Where are you playing tomorrow - Chicago (Round 3)

Alot of this is personal preference, and golf is a bit of a microcosm of life.  I just appreciate everyone being different.  In my dream world, every golfer I get paired up would be like me...they walk instead of ride, are a 6 handicap, likes to drinks beers, does not play any music and takes a 3:30 pace.  But what a strange world to expect everyone else to be like me.  Instead, if someone shoots 115, I think that is cool that they are making the effort to play, if they play music, I don't like it but they paid the same greens fee, if they don't drink, whatever floats your boat and if you play in 4:15 minutes, totally get it. None of this is going to bother me one-iota.   More than anything, I love the game of golf and I want courses to stay open.  We are losing courses in this area every year and it's just unrealistic to expect everyone showing up at Schaumburg Golf Club today is a semi-pro retired from the Korn Ferry Tour (that's my joke of the day).  Such great memories of meeting random people at a golf course that you end up enjoying a round with, and I hope to make many more going forward.

I don’t blame you for wanting all that. I want responsible drinking, no littering, more respect, more courtesy, and more respect in all aspects of life, including golf.

It isn’t going to happen and you guys are in the 1% (or less) of people that think it should or care.  We get annoyed by slow play and multiple tee shots also.

I’m a high handicapper that keeps a decent pace, plays a tee box too far back usually, drinks some beers, listens to quiet music, and is inconsistent at repairing my ball marks on the rare occasion I make one. You’ll have to wait while I chunk some shots.

If that means you wouldn’t enjoy a round with me, fine.  I have fun on the course and am as respectful as possible.

Plenty of people here that like to talk down to the 99% of the golfing population, brag about their water consumption and lost ball #, and just overall be miserable regarding anything but a low score for you to play with here.

... I think maybe you are either reading between the lines or you might be taking things out of context. I really wish people didn't drink and drive, stare at their cell phones when the light is green and traffic moving all around them while I sit there waiting for them to take off like a nitro funny car to catch up, am very careful here in Phoenix to make sure nobody is running a red light and will T Bone me with a green light (happens a lot here sadly) but I could go on and on. I realize most of it isn't gonna happen but I don't think that makes me a pretentious driver.

... "I’m a high handicapper that keeps a decent pace, plays a tee box too far back usually, drinks some beers, listens to quiet music, and is inconsistent at repairing my ball marks on the rare occasion I make one. You’ll have to wait while I chunk some shots." Other than not fixing your ball mark and maybe someone else's too 😉 which is just as easy for a 20 or +2 index I think all that sounds like someone I would enjoy being paired up with. The problem and what several here object to is the exact opposite of your description. "I’m a high handicapper that doesn't keep a decent pace, plays a tee box too far back usually and plays slow, drinks far too many beers, listens to very loud and music we don't like. You’ll have to wait while I chunk some shots after 4 methodical practice swings." I would add I have played with really good players that were unpleasant people, seemed angry far too often and bordered on being anti social.

... My normal winter group consisting of 4 snowbirds and 3 residents with handicaps of 20, 18, 15, 12, 8, 0 and a +1. We gravitated together because we share a love for the game, enjoy each others company and handicap doesn't enter into the equation. A certain rare pairing with the only wife in our group has us playing 4 different tees and there is no difference in the time it takes, being ready is just a natural rhythm for us and the same as all 4 playing from the same tee. From May-September I am paired up with strangers most days and they are every walk/ride of golfer. While it is extra fun and a real treat for me to be paired up with someone that plays at my level or better, playing with a pleasant personality that falls somewhere on the acceptable spectrum of common courtesy I will have a good day.

