Quick Dry Grip installation.. Tour Van method??

giogolf

Recommended Posts

Hey WXR's.. so when I install a grip with traditional Mineral Spirits and Double sided tape I usually have to wait at least 8 hours before its dry and I feel that its firmed up enough to play.. Sometimes i want to test things out and do quick install.. Is there a special ways the tour vans are doing it that I am unaware of to get a grip on and immediately hit the range?

**I know the blow on technique is instant.. but I dont want to do that..**

I see the TM Tour Van guys using liquid and tape and then handing them off to the players to go play..

What am i missing?

When I use traditional double sided tape and mineral spirits - I only have to wait about 15-20 minutes. That's really more the norm. I can't even imagine what it might take to do it in a way that would need 8 hours - maybe the water based tape and 'spirits'? Can't think of any other reasons why it might be different for you - unless you've chosen a combination of shafts and grip that is inherently very loose (e.g. grip with a core size bigger than the actual butt diameter).

Only thing I can really add is that heat can speed up the evaporation process of the spirits although since the grip itself acts as an insulator - it's not easy to apply heat after. Maybe heating up the shaft before you put on the tape - of course that also means less working time to get the grip on so you'd have to be quick.

I use naphtha (Zippo fluid) and the regular Golfworks tape. There are a few kinds of grips that really seal off the solvent to keep it from evaporating. Winn grips for instance.

A real rubber Golf Pride or Lamkin traditional grip is more likely to set up while I'm still wanting to tweak the alignment than it is to be loose half an hour later.

So here is the only thing I can think.. My store bought Home Depot Mineral Spirits is different in some way or old..

When I was a club builder in GolfSmith we used to tell our customers wait a few hours..

The other thing is, I maybe sensitive to the mushy feel of a fresh grip.. With the products Im using.. Im sure if I tried to pull the grip off after 30 minutes it won move, but as i grip it and squeeze it in my fingers i feel the movement.. Im going to go buy some new mineral spirits and see if it drys quicker..

I only use GolfPride grips for my self so nothing special there

This is what I am thinking. The stuff I used back in the day at GolfSmith was pungent and seems much stronger than what i used over the years

A couple squirts in the grip then use the butt drip hole to drible over the tape and slip them on.. very little waste.. Im thinking its the odorless stuff or maybe mine is just old

I had been using odorless mineral spirits for years with no problem. Then recently when doing installations the grips would be very difficult to slip on all the way. I could get them on but with tremendous effort. I think the formula may have been changed as I went and got a second can of mineral spirits. Same problem. I then started using the green label grip solvent from Golfworks (and Golf Galaxy) and the grips slide on so easy I could probably do it one-handed. Plus it says dry and ready for use in an hour. It also has a nice citrus smell like Simple Green.

I dont use solvent/2 side tape for any of my clubs, but if I do build them for others I do. In that case I blow out the excess solvent with my compressor, drys very fast then

I use lighter fluid and good 2 side tape. In the roll not the precut junk. ready in 5 minutes. Dries quick.

There are a few subtle differences between paint thinner and mineral spirits for the purposes of this discussion. Paint thinner is mineral spirits but less refined. Mineral spirits are more refined. Therefore it will smell less as the Benzene and Toluene are removed. It's also going to dry a little bit quicker than paint thinner.

Naphtha is an even more refined form of mineral spirits. It dries much more quickly.

Just as a general side note for your brush cleaning and other cleaning projects needing paint thinner:

Beware of paint thinner substitutes that are marketed as more environmentally friendly, because they are often thinned down to lower VOC's, and exponentially less effective. Not cost effective either.
