Brighton Dale Blue Spruce and Stonehenge today with Bear. The forecast didn’t mention windy conditions. LIES. ALL LIES. The front was overcast but the sun came out on the back nine at BDale and stayed through the second round. The first couple greens were still recovering from the winter. They were kind of thin and splotchy. The rest of the greens were fine though. The bunker renovation on Blue that’s scheduled for the Fall can’t come soon enough. The sand traps are just a mud, clay and rock combo. And it’s extra frustrating given how good the bunkers on White look. I played pretty well. Made two long birdie putts on 1 and 15 and only had 4 bogies for my third straight 74.

Days like today are why I joined Stonehenge. It’s tough to beat playing a late morning to early afternoon round in 3:20 for $35. The course was very dry, which was a pleasant surprise. With the wind coming out of the North the first hole was tough but most of the lengthy holes were downwind. They added sand to all the bunkers and the rough actually exists now. It’s not super penal but it’s also not the one cut that it was earlier in the season. If I shot another 74 I was gonna be annoyed. Instead I shot even with a birdie on 9.

I think we may have been a few holes ahead of you if you played Brighton Dale early.  The bunkers are absolutely awful and I was in them 5 times on Saturday so would know better than most.   Not even sand, more like a slurry kind of wet concrete consistency.   A birdie on 15 into the wind is a nice score.   Getting a bit tired of the 40 degree morning golf so it would be nice if the temps would bump up a bit soon.   What did you think of the redone chipping area and new driving range?  Looks to be coming in nicely.   I've heard good things about the refresh they did on the red 9 as well.

TPC Deere Run kicked my arse once again…. Or shall I say - I kicked my own behind…. Hard to have a good scoring day when you top your drive off the first tee (double),  lose at least couple balls in the fescue and forest (couple more doubles), get a fried egg up against a lip  on a short par 3 (triple) and… don’t make a putt longer than 5’.  By far my worst driving day this year, which is not really saying much, since it was only my third round😂.  Wrong course to have a 80% chance of a double cross.  Otherwise, it was a fantastic day😅.  Weather cooperated, and the sweatshirt came off at the end of the round.  Only gripe were the greens - they were punched about 3 weeks ago and still pretty bumpy.  Got a $70 replay, which we used to do a little 2v2 scramble match play.  Little sore from 36, but I’ll survive😂.  Next round - Ruffled Feathers this coming Friday.

On 15 I played the traditional driver-5 iron layup short of the water-5 wood-1 putt. Hard hole. Was thrilled with the result. The range looks great. Since I’m coming in from the city for a 6:15 tee time I don’t have time to hit balls. However, in the past the range was really hemmed in. Glad they opened things up a little more. I’m actually kind of excited for the Fall route with 9 on Blue and 9 on Red. I don’t play Red because it’s only a 9 hole option but it has some great looking holes.

The red nine is pretty tough actually.  Probably going to play it in a few weeks when the rest of my group is out of town.  Been wanting to dust off the walking cart for a quick 9.   Range balls used to be included with a membership so I used to hit balls before teeing off but they continually take things away and charge more.

Last day of Teacher Appreciation Week meant we went to a skating rink after work. I stuck around for a bit then got 18 holes in. I’m not gonna lie; I really wanted to play Silver Lake after reading about it so much lately. Alas, it was booked until 4:00. I ended up at Water’s Edge, which was surprisingly solid. The greens had been punched and top dressed but still had some decent pace to them and it’s nice finally playing with all the foliage in. Light breeze, sunny, mid 60’s. Perfecto. Ball striking? Not as good. I was a little wild with driver and made 7 bogies. However, I also had 3 birdies and two more that hit the inside of the jar and came out. 76.

Interesting morning at Arrowhead.  We started on the west 9 in perfect weather.   Course was ridiculously firm, greens were flying around a 12 to 13, but very playable.   Got through with a 37, and great pace of 1:40.  At the turn somebody turned the fan on and out of nowhere hurricane winds and the temp dropped hard.   With how firm the course was playing,  the south 9 became impossible to almost unplayable with the winds.   Couldn't hold any greens (or fairways for that matter) going down wind and once the ball was over the green you were done.   Hole 7 on the south (our 16th)  from 180 I hit my gap wedge,  landed 15 yards short of the green and ran out 40 yards over the green.  Then there was trying to put your ball on the green and not have the wind blow it down a slope.    With that, the back 9 came to a crawl and took us 2:30 to play.   Put up a solid 43 on the back,  be willing to bet 80% of the golfers there were north of 100.   As much as I'm sick of wet conditions,  the course should have been softened up a bit in prep for the winds that were predicted.

Trekked to Crystal Woods early this morning as I was going to work some kinks out of a driver that got funky at the end of yesterday's tournament round. More on that tomorrow.

