Ruffled Feathers tomorrow. Anyone played it recently?

Circling back on highest rated public course question, I think I have combed through every list and I have only found five courses with a rating of 75.0 or higher. Oak Grove, Stonewall, TPC Deere Run, George Dunne and Cog Hill. Hopefully I did not miss any. Fyi in case anyone was wondering...

At one point Village Links was over 75. Not sure if they've been re-rated in the last 5 years but it was up there.

We're playing Rich Harvest next week and if I recall correctly, it's rated over 79 and I believe max sloped at 155, too. Erin Hills, which is basically suburban Chicago is 79.8.

Yep, Village links is barely under...74.9. Rich Harvest is definitely out, it is private. Erin Hills is close to us but obviously not IL. Once you go into the 74's there are tons of public courses, but very few 75.0 and above.

I played the front 9 a week ago. It was in pretty good shape. I might actually sneak out there tomorrow evening to take advantage of the “membership”. For what it’s worth - they don’t have the back tees in place - I guess they’re trying to maintain a reasonable pace of play and discourage the weekend warriors from “tipping it out”.

White Hawk CC in Crown Point, IN has a rating of 76 for the Red/Silver combo, 76.3 for the Black/Silver combo, and 76.2 for the Grey/Silver combo. It’s not in IL but Crown Point is a Chicago suburb/exburb.

Anyone been out to Orchard Valley lately? Thinking of getting out on Thursday / Friday but was curious if it was in good shape or not.

Not sure if anyone else experiences this, but I always find it interesting. Whenever friends who aren't as addicted to golf as me suggest playing, they always want to play White Pines. There're so many better options for $50 than that place.

Country Lakes in Naperville was known for a comparable event in the early 2000's. This was a great line from a Tribune article: "A Naperville golf course that held an outing that involved scantily clad strippers has surrendered its liquor license, city officials said Thursday."

 

Not that I've been in many gentlemen's clubs in the past 40 years but aren't the strippers generally scantily clad?

Had a high school match there in the mid 90s there with a said outing booked before our afternoon 9 hole round. Outing was in the mid to finishing stages as we got there, so the attendees and ladies were pretty liquored up. Was an eye opening afternoon.

Course I worked at in Southern Illinois outside of St Louis called Gateway National (awesome course, top 10 public in Illinois in my opinion), had a Larry Flynt's scramble every year and it was insane. The first hole is viewable from the street, the rest is away from everything. Basically the only rule was girls had to be clothed on the first hole. There was a long street leading into the club and someone would be positioned there with a radio to basically give a heads up if police or anyone that wasn't supposed to be there showed up. I think they stopped doing it a few years ago.

Beautiful (cool) morning at Sunset Valley. A bit breezy, but very playable. Conditions were excellent tee to green. The bunkers were a bit wet, and could use a little more sand in places. Greens where awesome. 'Probably the fastest ones I've played in the area this season, rolling at least 11. Sweet. Unfortunately there were waaaay too many unrepaired ballmarks. FFS. How difficult is it to bend over and fix a ballmark? Heck, it doesn't even have to be yours. There are plenty to choose from. Pace was excellent at 3:40.

What a simply dreadful round. I felt, and swore I heard, a pop in my left knee on the 2nd teeshot. It was pretty much downhill from there. I almost walked off after nine holes, but figured I could get some value out of the remaining holes. I think hit 5 fairways, as most shots were going low and left as I struggled to get my weight to my left side. Hybrids and fairway woods weren't much better. At least my putter worked. Oy. I did manage one good hole, reaching the par 5 12's green in two after a nice downwind drive and 7 wood. 'Burned the edge on the eagle putt. Otherwise it was blech.

Still can't stand the opening hole there. I hit a hybrid and still managed to put it in the water left. With the tailwind you pretty much had to hit an 8 iron or less to take the water out of play. Pfffttt.

I normally sit out on Wednesdays, but I have an early afternoon appointment near Oak Lawn tomorrow. So, I decided to scratch another course of my list by visiting Stony Creek in the morning. After today's debacle, a pitch and putt might be what the doctor ordered.

Teed off at 7:10 and finished 9 in almost complete darkness at 8:35. Last 3 holes were definitely a challenge. Finally had a decent day - 3-under through 6, only to bogey 7&8 and finished with an up and down for par. I’ll take 1-under (even if it’s only 9 holes) any day.

I don't like that tree on the left. My 7-iron caught the top of it and flipped into the water.

Yeah, it’s an easier but longer shot from the right fairway. I carried the bunkers but had an iffy lie in the rough. What was supposed to be a punch layup 6i right/short of the green, turned into a “slight” pull that carried the greenside bunker and landed on the green. Almost made an eagle, but can’t complain about a tap-in birdie.

those greens were lightning fast last weekend. pins positions were tricky too. we had a super fun round.

Going to get out Friday AM and wanted to get out on a new to me track. Thoughts on Randall Oaks vs Blackberry Oaks on which one is more "worthwhile"?

Have played both often and Randall Oaks is far and away a better test of golf. Although the rating/slopes are somewhat comparable, there are a couple of wonky holes on BBO, the range is lacking while Randall has a nice range and a great short game area. Think you'd enjoy Randall more personally.

Stonewall tomorrow afternoon. Already dreading hole 5, curious how others play that hole and what you hit? I literally do not have a club for that hole and don't feel like buying a new club for one hole in Chicagoland. I can't get there with a 3i and 3w would go over so I am sure I will make another pathetic attempt to hit an 80% 3w which never ends well for me.

Driver that cuts the center bunkers on the right. 5 or 6 iron right of the green just left of the tree through the fairway, slope almost always carries it all the way to the green. 2 putt birdie. There aren't many holes in my life that I can say I know I am under par for my career but 6 at RF is one of them. That 2nd shot can be 30 yards short/right of the green and still end up on the putting surface.