... Couldn't agree more. I played with 3 gentlemen from India in LA at Encino GC (similar to Schaumburg) and they played the tips, none breaking maybe 120 or even 130? All in the early 70's they played lquickly, kept pace, hit when ready regardless of position as long as someone wasn't in harms way but froze respectfully when I was hitting, replaced divots and raked their bunker shots. Some of the most pleasant people I have ever played with. I asked them on #10 why they didn't play forward tees and have a chance to break 100 and one said: "We are maximizing our dollar value Sam. You paid 2 times as much as we do to play today" I chuckled and said I am a senior too so we paid the same price and he replied "Not per shot. You pay twice as much per shot!" 🤣

... He let that sink in til we got to the next tee and said "Sam, we play once a week, are not veddy good golfers and we just want to hit as many shots as possible so we play the long tees. As long as we keep up we don't think it is a problem, do you?" I said of course not and when we finished playing I shot a 69 and one gave me a ball marker to remember them because "we have never seen a round in the 60's unless it was on TV". Lots of interesting conversations along the way from a different culture and it was one of the best days ever for me. As you said, such great memories of meeting random people at a golf course.

Another thing that's, become common this year.  I've seen easily a dozen of these just in the Chicago area.   The latest one is Stonewall.   If you're thinking the 1% is wrong on this new breed of golfers,  you're probably part of this problem.

As far as courses and money,  full tee sheets are great for revenue, but it adds to the maintenence output, especially with guys out there not taking care of the place.   Golfers are wear and tear on the course, and the guys we want gone are probably not drinking enough beer to make up for the time it'll take the maintenence staff to clean up their messes.

Must have been some heavy rains north of me last night. We heard a lot of loud thunder but didn't get too much rainfall.

Sunset Valley usually drains well, but they are downstream of some higher areas.  They couldn't open this morning.

Anywhere else have issues today?

Foxford has 9 holes closed.   Steeple is cart path only (which is a big deal there cause they never are).

I’m not saying yall are wrong. I’m saying this is how it is.

I wish everyone here was in the economic 1% so you all could join private clubs and shift your energy to something different (maybe kids being on their cell phones all the time nowadays).

... 🤣  now I think you are just trolling. No different than complaining about 3 straight days of rain Friday - Sunday or in my case 3 months without any rain. It changes nothing but sometimes it is nice to just let it out with others experiencing the same thing.

Can somebody fill me in on the obsession with beverage carts?  Twice in the last few posts, and I've seen numerous complaints about places not having them this year.

My complaint, which I wouldn't call an "obsession", is for the simple fact that the course was charging a premium holiday rate for a Wednesday tee time, yet wasn't staffed to support a premium rate with either a single ranger on the course to move the close to 5 hour pace along, or a beverage cart to make the wait more bearable.

As a former decade-long caddie, I love to schlep my bag around a course during twilight drinking nothing but water at a 2.5 hr pace.

*TRIGGER WARNING*

I also love drinking 3-unlimited # beers with my closest friends while we cruise around on carts.

*TRIGGER WARNING #2*

Many times I can be found wearing my hat backwards and my shirt untucked.  Hopefully this didn't make anyone around here spontaneously combust.

Got tired of watching golf on TV and decided to hit up everyone’s favorite “Big Fun”.  The twosome I joined told me to just go ahead on my own (since there weren’t too many people teeing off before 3pm), but I told them on biggie, since as a single I was going to cruise around in under 2 hours and I was definitely coming to a screeching halt sooner or later.  Course was in typical condition  - rough was actually cut, fairways so so, bunkers full of water (had to use rakes to try and find my ball on couple occasions), and the greens ran blistering 8-9 ish?  Despite hitting only few fairways, my misses were in good spots/just off the fairway.  Irons? Serviceable.  Putting?  Let’s not talk about it….  39-37, with 4 bogeys scattered around.  Oh -  I did manage to  consume 5 beers during the round (had to keep myself hydrated/busy waiting for my playing partners), but peed only once, so I had that going for me.

Busy next weekend - charity scramble at Old Oak on Friday and The Brute in Lake Geneva on Sunday.

Arrowhead this past Saturday. Course was in excellent condition but the superintendent must've been pissed with someone. With hot temps and high gusty winds, there were some real doozies. The 18 for the day was the South and then the Baby Nine (West). 1st on the south was cut maybe 8' front left. The 3rd was cut 10' from the left edge and 10' from the front. 5th 8' from the back left, and 9th 8' back middle. No exaggeration. Incredible! West had some wicked hole positions too. It wasn't enjoyable.

