I checked today.. No score posted on his GHIN account. It isn't worth causing a raucous at the club, part of me wants to say something to our pro though. Also don't want to be that guy. I rarely play in this kind of junk any way.  I know he plays in the money games occasionally. I'd be pissed off if I played in those and knew he didn't post his "best round ever."

You could always naively ask the pro if the match play rounds are to be posted for handicap purposes and if he says yes, mention Mr. Career Round.

I'm too competitive to let something like that fly.  At minimum you're helping out the next guy he goes up against.

Going to be in New Buffalo for 3 nights in early June. Unfortunately no luck with getting on to Dunes Club or Lost Dunes so I'm trying to pick between Harbor Shores or making the longer drive up to American Dunes or Ravines. Any thoughts / preferences between the 3? I've already played Warren and Blackthorn in South Bend but other than those two I'm definitely open to other suggestions.

Tough call. American Dunes and Harbor Shores are both excellent Nicklaus designs. I'd lean towards American Dunes.

Hawkshead is a fun round. Always in good shape. If you go to Saugatuck, Clearbrook is funny because it’s owned by Kirk Cousins. No idea if the course is good or not. But how many courses in the area are owned by NFL QBs?

F that. There’s no reason a match play shouldn’t have been posted to handicap. At the minimum, the pro should have posted it under a competitive round. I’d bring it up to the pro and ask, because this guy knows what he is doing. It’s only fair to everyone else he will have to play.

if you only played 12 holes and didn’t continue on after that, I would guess it would get posted as a 9 hole score. And if he was +1 thru 10… his handicap is about to drop faster than stocks on black Monday.

Posting a match play round is always a slippery slope, especially if it’s a two man better ball.

If you pick up because you’re out of a hole, you’re supposed to guesstimate how many strokes it would’ve taken you to hole out.

And for holes not played at the end…you write down the score your hcp dictates what you should’ve scored had you played them.

Normally I agree, but generally when you're dominating in matchplay, you're dropping putts and not having much conceded, or concessions are inches and not feet.    If I go down early,  that guy is putting everything.

Ex- You could be way down, then stick it to a couple of feet on a hole, other guy misses the green, then “happens” to blade/fat the next shot…couple of more putts, nice double on the card.

LD and I played Aldeen and Prairieview today.

A word on PV. Like others here, I'm a big fan of PV, so this hurts a bit to share. The maintenance has definitely taken a significant step back, imo. This especially true if you played PV pre-2021.

Prior to today, our last trip out to PV was Labor Day weekend. After the round, I shared my surprise on the conditioning and just how tired the course looked. Beat to hell tee boxes, patchness on the fairways, very bumpy greens, etc. I chalked it up to late summer fatigue.

Well, after today's round, not sure I can say that anymore. The course was in worse shape today than our round last August. In particular, the greens were very bumpy. Still fast, but all over the place. Putts would not hold their line.

Don't get me wrong, the course is still a great value and the layout is very good. But if you fondly remember the conditioning from a few years ago, you might be disappointed if you make the trip out to Byron.

Now I finally understand what DP4 feels when he plays Oak Grove, lol.

Twilight round at Heritage Bluffs.  Finally some nice weather!  Course unfortunately  is dismal condition,  fairways and tee boxes unkempt (i didn't think bent grass could get that long), bunkers with nothing but rocks,  rough that hasn't been mowed in weeks,  and slow bumpy greens.   What the heck happened?  I come to find out they hired the GM from Fresh Meadows.  I guess it all makes sense now.   $27 to walk and i felt like I over paid.  At least pace was just under 4 hours.

My game today matches the conditions.   This was really the first round all year I wasn't hitting knock down shots all day,  and that alone was trouble as I ended up flying a few greens as a result.   Missing a green was death between the bunkers and the US Open rough.   Putting was impossible,  you could hit 5 putts from the same spot and end up with  5 very different results.    79.  We'll be taking this one out of the rotation.

Arrowhead on Monday,  Prairie Landing on Friday,  and Harborside next Saturday.   Despite the awful spring,  I somehow will be going into June with 24 rounds under my belt.

Aldeen and Prairie View yesterday as Bear noted. Whoever set up Aldeen was in a bad mood. All the cups were cut on the backside of slopes tucked in corners. The front nine is kind of b!tchy anyway with the Mickey Mouse 5’s. I felt good about my 40, which…this season has been rough on me. Shot 37 on the back though. Was hitting it well in preparation for PV.