Got there 90 minutes ahead of the tee time. Checking in, the pro shop guy says, "We're no longer allowing anyone to hit driver on the range." Said, OK, we'll just set the 3W up and go with that. "Um, no 3W's, either, the longest club you can hit is a hybrid. The thought crossed my mind that some people hit a 300 yard drive, others, 225, some people hit a hybrid 250, is there any mathematical logic to this, um no.  Obviously it's easier to just block club selections.

Course is fine, playing fast, greens firm, quick, bunkers have sand. 3:50 on a Saturday morning, nice.

So, my long time golf bud asks at check in, "how come you can't book a tee time as a single?" The response was "The owner doesn't want singles on the course." BTW, we used to pay $42-$49 to walk CW, today with a cart, it was $71.

Played decent, figured out the driver on the course, decent short game, blah, blah, blah, blah.

After the round, having a beer and the owner and his wife come in and they were the group behind us who finished 30 minutes later. This is where it gets interesting.

Some guys come in at the turn, get a dog and beer and one asks "How late is the bar open?" The bartender says, "We close at 5."  Had to ask her what was up with that. She said, the owner doesn't want "random" people just coming in for food/drinks. I asked if they had leagues during the week day and she said yes. Asked how long do they stay open for leagues that start at 4-5 after work.  She said, "I'm usually here until 11:30-12:00 depending on how late the guys are here." This is logical, right?

As someone who owned restaurants, the bar makes up 80% of the profits while food is 20%, if you're lucky. Why would you want to shut off the cash cow, and to the forum constituency, how many of you go to a golf course bar to hang out and not have golfed?

My golf bud asked the owners about Sunday's tee sheet which had a ton of openings for 2, 3 and 4 somes, but wouldn't accept a single. They literally said, "We're not focused on singles." Guess who lives 5 minutes away and won't be playing there any longer?

So, it they just allowed 5 singles a day at $71 each, that's $497/week, times 4.35 weeks in a month times 7 months equals $11K, not to mention range balls, possible beverages/food.  As a retired business owner, I wanted to make money and draw people to the biz, yet these "interesting" people have zero interest.

Yeah, I noticed last month that Crystal Woods was no longer taking singles tee times this season. They did the past three seasons. Oh well. I'll spend my money elsewhere.

Spring Valley this morning with Bear. They’re putting some money into the course. Doing lots of tree removal, especially around the 4th green. We played early enough that there was no wind issues. Light breeze up top but nothing too impactful. It was very firm and those tiny roller coaster greens drove me nuts like always. No birdies for a 76. Not my best effort. I suppose for a 4 AM wake up I should play a better course. I blame my playing partner, who was desperate to get in a round there. Ever thrown a bear under a bus? Oh, as usual there were three guys inside drinking beer and gambling at 8:30 AM. The Wisconsin way.

Played Stonehenge next. The wind started in the parking lot and didn’t let up. Just brutal trying to get anything to stop. I’ve played four rounds there and the wind has blown four different directions. Whipping like crazy every time. I pieced together a 40 on the front and shot a 37 on the back with a birdie on 17. It felt like I played much better than my score indicated. I didn’t think I’d be begging for heavy humidity, dead air, and gnats. But there we are.

Arrowhead has fairways that rival some greens. That place can get rock hard!

Some courses don’t let you book as a single alone which I understand, but not being able to add a single to another group is ridiculous.

Klein Creek yesterday. Course was in the best overall shape I’d seen. Every pin was in the toughest spot possible which I don’t understand. Is that a thing now for courses because it’s the second time I’ve experienced this in my 5 rounds this year and others have mentioned this phenomena also. Are players complaining that courses are too easy?

$89 on Saturday before 2 PM seems a little high for a course with no driving range and no GPS in the carts, but everyone seems to be really jacking their rates. I guess that’s why the course was wide open on a Saturday afternoon in May.

Shot par on the front, but nine straight 5s on the back. Weird round for me because I think the front is harder than the back.

Klein Creek is actually a nice layout. Glad to hear the new owners are actually putting some effort and money into the course. The first time I ever played KC was April 19, 1995. Not the memory of an elephant, but that was the day of the Oklahoma City bombing. Was sitting at the bar, before the current remodel, watching the sadness. Sad day for America.

Have seen crazy things at KC over the years and been part of one. On 9, watched a "gentleman" forget to set the brake and his cart went into the pond. He waded in to fetch his bag, went and grabbed another cart and kept going without saying anything.

Played in a tournament there and hit my first 3 tee shots OB left on my way to an 11. Something crazy happened on the walk to 2 and ended up shooting 78, won multiple skins, 3 par 3's and finished in third. In that round, on the 6th hole, was on the green in reg and made birdie, without a putter. That green has a kidney shape, and I had a bit of rough between my ball and the hole. Opened up a 60 degree wedge on the green, voila. No putts. Easy game.