I've seen some really wild pin placements there the last couple of years.  Last year on hole 7 on west the pin was front right in the middle of the slope that's there.   I sort of get the feeling that some days they just send out the new guy out, who probably doesn't golf, to cut the pins.   I loved the ridiculousness of it, but not a great thing for a Saturday and pace of play.

It's weird to assume the financial status of anybody in either direction.  I could afford a club if I wanted to but the combo of paying thousands a month for something I can only use half the year, and wanting to retire at the age of 50 makes it a bad investment for me.   That shouldn't even be a factor in the conversation tho -  common sense should be an easy thing for everybody on a golf course.

-If you're going to drink, do it in moderation so your cart doesn't end up in a hazard (or worse you take a family out on your ride home)

-If you listen to music, do it at a reasonable level so the rest of the course isn't subjected to it

-Play the right tees, and if you're a high handicapper having a rough hole know when to pick up (or play a format like stableford that has a max score)

-Do what you need to do to get around in 4 hours

-take care of your messes on the course (divots, ball marks, garbage

Telling people they should go join a club shouldn't be the answer, it's so simple to do the basic things, but instead you get people who feel like they paid their money and they deserve the world and should be able to do what they want.

Bartlett Hills Saturday, 5+ hour round, just not fun.  The two groups in front of us were so incredibly slow and appeared to have stopped between 9's for 10-15 minutes.  Tough to get into any kind of rhythm  when it's that slow.  Apparently, the course was hit on Friday night with a microburst as there were several trees down and a couple of bunkers had water in them. Other than that, the course was in good condition.

... This seems to be one of the most controversial topics and one some seem to take offense to. I play with far too many that drink more than moderation and their personality and on course behavior changes by the back 9. Louder, less considerate and less fun to be around. Then add some in other groups drinking excessively can get aggressive and confrontational. Again just common sense. I imagine most serious golfers do drink responsibly and for most I problem wouldn't even know they are drinking.

... stasek to be fair I have no idea how 5 beers effects you over 4+ hours because as we all know, 5 beers can either get someone a little too drunk while others can drink 5 beers and seem to be exactly the same. How much you drink isn't the issue, it is how someone acts after drinking x number of drinks. Because really it is none of my business what you do as long as you are respectful of the course and others and are pleasant company.

I was never a big drinker, but I've stopped all together this year for health reasons.  I'm kind of in line with you, no issues with guys having a beer or two, but when you see guys coming out with bags of ice & beer that's a whole other situation.  At that point I feel like maybe you should just be hanging out at a bar, because clearly your purpose isn't to use the golf course for golf.   I probably come off as dickish in this thread, but honestly I do what I can to try to enjoy myself on the course while keeping in mind it's a public space, and I should be handling myself in a fashion that also allows others to enjoy their round (and for those that drink operating in a way that allows them to get home safely as well sine that part of the round now spills over into the outside world).   I always say that you do you, but make sure that doesn't impact those around you in a negative fashion.

This is taking a weird combative turn, so apologies if you feel slighted.

I would hardly call rangers and beverage cart employees random, as those are two employees I'd anticipate seeing out on a public course charging a $100+ rate.  Blackstone was upcharging Juneteenth because they could, not because they were offering weekend staffing on a Wednesday.  Having caddied/worked staff at an upscale north shore club for a decade this is something I don't have much tolerance for.

For comparisons sake I played Pine Meadow the next day.  I saw a ranger multiple times and we played at a 3:45 pace.  No beverage cart, no big deal as I was playing with an older crowd and paid a normal weekday rate.

If we're going to chastise people around here for complaining about 5 hour rounds and no rangers on the course, golfwrx is about to turn into quite the battleground.

Hoping to join you with the retire by 50 group! Then have 40 years of uninterrupted golf.

This is taking a weird combative turn, so apologies if you feel slighted.

Every course is upcharging because they can.  Tee sheets are full, there's minimal incentive to bring much more to the table than golf.  I'm all for a ranger, but most of the rangers don't do jack squat so why waste the money on that payroll?  I've already made my beverage cart opinions known.

Comparing an upscale north shore club to expectations of a public course is hilarious.
