Plus size golf grips, let's discuss!!

Plus size grips seems to be yet another new trend in golf equipment. As I understand, the better players use to add 4 wraps on the bottom hand to help with a hook? Now, it's added for you in the plus grips. What are the advantages for a high capper and a scratch golfer? Anything new feels weird. Is it worth sticking with it? I am digging the new Lamkin Crossline Plus dark gray grip. It looks and feels great. Just a little big and different too.

I've tried a number of oversize grip options and tape combos. The most recent were oversize Crosslines. Didn't much care for those. Crossline midsize with two full wraps of tape seem to fill my wheelhouse.

Thanks, Azgreg. Good to know. I was hoping to hear from Wrx'ers who have tried and stayed with products like MCCPlus 4, which I would consider different than a mid size grip. It has no or much less taper than a standard or even mid sized grip.

I do a reduced taper grip using tape on my hybrids and irons (SS TX1s) and my wedges (Tour Wrap 2G). They’re built up to midsize with 4 wraps at the bottom. I also use reduced taper grips on my woods (formerly Winn Excel, now Golf Pride CP2 wraps). Felt a little off at first, but the biggest benefits I’ve found have been maintaining a lighter grip pressure is easier, and not turning over too soon and keeping the wrists out of it. I’m never going back to tapered grips.

Been using the NDMC MIDSIZE PLUS 4's since they came out. Fit my hands perfectly and helps me keep the grip pressure relaxed and light.

I just had the Tour Velvet Midsize Plus 4s added to my clubs. Coming from Tour Velvet Midsize +2 wraps bottom. I enjoy how they fill my relatively big hands more. As @SEP1006 said before, grip pressure is more relaxed and light. As a high-capper, I force myself to draw the ball by having a stronger top hand grip and a more underhanded lower grip. And I'm usually pretty successful and consistent doing so these days. I've never felt that having more of a tapered grip made that easier. Especially considering all the clubs I test that have standard grips with no wraps at all in stores. These Plus 4s are just more comfortable. No extra wraps underneath for me.

I switched to regular midsize tour velvets this year to try to help with some elbow pain. Hasn’t helped the pain much but i do like the bigger grips. I wasn’t a fan of the plus 4 grips. I like the taper, old dog and new tricks....

I Buy a lot of 2nd hand clubs . I use whatever comes on them . Midsize , 3-4 wraps, standard. Makes no difference really.

However the majority of my clubs have GP CP2 pros standard.

UTx midsize with a couple extra wraps on the lower half for me.

 

I don't have the biggest hands, but this combo feels really comfortable to me.

Sorry I wasn't clear. A couple of the tape combos I tried involving extra wraps under the bottom hand in an effort to curtail my hook. Didn't help me and I found I prefer just 2 full wraps of tape.

i've had everse tabpe bid up onder jumbo velvets for ages. will make my life easier if they do jumbo plus 4's soon.

What's the purpose or advantages of the extra wraps? It appears mainly to keep the grip pressure lighter?

The purpose is to optimize grip diameter to your hands. Assuming your technique/fundamentals are correct, properly sized grip will limit calluses/blisters and even out glove wear at the same time improve feel and touch. Also not all shafts have same butt diameter and profile, so wraps are used to build up to a standard, if there are different shaft butts in the set.

damn, how drunk was i when i typed that? it should read "reverse taper build up under jumbo velvets" lol.

the reason is it just feels better. have long fingers and interlock grip. if i don't build up the bottom hand fingers will touch the meaty part below my thumb.

I don't use grip tape but I have switched to Winn +1/16" grips and find that it helps two things: I have lighter grip pressure and it softens the impact on my sore arthritic hands.

I do the Howard Jones +4 technique, but go to the end of the shaft with my first layer vs leaving an inch. I just feel like I have more control of the club when it's a bit thicker, and I am less wristy at impact.

Played the Lamkin Plus grips (extra wraps built in to the bottom hand). It was great on my heaven wood. It took the flip out of the swing. But, I tried it on my 5 iron and it was not as good. I guess it works on certain clubs. I like it for the wedge and now woods. Will play standard in-between.

Im like you OP... Just feels weird!!! I recently put the Golf Pride Tour velvet plus 4 grips on everything in the bag and im still not sure hoe i feel about them. Ive always done my own club repair and regripping and have tried prettu much everything with the exception of some of the newer lamkin stuff. The 4 xtra wraps built in to the "plus 4" grips is a nice feature. Im not quite a mid-size guy, but def am gettung uze to the plus r grips. It seems to take a little bit of my right hand "slog" out of my golf swing and helps me from the dreaded left shot! Ive been a plus hdc for most of my life and a loyal tour velvet guy for about the last w0 years and really like the plus 4. If your tendancy is to come over the top and pull shots....i would def give it a try!!!
