Weekend Trip from Northern VA

Alright so I'm looking for a good weekend trip to do. I'd leave Friday evening from NoVA and leave Sunday late afternoon to get back. I did Bethpage last year, and going back is an option for sure. I'm also considering a mini-Pinehurst trip as well. I'm open to pretty much everything, just want to play some good golf! Thanks in advance!

I'd look at either Charlottesville or Williamsburg VA as both are a lot closer to NoVA. Williamsburg has some great courses - Golden Horseshoe Gold and Green are both excellent and very different from one another, Kings Mill is a great course, and there are a bunch of others in the Williamsburg area. Cville has Old Trail out in Crozet which is one of my favorite golf courses, super nice layout, beautiful views, challenging but fair. Then you also have Birdwood which is UVA's home course, and a really nice mountain course as well. The best part of both Wburg and Cville is that you're just 2ish hours from NoVa.

Lots of options depending on how far you want to drive (closest to furthest):

 

1. MD - Ocean City/Bay Area courses - meh but close; I have limited experience in traveling here for a getaway but have played a couple of courses. Bulle Rock is awesome but it is out of the way.

2. Bedford Springs, PA - awesome resort and course. Way under rated and no one seams to know about this place.

3. Charlottesville - good to great golf (depending on if you have access to private clubs) plus awesome non golf activities (breweries/wineries/history). The top three courses in the area are private (Farmington CC, Spring Creek, and Keswick), however Spring Creek is public on weekdays and has a couple of public tee times on weekends (hard to get), while Keswick allows play if staying at the resort (the resort is awesome btw). I also concur that Old Trail is very fun as are the Wintergreen Courses. Unfortunately, Birdwood is currently being completely redone (completely new layout by Davis Love to allow for a UVA team practice facility) and Keswick Resort is closed for refurbishment (you may still be able to get on the course if you call; probably a definite if your are a member of a another club)

4. Williamsburg - very good - King’s Mill, Golden Horseshoe, Royal New Kent (assuming it is reopened), all good.

5. Homestead - great golf (2x courses) and nice resort (I loved the Homestead pre Omni changes). IMO I like the Old Course more than the famous Cascades course although the Cascades is usually in better shape and seeing trout in the streams and ponds on the course is awesome (I also love fly fishing) - The Cascades just isn’t a $295 per play course (especially for multiple rounds) IMO.

6. Greenbrier - haven’t yet been (probably next trip); supposed to be an awesome resort with good golf - Old White, Greenbrier (only partially open), and Oakhurst (play with rental hickories!).

7. Primland - awesome resort (IMo one of the nicest in the entire country) and golf course plus a telescope built into the hotel!; bonus points to play VT Dye River Course and Ballyhack (limited stay and play packages - note Ballyhack is probably a top 5 course for me anywhere) on the way down.

8. Nemecolin Woodlands Resort & Mystic stock Golf Course; haven’t been but heard good things and plus it is close to Falling Water.

9. Pinehurst - stay onsite (great resort) plus golf Mecca - No. 2, 4, 8 with free replays on the other courses. Plus lots of other great golf in the area.

I recently had a weekend in Wintergreen for a wedding, and managed to play both courses. Good golf, and prices were fairly moderate.

Did you play Devils Knob, Wintergreen’s “Private Course?” Devils Knob is a blast and one of my favorite “quirky” - as in you miss the fairway by 5 yards and your ball falls down a 500 yrd. cliff - courses. Love that the temperature is so much cooler too during the hot season.

We did, managed to be first off the tee on the morning of the wedding. This was in late April, so it was pretty dang cool for a while, windy too, but still a lot of fun.

Looking to do a weekend trip in October from nova. Have done Williamsburg and not looking to do the resort as they get too expensive. Is there anything on the PA side? Looking into Charlottesville also, how is the golf there in October?

Charlottesville has a pretty good offering of courses. Here's another idea for you......have you considered Ocean City, MD? Great courses out there; in mid-late October you'll be outside peak season and should be able to find some good rates.

Early October is one of best seasons for golf in and around the Charlottesville area. The main problem is that two of the good public options are closed - Birdwood (UVA’s course) is still being remodeled and Keswick is only open to member play because the hotel is closed for renovation.
