glutes/psoas.  I had a torn labrum tear repaired in my right hip about 16 years ago now as well after years of ice hockey.  I was considering trying to wear some sort of compression short to help with soreness/tightness/recovery.  Do any of you guys do this?  I normally just wear boxer briefs for underwear and will use KT Tape if need be.  If anyone has any other tips I'd appreciate it!   Thx!

It just seems like you're asking for re-injury with that schedule.  Why not just make sure you play each course once, and cut back on your schedule.  If you were a MLB pitcher they'd have you on a pitch count and outings count with an injury history.

With caddies I'm hoping I'll be ok.  It hasn't been anything debilitating just gets really tight and sore sometimes (not always).  So was just looking to do some things ahead of time to try to mitigate.  The schedule is set and what the rest of the group wants so can't alter now.

I'd leave it as is anyways, can't comment on any compression boxers but sounds like a good idea. You can always back out of an afternoon replay round if you're starting to feel it.

@pearls24 All I ever wear is compression shorts for underwear. I don’t think they will do anything at all to help soreness, tightness, or recovery but I think they’re far more comfortable. Helps to prevent chaffing and when you’re tucking in your shirt the underwear doesn’t bunch up.

You gotta make sure you’re training and building up your stamina prior to your trip. Work on mobility in joints like ankles, hips, thoracic spine and shoulders. Stability in joints like knees low back. Mobility and recovery pre and post rounds. Push cart over carrying. If you find your ball is in a sketchy lie or stance is funky, just move it and decrease risk of additional injury. 
 

Invest in hyperice heat and massagers. There is a gym in the bottom floor of main clubhouse.

There is also a sauna/jacuzzi downstairs in the Lodge.  Make it your second home.  Also on-site massage is available.

 

I would also advise making the second round of each day optional, based on how you're feeling.  Better to miss a couple afternoon rounds in order to make it to the end of the week.

I joked with my buddy, for our trip back in May I'm going to need a small duffel just for all my gear like this. Hyperice back pad, Theragun, Amazon knock off brand leg sleeves, cups for the shoulder/back...

 

Completely unrelated but I cant recommend the Fit For Golf app enough. Its got everything from full blown long workouts every day that you can do in the gym to 5-10 minute dumbbell workouts (what I'm doing) to stretches and flexibility routines.

Thx guys. I'm in really good shape overall so I hope I didn't mislead in my original post.  I just struggle with some tightness in the lower back/hips if I've been sitting too long or from walking a lot and playing if I don't take care of myself with hot tub, stretching, KT Tape, etc.  I was fine in Ireland last May but we only played 18 per day.  We will have caddies for all rounds and I did book a massage already.  I do plan to use the hot tub and stuff in the gym a lot!  I was just more curious if you guys wear compression shorts of some kind to help with this type of stuff.  No chance the 2nd rounds will be optional and I don't plan on missing any.  Obviously if someone is really hurt then it is what it is but we have 8 guys with matches and stuff setup for the week.  We are so pumped to experience Bandon for the first time.

Sounds like you'll be fine. If you find compression shorts comfortable, wear em. But I wouldn't say they're necessary. The courses are mostly a pretty easy walk. Just be as fit as you can going in, and ibuprofen will get you the rest of the way there.

Looks like they are testing stadium lighting and keeping the Punchbowl open into the night.  This would be a welcome addition to the resort, although I am sure it could get a bit "sloppy" out there depending on the crowd.

Saw that post on Instagram as well. Looks like a pretty good time and kind of seems like a no brainer to have it lit up. Definitely run the risk of things getting a bit "sloppy" out there, but could help free up some dinner reservations

We have officially hit the one month away from our trip down the coast to Bandon. Going to be a long 30 days of praying for solid weather! We got 12 going down and will be an exhausting but incredible week:

Tuesday - Leave Seattle and play Gearhart, sleep in Newport

Wednesday - Bandon Crossings mid morning, head to resort for Preserve in the afternoon

Thursday - First group out at Bandon, followed by Old Mac in the afternoon and Shorty's in the evening

Friday - First group out at Pacific, followed by Trails in the afternoon

Saturday - First group out at Sheep, followed by Old Mac in the afternoon

Sunday - Bandon in the AM and start the drive back to Seattle

I will say, as someone that was never going to take daylight hours to do this when you could be playing actual golf - this might be the only time I'd see the Punchbowl.

Just going to throw this on this thread as well.  Looking to do a reservation swap with someone that has a trip in July-September.  Currently booked for October 15th-19th but unable to make those dates.

Heading down tomorrow (into a possible Howler wind event), and my phone is smoking from all the chatter amongst the guys.

 

I'll drop some condition reports into the Current Conditions thread as we go along.  They've gotten a ton of rain in the past week, so I'm trying to keep the expectations realistic.

Tomorrow is supposed to be rainy and gusts to 55!! If you can get out in that you are a hero. Pictures and videos!

Yeah, we'll see how it goes.  We're off on BD at 2 PM.  I'm always up for a little circus golf, but may back that down to 9 holes if it's too heinous.  Weather supposed to slowly improve as we get through the weekend, but I've been there enough times when the forecast was dire and it turns out just fine.

We're all rooting for you! Cameras this afternoon looked interesting.  We need good reports on how you fared.

BD this afternoon, and the course cams do not do justice to the savage weather today.  No pics or videos, as the wind was howling (30+ sustained and 40+ gusts) and the rain was sideways like  icepicks in the side of our faces.  One of the worst weather days I've ever been out in.  Teed off at 2, and by the turn, the greens were inundated with water. If this were not the first day of a four-night trip, I would have stayed in the bar.

 

Forecasts improve slowly over the week, and by Sunday it should be pretty nice. Trails and Sheep tomorrow.  Trails should be ok; we'll see how it looks for the afternoon, as Sheep is the most exposed course and not fun when the weather is like it was today.

I played in that same weather at Pacific Dunes. 7 brave souls ventured onto the course that day, only one finished. I guess I was the bravest of souls. My caddie wanted to quit on the 16th tee box but when I told him I would carry he manned up and finished the job. It was a major storm and that night the power went out at the lodge and the adjacent buildings for several hours.

Trails today.  Weather was slightly better, rain wasn't driving like yesterday but steady.  Trails has more protection from wind, so it only really affected the holes that were either elevated or open.

 

Greens were surprisingly fast, considering, and in fairly decent shape.  The resort has gotten a sh*t-ton of rain over the last couple weeks.  Yesterday there were rivers on the greens, today they were just starting to pool a little near the end of the round.  Many bunkers that were small water hazards.  PD tomorrow.

 

Looking for steady improvements as we get further in the week, and next week looks spectacular.  Too bad I'll be home...

Are the course conditions starting to resemble last season when they had struggles? Or not that bad yet?
