Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

Traditions at Chevy Chase.

Playing there tomorrow, not particularly awesome. I last played it in '06, so I have faint recollections of the course.

$25 for Settler’s Hill is a good deal even though they have no range, a stupidly sloped practice putting green, no lightning detection system, and no expandable golf bag covers on the cart if it rains. Love the layout and the different kinds of holes at Settler’s. Pins were put in very challenging locations on slopes and the greens were faster than I can ever remember. I shot worse there than at TPC Deere Run. Great day of golf on Wednesday with my dad and uncle all things considered.

There was a plan developed to put a range in at SH a couple of years ago. Think it was approved by the Park District and I know they just bought 1,500 acres in Kane County. Any mention out there of them doing that?

lol Sorry. I am new to the chicago golf scene and golf wrx. Thought we were just posting where we were playing the next day based off the thread title. Wanted to get involved to get some tips regarding chicago area golf scene since this opportunity to play Medinah probably wont ever happen again. Also it was insane, stands still up, rough was thickest ive ever seen. What a track though.

> Just finished 18 at Kankakee Elks... It was "unique". First impression: I booked my tee time this morning, not a single booked tee time on the tee sheet online so I thought I'd be the only one there. Get there and the place was packed. I go in and the old man asks how he can help. I tell him I have a 430, his reply was not tonight you don't. I said excuse me? He then tells me they have leagues and college practice and they have no openings all evening. I show him my confirmation and tell him I just drove an hour 15 minutes we need to figure something out. End up going off the back and practicing with the college lol. The back 9 was average at best the front had some character. Greens were good, everything else was pretty bad. The front 9 was pretty fun. Overall not worth the drive to play it, even at 20 bucks. Also, he guaranteed me I wouldn't finish, walked off 18 and said " I thought I wouldn't finish?" Walked the back (front) 9 in about 50 minutes with some jogging. Shot even through that 9.

My entire experience was eerily similar. Same old guy there. Walked on seeing an open tee sheet. I found the front appealing (2nd nine for me same as mci experience) and the back pedestrian at best. The greens were legit. Could definitely plop those greens at a $100 course around here and they'd hold up. A nice quaint course that needs a renovation, but is worth playing once IMO.

Played twice this week at old and tree courses. Monday was Old Elm - awesome Ross design and very nice experience. Wednesday was Old Orchard for a “work” Shamble outing. Pretty short holes and the tight layout leads to keeping your head on a swivel. Finished at minus 16 and won some cash. Still had some daylight so 4 of us went across the street to Rolling Green which is always in great shape. Leaving Sunday for a week in Carlsbad for more training and golf

Welcome to Chicago! I assume the round at Medinah was well worth the traffic h-e-l-l. I played Torrey Pines South last year the week after the Farmers, and many of the stands were still up, and the rough was super thick.

We sure don't get too many days like this in August. Simply perfect. Chevy Chase was in very nice shape. There were a handful of spots in the fairways that were roped off as GUR, but otherwise it was fine. The greens were surprisingly speedy. The fastest I've played on in some time. The bunker sand was fluffy. Pace was 4:15, which is slower than I'd expect at 7 am, but not horrible.

So so round ballstriking with 9 fairways and 10 greens. I had a good front 9 at 1 over with one birdie, but my nasty hook reared its ugly head late in the round and I finished five over for the day. Can't let that spoil a gorgeous day though. There's always tomorrow.

played that course a couple times per week when we lived down the street - weekday rounds there were great. if you avoided league times, the place could be gone thru fast and easy. nice layout and the upkeep was done well. straight holes, doglegs, variety. the resident discount was a good value.

today we played an early nine and will be at Sportsmans's for eighteen tomorrow.

it was just super to walk this morning.

Played the Preserve at Oak Meadows yesterday in a 4 group work outing. Picture perfect day for golf and the course was in great shape; greens were on the slower side but rolled fine and the group really enjoyed the course. On the service side, except for one ranger who was very nice and engaging, the rest of the staff were a bunch of d!cks. One ranger had a scowl on his face the whole time (despite it being perhaps the nicest day all year, weather wise), as well as the pro + attendant in the cart corral greeting us with “We need these carts for the afternoon rounds so take your bags off and clear your carts.” You’d think for the rate they charge the guys could at least make an effort to be friendly and accommodating (I get they needed to turn the carts around but there is a better way of doing that).

After initially not looking like I was going to be able to play today, things opened up last minute. Alas, it was way, way too nice out and pretty much every course was booked up until 3:00. I say “pretty much” because Villa Olivia had plenty of openings on their tee sheet. What. A. Dump. Just brutal. Some greens were sponges, some were like parking lots. Some tee boxes were cut, others weren’t. There was also a weird scramble going on where people would just hit ground balls or whiff a few times from the same spot, repeat the process, then pick up and go to the next hole to repeat the process. They then posed for a group picture on the 18th green while I was standing over a shot in the middle of the fairway. Considerate bunch. 77.

Another beautiful day. Am I dreaming? Spent the morning flailing away at Wilmette. The course was in so-so shape. The fairways were cut/slit crosswise, and the grass was allowed to grow out. 'Definitely some weird lies. The greens were excellent, rolling smoothly with good speed. The early morning pace was excellent, finishing the round in 3:45.

'Very poor day ballstriking with only 6 fairways and 9 greens. Blech. If I hit a good drive, I'd follow it up with a poor iron/wedge. I did manage two birdies, but it couldn't offset the damage done elsewhere. Oh well. It was a great day to be out.

What a beautiful day for golf! Played my bi-weekly “tournament” in the morning, this time at Harborside Starboard. The $109 is generally way more than I like to spend on a round of gold, but it is what is it. The course is in fine shape. The fairways were little overwatered, but not too bad. Greens were quick and true, plenty of sand in bunkers (I “purposely” visited few of them, just to make sure). While the tee game was serviceable, the short game and putter were brutal. I swear, this is one of the very few courses where I have no idea about breaks and up/downhill putts, no matter how much time I spend reading them. May you Rest In Peace Mr. Nugent...

The greens at Harborside are not crazy, but I swear they have some subtle breaks that leave you scratching your head at times.

With the exception of a couple of heavy storm days, August has been awesome. In fact, other than the stretch early in the summer when it rained every day for two weeks, it’s been a great summer weather-wise. I’m at the exact same number of rounds as I was at this point last year.

Played Bonnie Brook this evening. The course is in excellent shape, especially the greens. Even late in the day after a weekend of heavy play, they were still rolling smooth with nice pace. I've played here a ton over the years and I've never seen the course in as good of shape.

A twilight round at Willow Crest. Awesome be weather and a 3 1/2 hour round, couldn't ask for much better. Game is finally back to serviceable. Only 4 fairways, but like my last round, the misses we're just barely off the fairway and everything was playable except my tee shot on 12. 11 greens, 4 birdies, 4 bogies and a double on the day. Feeling good about the game at this point given where it was a month ago.
