Figured out why so many courses are lacking sufficient sand in bunkers.  It's city championship season and people are sandbagging like usual.  In the Naperville city championship, the person who won the C flight, basically the 4th level, carries an 11.3 index per the CDGA, with his most recent 20 rounds having only 5 rounds under 85,  with nothing in the 70's, he managed to shoot a 77 and 79 to finish with a net score of -11 and win by 10 shots.

Isn't it amazing that someone can play that well for 2 consecutive rounds at just the right moment?

Sounds like an ELITE net player.

Ridiculous, should immediately be disqualified. The odds of him posting those scores back to back in competition are around 300,000:1 (I think, I've never been great at math)

Are these results posted anywhere?

Here's a link to the live scoring, although it has some errors.  https://www.livetourney.com/event/30218?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2o50JkFd5Hntx44f-XpVxt62EFsVCY3-OIKS-7Q2EHYmIfjhAWNYhfimI_aem_TfgCzM4R6Loyymus_-dUyA

It's time for my annual rave on how they run these events in Naperville. The last time I played in the Naperville Sr. Championship, I shot a net -4 and lost by TWENTY TWO FREAKING SHOTS. The guy who won hadn't posted a round under 90 all year and yet somehow managed to shoot 73/74 over his two rounds. That's probably 10 years ago and it still irks me to this day.

not just that, but play that well in two tournament rounds which are usually higher pressure and tougher to do well in.

An 11 could easily shoot a 77 on Naper, but not a chance going back to back.    A few years ago somebody in the E flight put up a score in the mid 70s.  I don't get it,  what's the point of cheating to win the c flight?     This event has had issues for a while now,  part of the reason I stopped playing in it.

I was part of putting this event on many moons ago,  and almost no care or checking went into the handicaps.   They just wanted the money.   I imagine these days it's 1000x worse.

Possible yes.. Easily no. Course handicap is between and 10 and 11 so probably still getting 11. 6 under his handicap in a competition is basically 1 in 600.

Agreed.  Even at 1-600 odds, it would be extremely difficult for someone to do that.  I just looked, I have 2 rounds out of my last 61 at 77 or better and I am currently a 6.5 handicap.  For an 11 handicap, that would be the round of their life.

I worked there for a decade, I've seen a handful of crazy things like that, including my old man who was a bogey golfer shoot a 79,  his one and only round under 80.   I don't buy this guy's situation as legit, but if an 11 is going to go low anywhere, that's the course.

I stopped playing net events after my buddy and I caught a sandbagger red-handed, and the CDGA failed to take any action after we presented the evidence to them. We were playing in the 10 - 13 bracket, and after paying our entry fees we were out there getting our clocks cleaned shooting mid 80 rounds. This cheat won several tournaments with scores in the low and mid 70s. He only had a handful of mid 80 rounds in the system, but with a little digging we discovered that this club instructor was playing on the Golfweek amateur tour.

He had won a couple of events, and had a couple of other top 5 finishes with rounds in the low to mid 70s. Not a single one of his tournament rounds was in the CDGA system. We captured the screenshots of his GWAT scores, and sent them to the CDGA. Didn't hear a word from them. You catch a sandbagger red-handed, and you don't get squat. No stripping him of his trophies. No ban from further competition. Nada. Decided that I didn't want to give the CDGA another dime if they were going to condone cheating.

Not amazing at all. Some people pay more attention and are more focused when it's important to them.

More often(?) others can't take the pressure and fold.

And those scores, given that you didn't give us any course ratings, slopes or distances he played from may not be all that unusual. An easy/quick estimate and he may have "only" been 3 & 5 shots better than his 'cap.

Very good, and a bit unusual to be sure, but far from "impossible". Pope has it about 258:1. 51683a_0e4c802994044cde8b5c4a3441464da0~

I don’t bother with club championships. But I got a 36 hole green light so I took a day trip to SW Michigan to play Beeches and Whittaker Woods. Beeches was great, though I love that course so I’m admittedly biased. A few bunkers were washed out and they always have some standing water in spots from the overnight sprinklers soaking low spots but it’s a great prairie style layout, the sand waste areas are huge and offer a design feature we don’t get in Chicago, it was very lush, and the greens were outstanding. They had been freshly rolled so 10’s felt like 11’s on the Stimp. Yes, a few are too carny with multiple buried elephants and they’re absurdly gigantic. I had a 120 foot putt on 6 that was a guaranteed three putt. But greens like that make approach shots a lot more strategic. The tips at Beeches is a lot of course. Probably too much for me. I really only sniffed a few birdie looks but was very happy with a 39-38 77.