Let’s have an honest conversation about PV. Not an “I drove to hell and gone and now need to justify it with a rainbows and sunshine review.” The tee boxes would fit in at Jackson Park. Weeds and bare spots galore. The “divots” are craters. Visible drainage tiles, bumpy greens, hard pan spots that get plenty of sun exposure. They set the course up the same as when it got less than half the rounds it currently gets. Also, Bear pointed out it looks like they dumped a ton of money into the range (TopTracer, a zillion targets, etc.) but it’s come at the expense of course maintenance. I guess if the quality of the range is what matters to you…Last, we played behind a glorified 8some. Two foursomes playing a scramble where they’d wait for each other at tee boxes, occasionally change up the groupings, and blast bro country and Christian rock. Oh, and a barbershop quartet in what was, hands down, the biggest upset of the golf season. The golf was also terrible. The Hawaiian shirts and irons from the early 90’s were a giveaway they would be awful. Firing balls into groups on other greens via comically bad tee shots was the norm. This is easily fixable with a ranger and given the whole, “it’s a holiday weekend with a packed tee sheet” thing, that seems like a given. Alas, no ranger, though the starter pulled double duty for one or two holes.

The pro: PV now has a bunch of combo tees. A Black/Blue from about 6900 and a Blue/White from about 6300. I played the Black/Blue. Good distance for me in 65° temps. I hit the ball very well. Shot 38-36 74 with a birdie on 16.

Wrapped up Memorial Day weekend rounds at Delbrook. It’s in solid shape, greens are smooth and rolling at 9, plenty of sand in the bunkers, and it’s very lush throughout. I played like absolute butt on the front 9 (Middle). Can’t hit one fairway on a fairly narrow parkland course and expect to score well. I hit it much better on the South nine. Shot one under on the back and hit 7 greens. 76.

What a mess of a day for our group at Arrowhead this morning.    Wasn't the weather,  it warmed up nicely after a few holes.   Wasn't the course,  it was in great shape,  and greens were slower and more receptive than last time.   Wasn't the pace,  we got through in 3:20.  In fact we were probably holding the group behind us up a bit at the end.

The mess was for the first time ever nobody in our group was under 80.  This group consisted of two + caps, and two right around 1.    Nobody had a darn thing and it was comical.   Scores ended up slightly padded due to everybody trying dumb things the last few holes with none of them working out.   Fun day and all you can do is laugh.   Solid 83 on the books for me,  and I wasn't the highest.

Nice round at Mount Prospect last Saturday. Finally, a round that wasn’t played in a 15+ MPH wind. Lots of young people out, but their etiquette could improve. My group almost got hit multiple times and no fores were yelled. One younger guy in my group just started playing due to the impact of the YouTubers, “Good Good.” He brought his girlfriend along who sat in the cart for all 4.5 hours, but she said she isn’t interested in playing. The course was in great shape, but the pin positions were in impossible positions on nearly every hole.

Oak Grove today. Strap in, you know where this is going.

Oak Grove has new range balls and put in 4-5 barber poles so you have a target to warm up with. WOO HOO!!! Yeah. BTW, those are the last 2 good things of this round.

Went to the practice green to hit chips, pitches, putts. What the literal hell? Ever hit toward a chipping target at 30 feet, have the ball land at 10 feet and end up at 12 feet? Oak Grove today. Pitches were stopping within a foot of where they landed and I'm guessing the practice green, which still has diseased areas from last year, was rolling around a 3. Coming off Randall Oaks, this was crazy.

Oh wait, I forgot 1 other good thing. Oak Grove had a starter! He is a new Golf Visions employee that we had plenty of time to engage with as the foursome in front of us hit 13 balls off the first tee. Bob, AS we got to know him on most tee boxes, had a really rough day.

Here are somethings the starter/assistant manager of Oak Grove shared with us.

1. Golf Visions is committed to investing in OG and returning it to the original condition. Here's a SPOILER, they haven't.

2. Golf Visions put new sand in every bunker, BUT they admit the sand is more rocks than sand. SPOILER, there is no sand, still packed dirt and rocks. Now, it's very easy to control the ball.

3. The greens aren't slow like the practice green. SPOILER, they are, and are in the worse condition I've seen in 20+ years of playing at OG. My guess is like the practice green, they were rolling 3. On the positive side of that, I hit every putt hard, directly at the hole, left the pins in and made several birdies by banking the ball off the pin. Not sure that's golf, but eh.

4. After the round, said new employee shared that the maintenance workers didn't show up today and none of the green had been cut/rolled in 3 days. SPOILER, we figured that out on the first green.

5. The fairways are divot mania. Would guess our group was in a combined 25 divots, if not more. Post round, I asked the new employee, who appeared genuinely interested in feedback, why they don't just put a divot mix on the cart to which he said, "that costs money." I suggested to him that they could have a much larger maintenance force if they had everyone who played fill their own divots.

6. In addition to the divots, some of the fairways are just bare in multiple spots.

7. There were at least 5 greens that were 20% disease and it just doesn't look like they're doing anything to address that. While they tried to address that with pin positions, it didn't work.

