Anyone ever played out at Apple Orchard in Bartlett? Looking for a couple of low key 9 hole or par 3 courses in the western suburbs to play as a change of pace.

River Bend in Lisle was always my favorite 9 hole course. It's no pushover. With plenty of wetlands it's a tough test. It does get backed up, but I bet now would be a good time to check it out.

I’ve played it a few times in the last few years, it’s okay, nothing special, but it makes for some good iron practice, tee shots range from 80 to 200 yards. One of the tee boxes is back by some woods and one time when playing on the evening, there were so many mosquitos and bugs flying around I couldn’t even tee off. But doubt that is a problem right now.

River Bend is definitely a fun, and challenging, niner. You’re right though, it can and will get very backed up so now is the perfect time to play.

Village Links of Glen Ellyn 9 is a solid 9 hole track. Nice variety of holes as well as some par 5s that 9 holers don't always have.

 

There's always Downers Grove Golf Club as well. It may not be exciting on the surface as it's an older layout design, but it was actually the first 18 hole course in America I believe, and a CB Macdonald design. https://thefriedegg.com/downers-grove-golf-club/

I was going to try and play at Bonnie Brook this afternoon.

i just called over there and they received just under 4.0 inches (!), and have 3 holes flooded on the back and one on the front, so they are closed today.

I'm a little bit south at 120 and the des plaines river and that on-line gauge measured 3.0 in the last 30 hours.

Thunderhawk was supposed to open today for their first day of operation.

It turned out to be a beautiful day, minus the wet conditions of course. To call Maple Meadows soggy would be a serious understatement. The fairways were soft and very wet. I had to move the ball a few times to get a reasonably dry lie. Rough was heavy and wet. Bunkers were washed out, and basically unplayable. The vast majority had large lakes in them. There was standing water in a few places, but not as much as I expected. Well. other than the 17th fairway. My playing partner hit a towering drive, his best of the day. We couldn't see the landing area. As we crested the rise we saw a huge lake in the middle of the fairway. Another ball lost. Greens were decent, rolling at 8 to 9. I was surprised to see so few ball marks. With the wet conditions I expected balls to leave marks on the greens, but there were very few ballmarks. That said, the a--hat that was rolling his cart across the greens should be beaten with a 9 iron.

Decent round. With the course playing long I didn't hit many greens, but did manage to scramble quite well. Highlight of the day was simply getting a fairway, GIR, and two putt par on the long par 4 15th.

GolfNow is a steaming pile of dog sh-t. I've tried to book a round for Monday and Tuesday, but then courses that use the GN engine are either showing no times at all, or hang with a 'Preparing Tee Time Details' message after selecting a tee time. Nearly a dozen courses attempted, and they're all screwed.

Anybody have any luck actually talking with a human being at a course? I tried calling several of the courses, and get put on hold by the automated system without anyone ever picking up.

I couldn't get a live human being at CHevy CHase last week (same thing you are talking about).

I've been able to reach the guys at Bonnie Brook, the pro Jamie Nieto at Oak Meadows.

I think I spoke to the people at Thunderhawk.

Drove past oak brook on the way home and the front nine was flooded as expected. But the water spread out all the way to the first fairway, I’ve never seen it that far before. Unreal

After 3 calls I finally got through at Mt Prospect. I think the problem with GolfNow is that the course can book rounds on their home system, and the updates don't get pushed back to GolfNow. GN shows an open tee time, but displays the an error with no real details if you attempt to book the time. As I said, dog sh-t.

I managed to grab a 9:45 am tee time on Monday at Mt Prospect. Hopefully the course will have dried out a bit by then.

Was there for the 9:45 today as the rain finally stopped. It was waterlogged but drainage was working well and it improved throughout. Even had mowers out. Played in about 3:20

Thanks. More heavy rain forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully the drainage continues to handle the additional intake.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I'm going to get out to Pottawatomie in addition to Blackstone this coming week. Just need the rain tomorrow to hold off a little bit so everything isn't a damn swamp.

Hilldale yesterday. Back nine was flooded so they would not let us play. It would be real nice if they call people with tee times booked to let you know! Foursomes everywhere including one fivesome. 4:10 minute round playing the front twice...not what one would expect with the current rules...

Last night Bear and I decided our round on Sunday looked like it could get washed out so at about 11:30 pm we went looking for courses with early morning openings. It came down to Carriage Greens and Green Garden because literally nothing else had openings. We went with Green Garden’s gold course and expected very little. However, it was a pleasant surprise. The course was wet, of course, and there was some standing water in a few spots, but the greens were surprisingly very good and when the dew came off they had some decent tempo to them. Nothing earth shatteringly fast but they were probably at a 9. After the junk we putted on at Bowes and Cinder, greens that ran smooth and true were great. The layout of the course was also pretty solid. The Blue 18 there is a standard flood plain parkland course but the Gold is a lot more modern with some interesting prairie-style holes. If we’re in a similar situation I’d go back. Golf Now also let us book individually, which is apparently an oddity. I hadn’t booked directly through the GN site in years but I guess the key is to book at midnight the night before. Anyway, I shot a 74 with one birdie. I had lots of other good looks for bird though.

Played Blackstone today. For as much rain as we got Thursday night to Friday morning, the course drained incredibly well. The bunkers will take some maintenance to get back to normal, but everything else was fairly dry.

I played with a friend who had double knee replacement a few years ago and he took a cart. I walked, but he took my clubs in the cart. I have never walked a course without carrying or had a caddie, but it was a great experience.

I've heard that IL courses will be allowing foursomes soon. Is that true?

I hope not. I'm liking the pace set with only twosomes. Being a 80% solo player getting stuck behind foursomes while walking can really be tough on the lower back.

If you want golf courses to survive, they can't have full tee sheets and only be 30% full. I definitely like the pace of play the last few weeks, but I'm willing to give that up for foursomes.

I selfishly agree, but Holy Moses is right. The courses need the revenue from foursomes. That said a good compromise would be at least 10 minute tee times.

Got out to Flossmoor today. Course was in pretty good shape with the water. The 3rd had to be made into a Par 3 but besides some standing water, pretty good. A new ownership group bought them out last year so they have a pretty good deal going, even better if it is your 2nd club.
