Diff. between 9.5 degree driver adjusted to 10.5 degree, vs. 10.5 degree head (and vice versa) (TS3)

Hi there. I’m looking at the TS3 driver and being that I’ve never had an adjustable driver, I’m curious to learn if adjusting a 9.5 degree head to 10.5 degrees is the same as playing a 10.5 degree head.

 

I’m looking at the Titleist TS3, and the loft angle can be adjusted in increments of 0.75 degrees. So I can make a 9.5 degree head to 10.25 degrees, or make a 10.5 degree head to 9.75 degrees. Assuming the .25 degree difference is irrelevant, would adjusting the 9.5 degree head be the same as playing the 10.5 degree head?

 

The reason I’m asking is because I’m looking to demo the driver on the course and some places only have one head available.

When you add loft to the head you close the face. When you reduce loft, you open the face.

The TS3 allows you to adjust loft and lie angle independently. Would the face still close if I add loft without tweaking the lie angle?

So if I adjust the loft to 10.5, but hit it with a square face, am I back to a true 9.5 degree loft?

No, it’s 10.5° when you square it. Go look at the Wishon post about adjustable drivers stickied in this sub-forum.

If I understood how adjusting the clubhead for loft works (and I could be wrong and will be corrected)...the club has a static 9.5*. When you add loft by adjusting the head...you've essentially closed the head so its at a static 9.5* at the closed position. When you swing the club and bring it square at impact...you'll have to open the face which essentially adds loft bringing you to the 10.5* loft you've made the adjustment for. Make sense?

 

Honestly...it's why I've never messed with loft adjustments on woods. My main goal is to keep a fairly neutral position at address...I don't like the thought of a more open or closed face to get a specific loft...adds more variables to the swing than I need. If I need more loft...I'll go buy a more lofted head. Adjustable drivers have been more of a help with me switching out shafts easily than anything else.

Exactly correct. Loft change is only applied if the clubface is returned to square at impact. If one prefers to let the club rest on the ground and have the angle at which it rests govern how they grip the club, then the face angle change will typically be applied.

A bit of free advice: If you want the launch properties of a 10.5, then buy the 10.5 head and use the hosel adjustments to tweak dispersion without regard to what is or is not happening to loft. You'll be a lot happier and get a lot better results than you are likely to by hoping that a lower loft head will launch higher and straighter with a different hosel setting.