There are some real pros to Whittaker Woods. It was $80 to ride but $40 to walk. Yes please. The layout is outstanding and the par 3’s are all picturesque. However, the conditioning is horrible. Dead grass everywhere, especially on the front and completely wrecked tee boxes. The back was in moderately better shape (looked a little like Oak Grove’s turf on 10-18) but the front…oof. Listen, for $40 I’m not complaining too much, but they have the gall to charge most customers $80 on weekdays and $110 on weekends. It looks like they completely lost the front last year during the drought and haven’t started re-seeding. I get it; the whole place is built on sand and needs to be watered constantly. An extended drought is terrible for a place like that. However, the dead turf should all be re-seeded or sodded and marked as ground under repair. Just brutal. I played there with my dad in 1998, shortly after it opened. Back then, it had the excuse of still needing to grow in. Now, they’ve just given up. Anyway, I hit the ball well on the front but got hosed on some approaches that didn’t hold the green and left me with impossible downhill chips. I also lost a couple balls en route to a 40. However, I birdied 10 and parred out on 11-18 to shoot a 75.

Lol....a $40 cart fee....sheesh.  a no brainier to walk!

Highest cart rates I’ve seen this year are:

1. Whittaker Woods ($40 to walk; $80 to ride)

2. Glen Erin ($37 to walk; $72 to ride)

3. Mascoutin ($49 to walk; $65 to ride)

tie

4. Angel’s Crossing ($44 to walk; $69 to ride)

5. Cedar Chase ($25 to walk; $50 to ride)

It’s funny, the cost to walk has gone up a little this year. $3-$10 at most places. So roughly 5-12%. But the cost to ride has gone way up. Anywhere from 10-20% at some courses. The cart fee was always high at Glen Erin but I never saw this type of discrepancy at other courses. Yet I see more carts and less walkers. When we played Mascoutin this year, we got out ahead of two groups because they ran out of carts. This seems crazy to me.

Chicago area peeps, trying to get a database going on great local places to get a casual bite to eat near golf courses.   What are your recommendations?  Here are a few of mine.

Heritage Oaks:  Once Upon a Grill is right up the street.  Also, Blue Fish sushi is pretty close by.

George Dunn:  Hog Wild is right up the street, must visit for the pork chop and while you are there ride the tram from the parking lot to the front door.

Glencoe:   Honey Butter Fried Chicken just opened a location in downtown Glencoe

White Deer Run:  Dos Amigos mexican restaurant is up the street on Milwaukee.  Good mexican for the northern suburbs

A favorite of mine, and I would consider it an easy walk.  The rates have went from ~sub 40, to over 50, to what they are now ~75.  I won't pay it.  How long before it's a c note🤔.  A few ways to get around it, walking being one....37 is a good value considering!

They don’t advertise the walking rate so all you see is $72. But it’s still crazy cheap if you walk. I agree. It’s not a hard walk. About 6.5 miles.

Oak Grove: Billy’s in Spring Grove. There’s nothing in Harvard (except the methadone clinic of course) but Billy’s is the closest decent non-fast food option. Great beef sandwich and beef sausage combo.

Cog Hill/Ruffled Feathers: Mama D’s. Kind of a greasy spoon. Always hits the spot after a round, especially during Spring and Fall.

Went to Steeplechase in Mundelein Sunday, and over to Franks for the Memories after for wings and a beef sandwich. Not going to wow you from the outside, but those are usually my favorite types of places.

If I was playing at Harborside or any south suburban course, I'd often stop at one of the south side BBQ joints just off the Dan Ryan. Alice's on 43rd was a solid choice, but there are plenty of others. Chicago's No Sauce Boss, Honey 1, Lem's, and Sunny's were worth a visit.

Top Notch Beef burgers on 95th in Beverly is an institution. If you're playing anything off of I-57 it's definitely worth a detour. The patty melt was heavenly.

... When I first moved to Chicago in '78 and living downtown so I could walk to WEFM, I had a small ski boat on Diamond Lake. Gale Street Inn is right there and enjoyed them often. After 2 years the slip and winter storage was more expensive than my boat payments and I sold it but we still traveled up to Gales Street at least once a year.

Thanks for posting the WW stuff LD.  We're scheduled to play it in 2 weeks and thinking it's time to swap courses.  That's so sad on a really nice track.

Wow, wow, wow.  Whittaker is the anchor course on our annual Michigan trip next month so we will have to swap it out.  That is brutal.  It was NOTHING like that last year, too bad.

Libertyville - Mundelein area , Wildberries at Buckley (Rte 137) and Milwaukee. nice general menu.

if you play north along the lakefront , hit Big Ed's BBQ in Waukegan.  Belvidere Rd near 43, by the WalMart.

absolutely LOVE LOVE Big Ed's.  Been going there since they were in the shack in North Chicago.    Burnt ends and peach cobbler....yes please!  His wife makes all the desserts and Ed does all the Q.  The Dream Team!

Arg you're a lot more courageous than me.  When I drive the Dan Ryan the last thing I'm looking to do is get off at an exit.

For those who live in the city, when you play any of the South Suburban courses, go to Burger Point at State and Archer. Best burgers in the city. And that’s saying something given the options we have.
