Best ball 2 shots

Anyone ever done this to get use to shooting lower? I played two shots and took the better one, although most tee shots I just took one shot because it was so windy and links style course made it possible to lose too many golf balls. Course was playing very difficult with high wind and really thick rough from all the rain we’ve had, hack out of rough stuff.

 

Anyway, ended up with 8 birdies and two bogies for a 65. Made me feel kinda how a pro would shoot low. What really helped was having another shot with scoring clubs into the wind and crosswinds to see how it reacted so I could get close to pins, also 2 putts helped a bunch. Those are the two areas it really helped. I suggest try it if you are stuck at a certain score. You will learn what to practice.

Great way to play 9 by yourself when course is slow. Also will do the opposite and play the poorer shot of the two or play match play with each ball against the other.

Yea I’ve heard of Tiger playing two ball worse shot in his practices with Haney. That would be interesting

I did this quite a few times last year. Generally when playing by myself on my home track when busy. It is the only time I have managed to shoot par for the round. Where I find it helps the most, is giving an extra approach shot, and for those times you miss the green. The extra approach shot is huge, give me 2 opportunities to hit the green from 180yds and in, and I am probably going to get on, or really close. Then for those times when I get really close, the extra chip really helps get the speed on the chip, so I make sure to get up and down.

I do it a lot over the winter. If I hit one in the fairway, and one OB, I'll play the one in fairway laying 3.

 

I've probably played a couple hundred holes doing this and I've made 1 legit birdie. I had to make back to back 15 footers on a par 4.

 

It's definitely an exercise in thinking about where not to miss and learning to control your golf ball. It keeps you focused. Like if you miss a green, you know you're putting the worst of your two chips so you better focus because you're not making back to back 12 footers. I think that it's a good exercise for learning how to grind out pars. It's not a game for learning to be aggressive (IMO, "patience" is a better virtue than "aggression" for a golfer anyway).

 

The main negative about playing worst ball is that you can putt too defensively. For instance, if you miss the first putt, there's no incentive to make the second putt. If you play this game in a match, you should play so that any "make" counts without proving it.

 

It's a very difficult game. Bogey is a good score. Making a par usually means making back to back 3 footers, because 3 feet was the best you could do from 40 feet because 40 feet was the best you could do from 135 from the rough because 135 from the rough was the best you could do from the tee. Every bad shot propagates its way through the hole.
