I know it's a little bit out of Fort Worth but was wanting to check to see if anyone has played Squaw Valley down in Glen Rose recently like either this Spring or last Fall.

We usually go out there in the Fall for a few days but I've seen a report on another site that didn't exactly give them a good report regarding course conditions. So I just wanted to check before we start planning our trip out there this Fall. Thanks.

I've played out there several times this year, most recently at the end of March and the conditions were great. i played the lakes back in March walking and it was good conditions as usual. Played the links back in January and the fairways were still brown from winter but i remember the greens being green and rolling very true that day.

Played sky creek ranch yesterday. The greens have been punched recently but are coming in nicely. They rolled really true IMO (23 putts on the day it's easy to say that). It was my first time playing the course, but i really enjoyed it. There are some holes where you need to know where the hazards are located and know some lay up distances. I think not knowing the course probably cost me 3 strokes on the day, but overall i would definitely go back out there to play again. It was a slow round at 5 hours, but that was kind of expected on the holiday.

I’ve played it a few times, if you can get through the first 6 holes unscathed you can post a number out there.

Okay, thanks. I will be there Monday, Tuesday and a bit on Wed. I need to spend most of that time with my folks. So I wont have any time to play. I moved away after college (34 years ago) and didnt take up golf until I moved to Houston. So don't know the Ft Worth golf scene.

Where are some of the better practice facilities. I may be able to get away to practice a bit.

My parents live on the far south side, hear 20 and 35. I always see this course in Burleson off 35.

When I was a kid growing up, I used to live not too far from the old Glen Garden CC. I know its been converted to a sort of private facility and closed already (sad, would love to have played there, in the footsteps of Hogan and Nelson). And my dad used to have a shop 2 blocks away from Sycamore Park.

Anyway, I checked maps and both Texas Star and Sky Creek is only about 30-35 min from my folks. I also used to work at NE Mall in college.

I forgot about that place, I had it on my list of places to check out. Will definitely go there and check it out.

That's the same location for Artisan Golf, right?

Next door...previously was Nike’s The Oven. Leonard is a great place to practice. Huge grass hitting area, good putting and chipping greens.

The course in Burleson was closed for a while for a course renovation. I only played there once, before they did all that.

Okay, thanks, I hope Artisan is closed when I'm around there. I cant spend any more on golf!!!! Im sure if I go in there, money is going to flow.

I am really disappointed, because I had guys travel from out of town to visit after I was raving at all of the courses we have here and how great they are. Needless to say I shoved my foot in my mouth. I even had them on Tier 1 Club Corp courses and they were shocked. All guys from NY.

The Woodlands CC courses are not in very good shape, with the exception of the Tournament Course as they have $100k higher budget than the others due to the Champions Tour Insperity Tournament. Our dues have increased a minimum of 4% per year but the golf maintenance budget has not. The Golf Course Superintendent's know what needs to be done but they are handcuffed by Management at Corporate in Dallas. They keep the cups in the same location for 3 days prior to moving them and don't mow the greens daily so the green speeds average about 8-9 on the stimp. Also they purchased the cheapest golf carts they could buy and ours after less than 3 years are falling apart, broken windshields, steering that doesnt work, carts breaking down on the golf course, flat tires etc. Recently one of the courses didnt have enough carts for play on a Saturday as 17 of the 50 carts were broken down.

Private equity owned clubs are notorious for cutting corners and trying to maximize profits. Give me equity ownership or give thee none of my cash. Life is too short to play on horrible golf courses.

I can see that argument for sure. Curious which one you recommend?

I could be wrong, but i don't think you can just go into Artisan's golf shop. It's not like a retail location, but more of an artists studio in which you need to make an appointment for a fitting. Good news is that your money is safe, but the bad news is you don't get to see the craftsmanship up close and personal. Also, another spot to check out for golf in Fort Worth is Rockwood Golf Course just North of downtown. They did a pretty big renovation there about a year or so ago and when I played a few weeks ago I was pleasantly surprised by how much it has been improved. The greens are still pretty firm but overall it is pretty nice and of course the price is right since it's a Municipal course.

So Southern Oaks opened back up? That's good I suppose. Last time i played there it was in poor condition and the round took over 5 hours. Wasn't long after that they shut the doors unexpectedly leaving many employees unemployed right around the holidays. Sounds like I need to get back over there to play it again.

It’s under new management and it’s spectacular.

Thanks for the heads up. Been a couple years since I played Whitestone also. Never had a problem with that course (except hole #10). Just got burnt out on it from playing it too much.

I did get to go over there and hit some balls on Tuesday morning. I didn't take my clubs, but they will let you use any of the demo clubs they have. They had a very nice selections. The range balls all looked new. That is on impressive facility. I wish we had something like it in Houston.

Also, there were some people at Artisan getting what looked like a wedge fitting. I love the "Hazardous" signs around the Artisan test area!!

Here are the costs to join and monthly dues according to the March, 2019 edition of Avid Golfer magazine. They do note that some of these are estimated. Also some of these may have a set Cart Program fee that is in additional to the monthly. For example, where I'm a member at, we pay an additional $85 month for unlimited cart usage for the entire family. Hell of a deal when the wife plays as mine does.

Bent Tree Country Club $50,000 / $545

Brookhollow Golf Club $125,000 / $900

Colonial Country Club $60,000 / $600

Dallas Country Club $150,000 / $750

Dallas National Golf Club $150,000 / $1,300

Denton Country Club $15,000 / $455

Hurricane Creek Country Club (I'm a member here) $2,000 / $295

Lakewood Country Club $75,000 / $605

Mira Vista Country Club $ $40,000 / $613

Northwood Club $135,000 / $725

Ridglea Country Club $15,000 / $497

Rivercrest Country Club $60,000 / $600

Rolling Hills Country $2,500 / $320

Royal Oaks Country Club $80,000 / $878

Shady Oaks Country Club $80,000 / $890