Lol. Bah. KC was one of the first housing development layouts I ever played. You had your choice of slicing a teeshot into the ponds, or pulling one OB into a backyard.

It's amazing how Chicagoland managed to avoid the housing development course craze for the most part. Probably because the area was pretty much built out by the 70s.

1st Saturday Classic for the season at Village Links yesterday. Frustrating day. Tee to green, course all was in superb condition. Bunkers were horrid. Must be a good 12" of sand at the base and all slopes of every bunker. Could not even get a good footing. 3 fried eggs including a fairway bunker. Other than that, hit a nice drive on the last from the whites to 20 yards short of the green so I guess that'll bring me back next week.

The stars aligned and I had an open Saturday morning to play a quick 18 before softball. Somehow a 6:20 permanent time at The Preserve was vacated so we snuck in. Beautiful morning, course was in great shape, greens ran very quick and true. Moved up to the whites to accommodate 2 in our group, so it played really short. Still happy to break 80 despite touching a club since November.

Got off the course around 10:15. In the car I could see the wind pick up and a bunch of dust clouds. Got out of the car at softball and was freezing, temp dropped 10-15 degrees quickly. Glad we finished when we did.

It was brutal.  Arrowhead isn't that difficult of a golf course, and that was probably the hardest 9 holes of golf I've played in a while. Just a perfect storm of weather and a rock hard golf course with some tougher pin placements.  On the front 9 I only missed one green in regulation, on the back after the winds my ball touched every green in regulation but only stayed on 3 of the 9.   Downwind you couldn't hold anything, going into it you had the longer holes so trying to hold those greens with 5 and 6 irons wasn't doable.    I hit 1 because the winds weren't too bad yet, I was up by the 2nd green in two shots after a driver/5 iron so my chip stayed on, and then hole 4 was a shorter iron into the wind so it was easy to get the ball up and hold.

Nice to play in great weather which happened in both tournaments at Silver Lake on Fri/Sun. Compared to the beginning of the year, the course has changed so much. They're letting the rough grow out and it's around 3 inches now and the ball can sink to the bottom. Had a couple of drives yesterday where you couldn't see the ball unless you were right over the top of it.  The greens are excellent, fast, as they can put pins in some inaccessible places, which seems to be the case always on Sunday.

Much larger fields now as Friday had 136 players. If you're not shooting 7 shots under your index, you're chance of winning the overall or even your flight, is very low. Shot 1 over my index on Friday, finished 44th overall. My previous record low score of the year was beat Friday as someone shot 9 under their index. Didn't do much better in the team competition as my 6 HDCP partner's score was only used on 6 holes and didn't have his best day.

After Saturday's round at Crystal Woods, I thought the driver was figured out and a good Sunday morning warmup had me feeling positive as well. Took 5 holes to hit a fairway, although the misses weren't terrible, the angles were all wrong. 2 three putts led to an ugly front, but then things came around on the back. Finished 23rd overall in a field of just over 80. It's interesting, I've played in 14 events, cashed in more than half but only in the Sunday rounds. Seeing they alternate courses, it's been on each of the courses, but not sure of why I suck more on Friday.

3 comp rounds this week, plus a retiree round Wednesday at Blackstone. The usual Friday/Sunday and our long standing group is having a home game at Broken Arrow on Saturday. Met one of the rangers from BA and he shared that they're planning on opening the bar this year, but it'll only be open Fr, Sat and Sun. They're not planning on opening the restaurant for the foreseeable future.

7 to 9 under their index in a competition? Sandbaggers.

Respectfully, disagree. With events having up to 156 players, it can happen as I did it myself a couple of weeks ago. The USGA considers it an exceptional score and differentials are adjusted down by 1-2 shots in addition to the low round.  According to the USGA, the odds of someone shooting 5 under their index is 200-1 so with 156 players, it's not that unlikely to happen weekly with that large of a field.

Haven't seen anyone do it twice so far this year.

Has anyone played Calumet recently and if so, how were the conditions? Thanks!

Big difference between 5 under and 7 to 9.

Odds of a 6-12 HC shooting 7 better is 1200:1. 9 better is 27877:1.

In the Players this year, Justin Thomas shot a 78 in the first round and a 62 in the second round. That happens every week on the PGA Tour. Exceptional scores, good and bad, happen every day.

You're also cherry picking a specific handicap range.  And not taking into consideration, as happened with me, that my index for SLMC was established in April, 35 degree temps, 40MPH winds, zero roll, etc. I even suggested to the handicap committee to push the handicap establishment period back to more normal conditions or to reduce my index to my CDGA index and they declined.  Did I benefit? Hell yes. Did I follow the rules, absolutely.

Agree. 7-9 under your handicap should never happen. Maybe for super high handicappers that are learning and getting better quickly.. If this is happening weekly (which it sounds like it does to win this comp), then it is either sandbagging or a terrible handicap structure.