8. The new employee said pace of play would be, "No more than 4:30. We had 250 players yesterday and none finished in more than 4:30." SPOILER, we finished in 4:55. From the second fairway through 18, we waited on every shot. Now, a big part of that was "Bob" who hit 2 and sometimes 3 shots off the tee. Bob did not have a good day.

9. Was this the last trip to OG this year, most likely unless Jimmy shares multiple times that none of these are an issue.

10. See you Oak Grove in 2026.

DP4, I played Oak Grove two weeks ago. The greens were running OK, since the maintenance guys were actually working. They even got the dew off the back 9, lol.

That said, everything else condition wise you stated mirrored my experience. Saw a lot of dead patches and was thinking what's this place going to look like come August?

A starter at Oak Grove... A new era has begun!!

I think they let her ride for free, but I’m not 100% sure. In addition to the female rider, we had a female golfer too. Mount Prospect has the most female players of any course in Chicago that I’ve seen.

The issues with Oak Grove lie in the management, sure. But also in the design of the course. That’s a layout that requires a TON of tlc. There are a zillion bunkers, foliage that hangs over galore, large greens, etc. A maintenance budget comp is probably Thunderhawk given footprint, layout, and bunkering. That’s a design that requires either municipal funding or a steady stream of income via memberships. Oak Grove gets neither. So, yes, GolfVisions sucks. No disagreement. But this was always Oak Grove’s destiny.

Honestly, I don't know why you guys continue to trek to that goat track Oak Grove, especially with our favorite management company running the clown show. I can think of two dozen courses I'd rather play.

I'm limiting myself to playing it only on weekday mornings. It does have some advantages at that time.

It's only $37 to walk, so I can look past the plethora of maintenance issues. Plus, I know what to expect.

Also, it's super easy to get one of first times there. Pretty much guarantees me a sub 3 hour round and I'll trade conditioning to some extent for pace.

Finally, since the maintenance is minimal, OG doesn't have a huge crew to content with when dew sweeping. The setting is still nice and you can enjoy that since the machine noise is limited.

It's a once or twice a year round, at the most. Absent 11, a fan of the layout and have a tendency to post more birdies there than most other rounds. Can't explain that at all. With Bear on being an early tee time = a fast round, which is what we normally do.

I played Oak Grove just twice before it earned a permanent spot on my S-list. The last time was at a CDGA tournament in September 2009. It was in the upper 80's, and they had no drinking water on the course. We were dying out there. I complained after the round, and the Golf Visions clowns said that they didn't have water on the course because people could sneak on to the course and poison the water in the jugs. Oy veh. Ever heard of a padlock? What made the excuse even stupider was that the company was managing Ravisloe at the time, and lo and behold, Ravisloe had jugs of drinking water on the course.

Honestly, I don't know why you guys continue to trek to that goat track Oak Grove, especially with our favorite management company running the clown show. I can think of two dozen courses I'd rather play.

Arg, you’re dealing with Oak Grove capital M Marks on this thread. Logical arguments like “the course sucks,” “it’s a dog track,” and “playing from the bunkers is harmful to clubs” fall on deaf ears. My issue is not with the course. I know what it is (junk). It’s that it takes forever to get there only to play a course that stinks.

LD, not sure how long you've been making the trek, but when OG first opened 20+ years ago, the greens were second in IL only to Medinah #3. They were THAT good. Perfect sand in the bunkers, the course was nothing short of amazing. I made the drive 7-8 times a year to play an amazing course, excepting #11. At that point, the trees on 11 were much further in on the right, and especially on the left making the hole just untenable. It's just sad to see what it's become, knowing what it was, and could be.

Good question. I’ve definitely been making the drive to Harvard since before I got married. But time kind of gets fuzzy on stuff like this. I wanna say I first played there in about 2014. Need to do some research. A recap is buried somewhere in the Where Are You Playing Round 2 thread. I’ve always loved the layout and there aren’t many changes I’d make to it (11 should be a risk/reward short 4 with a green near the bridge, convert some of the hopelessly lost fairway bunkers to waste areas like Whisper Creek did, dump sand into those super deep green side bunkers that become ponds after a light shower, probably need to completely re-do the greens given the reported level of disease). But I remember playing it for the first time and thinking, “There’s so much potential but it’s gotta be SUCH a maintenance hog.” This was before learning just how bad a fit GolfVisions is for a place like Oak Grove.

Need a rec for a golf course on the way to Milwaukee.  12 person golf trip, everyone flies in next Thursday to O'hare and we are staying overnight in Milwaukee.   Need a course to play.  Tried Brown Deer and they have an outing all day.

Need somewhere that is easy access to the highway.  Was thinking the usual suspects of Thunderhawk and Shepherd's Crook.     I think Stonewall is a little out of the way because after O'Hare the tour bus has to go to my house in Deerfield and pick up 3 of us.

Any suggestions for courses I'm not thinking of, maybe something in southern Wisconsin.  We are already playing Wash County on the Sunday.
