Thanks and praise to the USGA on "Golf's Longest Day"!

I just returned from a glorious day at Scioto, watching world class golf on a world class golf course on a gorgeous day, with no gallery ropes, in the qualifier for our national championship... for free.

Scioto is in as good shape as I have ever seen it, going back to the Senior Open of a couple years ago. It's been a wet spring in Ohio but they have had a few nice days to air out the best courses. Pace of play is not too bad (one group fell into a 17-minute delay and was a problem), and the Scioto greens are rolling beautifully.

Prices for food and beverage on Scioto's spectacular back porch are Augusta-like. The Scioto staff could not be more welcoming.

This is the sort of thing -- and occurring every year, although not always at Scioto -- that the PGA and the Tour would never sponsor for free. I cannot say enough nice things about the memberships and leadership at Scioto and Brookside for their generosity in offering up their facilities on these days. I was not at Brookside today but I've been there for a half-dozen previous qualifiers. I'd challenge anyone to name a better golf-spectator opportunity than a US Open qualifier at Scioto on a gorgeous day.

Kudos to Scioto, Brookside, the OGA, all the volunteers and especially the USGA.

I also just returned from Scioto. The course is in fabulous shape. The weather was perfect. The rough is about half as long as at the Memorial, but the greens were perfect. We were following Pat Perez for a good bit and he chewed on some USGA officials asses about the slow play (a nearly direct quote "it's f****** ridiculous" and they "should do something for a change" - there were four groups on no. 12 - two on the tee, one in the fairway and one on the green and there was a group a few holes ahead that was 1 1/2 holes behind (I didn't see who it was). He was not happy about the pace of play. The players, including Pat Perez, were mostly very friendly considering how accessible to the gallery they were due to the lack of any ropes. The Scioto staffers were great given that they club is usually closed on Mondays. I hope they use Scioto again - it was more enjoyable than the Memorial since it is so up close and personal.

And this was free. Free parking. No ropes. Walk with the players (within limits of etiquette). Remind me how does one easily get tickets to the Masters, and at what price?

It's funny that you mention the Masters, since I had that on my mind when I originally posted that even the refreshment prices at Scioto were almost Augusta-like.

He must have had enough. 71 and a WD. -1 is currently T30th at just over the halfway mark.

If Pat had been more knowledgeable, he'd have found out that it was Jonas Blixt's group, and that there were Marshals involved. Every other Marshal on the course who had communications even knew of the timing of the delay (17 minutes, as I quoted in my OP) and of the efforts to keep play moving. I say "Jonas Blixt's group" because he's the only guy who I knew in that group. I have no information that it was Jonas. It could well have been somebody else.

Pat's been at the Columbus Sectional many times. He knows how it goes. I think he likes for the locals to know that he's Pat Perez, tour star. I was there when he turned in his card at Scioto. The other quarter of the field (morning at Scioto, starting on #10) had no problems.

I'm not sure it was Pat's job to be "more knowledgeable" - the two USGA guys he was talking to didn't offer any information or response at all, they just stood there looking a bit dumbfounded. Pat is clearly one of the fasted players on the tour - which was a pleasure to watch, frankly. But I think that may have just been some attempted venting by him - like I said before, he was friendly towards us and his playing partners.

Asking because I do not know...what does the PGA tour charge to watch Q school? Parking prices? I do not recall seeing ropes when watching on TV but certainly could be incorrect.

Right. But I was comparing to the us open. It isn’t free or cheap or Augusta.

No need to start an argument. I’m sure this afternoon was lovely. But if anybody let people on the course free it was the course ownership / membership.

It is the standard term for hosting this event. The Scioto membership are extraordinarily generous, as a USGA-member club, to participate in the qualifier. But it is run by the USGA and they direct these terms. Same at Brookside. Same all over the U.S. as far as I know.

Because it's Monday and I could not spend all day watching golf. What I like to do is walk the entire course in about 2 hours with stops to watch certain groups; chat with some of the officials; talk to some of the Scioto staff, maybe head over to Brookside for an evening drink on their beautiful patio behind their 18th green near the scoring.

Oh, and I like watching very good players on the practice tee. That is where I try to visualize tempo. It's an enormous challenge for an event like this, to have a facility that serves all the players. Scioto is magnificent. Even with just 18 holes, it ranks among many of the best major venues for its amenities.

I was amazed watching what I could of The Memorial that there wasnt any delays, at least that I saw. You all must of got lucky dodging storms cause down here along the Ohio River we were dodging storms all weekend.

Ive played with some guys that have made it deep into US Open qualifying years ago and still cant get over the slow play.

I've always liked Pat Perez and have often wondered if he could host a show ala David Feherty. I'm serious. The guy is pretty funny.

On another note, gratuitious pics of Pat and the caucasian Pat (aka Charlie).

It's threesomes, off two tees, to play 36 holes in a day. Something that the PGA Tour almost never has to contend with.

As for rain, I was amazed while driving down how flooded Northern Ohio was. There was rain forecast for Dublin/Columbus over the weekend and you are right; they got very lucky.

While I have no doubt that was a nice day, praise for manner a US Open qualifier was run by a poster with a USGA avatar is bound to generate a bit of skepticism regarding any potential bias or association.

And for good reason. It was unfair. I'm sincerely glad you had a tremendous day walking with the players, and sincerely wondered whether you were able to ask your questions of them. Sorry if I took your previous comments re: interviewing players seriously if you weren't serious.

Well that’s a bit of semantics at best. I’d say the root of the permission tree lies with the membership. USga isn’t doing anything that wasn’t voted for and approved. But I suppose it’s a moot point.

But I will say this. Some of this Scioto and Brookside talk reminds me why I’m so sore that they killed the Publinks championship. The average USga member not only cant get on either of those places. But most have never heard of them. Myself being one of them. Sure I paid the google bill this month. So I can look them up. But still , losing that event was a shame and a mistake.

You're not sincere at all. You're trolling me with these posts and you know it. I was completely serious about a challenge to the Tour players who had criticized the USGA about Rules specifics. At the time, it was specifically Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas. Neither of whom were in the Columbus qualifier.

I'd be happy to have a serious fight with you about the USGA; someplace where there are no moderators.

My apologies, I suppose, for being interested in whether you interviewed tour players like you said you wanted to, without remembering the exact specifics. I’m not sure what to say about the (physical?) threat.

It sounds like Pat was questioning them so there was your opportunity. An opportunity missed it seems.
